Four years ago, on the eve of the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, president of the country and chairman of the Central Military Commission, hung the "August 1st Medal" for Wang Gangpei, head of a detachment of the Xinjiang Armed Police Corps.
This is the highest honor of the armed forces, which is decided by the Central Military Commission and issued by the Chairman of the Central Military Commission.

Wang Gang, a name that frightens violent terrorists.
In the 30 years of enlistment, he has always been on the front line of the fight against terrorism. When he was a squadron commander, he successfully completed the capture and annihilation battle; when he was the captain of the brigade, he led the officers and men to complete the capture battle many times; when he was the deputy detachment leader, he successfully handled many violent terrorist incidents; when he was the commander of the detachment, he commanded the troops to win the encirclement and suppression battle in the plateau and mountains.
The encirclement and suppression that took place in the autumn of 2015 was arguably the most dangerous, arduous and complex battle Wang Gang had ever experienced—a gang of violent terrorists attacked a coal mine at night, brutally murdered several people, grabbed guns and fled into the vast snow-capped mountains.
In that mountainous area with a radius of thousands of square kilometers, Wang Gang led his troops day and night to search for clues about violent terrorists. Climbing cliffs, wading through glaciers, fending off strong winds, flying snow... Faced with an incomparably harsh environment, Wang Gang issued a military order: "If you do not eliminate this gang of violent terrorists, you will never collect troops!" ”
More than 40 days later, the remnants of the violent terrorists were finally found. They hid in a cave with a half-mountainside triangular slope, condescending, easy to defend and difficult to attack.
"Follow me!" At the critical moment, Wang Gang led 6 special combatants to creep towards the mouth of the cave and slowly approached. He stared closely ahead, grabbed the fighter, rolled decisively to the left, and threw tear gas and detonator bombs into the hole, and the violent terrorists were finally annihilated.
After 15 life-and-death battles, Wang Gangrong was awarded the 19th "Top Ten Loyal Defenders of the Chinese Armed Police" in the 19th Session. In 2017, Wang Gang was awarded the "August 1st Medal".
"At the award ceremony, President Xi personally hung medals for us one by one, and at that moment, my blood boiled." Wang Gang said that over the years, he treasured this medal around him, and he also treasured 8 words in his heart: "Go to the soup and fight the fire, charge the battle." This is also the "key word" in the order signed by President Xi to grant Wang Gang the "August 1st Medal".
A role model for stepping out of the lightbox
In the camp of Wang Gang's unit, a light box showing the deeds of the winners of the "August 1st Medal" was set up.
"Sometimes when we run into the captain of the detachment passing by the lightbox, we joke that he came out of it." Qian Guoxin, a soldier of the detachment, said that in fact, Wang Gang, who had removed his aura, was their example.
In 1991, the 18-year-old Wang Gang joined the army with the belief that "soldiers are born to fight for war", but the new recruits were assigned to the cooking class. Unconvinced, he seized every opportunity to practice his military skills.
"Every morning, I steamed the steamed buns, waited for them to be steamed for 20 minutes, and ran 5 kilometers, just right." Wang Gang said.
A year later, Wang Gang transferred from the cooking class to the combat class, participated in the detachment's military competition, and won the "all-round training pacesetter".
From an ordinary soldier to a special combatant, from a squadron leader and a brigade leader to a mobile detachment leader, Wang Gang has always demanded himself with high standards.
After becoming the commander of the detachment, in view of the fact that the detachment had been unsuccessful in striving for many years to create a first-level unit for military training in the armed police force, he set an example and shouted to the officers and men of the detachment: "If I fail any of the subjects, the officers and men of the whole detachment can be unqualified." ”
At that time, Wang Gang was over forty years old, and he still had old wounds on his wrist, and many people thought he was just talking. But soon, he appeared on the training ground, with standard movements and rain or shine. Driven by Wang Gang, the detachment was rated as a first-level military training unit by the armed police force that year.
Today, Wang Gang has new requirements for himself: "With the increase of age and the change of identity, I need to work harder on studying the new laws and characteristics of violent terrorist activities, and preparing for war, new ideas and new methods. ”
At the beginning of 2021, as a deputy to the National People's Congress, Wang Gang carefully sorted out the work of the past year before going to Beijing to attend the meeting, and on this basis, repeatedly thought about how to promote the wide application of cutting-edge technologies such as virtual reality, big data, and blockchain in the training field, and how to promote the transformation and upgrading of special combat training with the help of training systems such as smart ranges, wargame deduction, and human-machine confrontation...
Two unused tickets
Wang Gang's suitcase contained two unused tickets, both to Urumqi — both planning to return home, both cancelled due to work. Wang Gang said that he had "broken the contract" too many times for his family.
"A year Chinese New Year's Eve, I led my son to the army to make dumplings for him, and just walked to the door of the army when I saw a command car driving out. The son recognized his father in the car at a glance, waved to greet him, and he rolled down the window and said, 'I have a mission, you can come back'. Wang Gang's wife said.
After 30 years in the army, Wang Gang's vacation time added up to less than 100 days.
"Marry him and I'm ready to give." His wife gave Wang Gang great support, "He was born in Xinjiang and grew up in Xinjiang, and his job is to protect his hometown when he is small, and to maintain national security and stability when he is big." ”
In Wang Gang's home, there is very little furniture, and the clothes in the wardrobe are sorted and packed according to the season, so that they can carry their bags and leave. This is the habit that his wife and children have developed for many years to move with Wang Gang's post.
Although it is not common to meet, the son has a good relationship with Wang Gang. One day, the son mysteriously said to Wang Gang: "Father, today the teacher told us about your deeds, guess what? A classmate pointed to your picture and said it was his dad. I smiled secretly and didn't say a word. ”
