When you think of Shunde, what comes to mind? If you are a businessman, it is estimated that you will blurt out "Beautiful", "Country Garden" and other famous enterprises! If you are a foodie, you will definitely not hesitate to say "Shunde double skin milk", "Shunde fish raw" and other delicacies!
Admittedly, these keywords are indeed very big, but they are not enough to attract my attention. As a traveler who has always been obsessed with ancient garden architecture, the only reason why I went to Shunde was for a Lingnan classical garden.
The main entrance of Qinghui Garden
This famous garden in Lingnan, which has a history of hundreds of years, was once the residence of the Ming Dynasty, and in the Qing Dynasty, it became the long family residence of "one door and three soldiers", and also received Deng Xiaoping, Hu Yaobang, Li Zongren, Guo Moruo, He Xiangning and other state leaders after the founding of the People's Republic of China.
Such an experience is legendary enough for a garden in a corner of a small town in Lingnan. But it even has a set of national first-class protected cultural relics, which is talked about. Of course, it's much more exciting than that.

Walking on Qinghui Road in Daliang Town, Shunde, as if turning around from the prosperity of the city in front of you, you will encounter an ancient building complex with green bricks and gray tiles, and on the simple and elegant stone door, the three words "Qinghui Garden" mark all the garden.
The titles of the first of the four famous gardens in Lingnan and one of the top ten famous gardens in China have achieved the fame of Qinghui Garden. The story of its garden owners from the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, which has been infiltrated for hundreds of years, all begin with this stone gate.
In the thirty-fifth year of the Ming Dynasty (1607), Huang Shijun, a Native of Shunde, was a high-ranking official who served as a rebbe Shangshu, entered the cabinet, and even once served as a high-ranking official of the "Prime Minister Level". He was an upright official who was ostracized because of his frequent disagreements with courtier officials at the time.
Later, in order to support his father, who was nearly 100 years old, Huang Shijun resigned from his official post and returned to his hometown, and in the first year of the Apocalypse (1621), he successively built garden buildings such as Tianzhang Pavilion and Ling'a Pavilion. After the death of Huang Shijun, the Huang family gradually declined, and the garden was gradually abandoned.

During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, the descendants of the Huang family sold the garden to Shunde Jinshi Longyingshi. Long Yingshi's son, Hanlin Long Tinghuai, resigned his official post in the fifth year of Jiaqing (1800) and returned to his hometown to build a small square garden to serve his mother.
In the eleventh year of Jiaqing (1806), Long Tinghuai's son, Jinshi Longyuanren, further expanded the Xiaofang Garden, called "Qinghui Garden". The name of the garden is taken from the meaning of "whoever says anything to the grass will repay the three Chunhui", in order to show that the purpose of building the garden to worship the mother is to repay the grace of the parents such as Nikko and Hee.
The Long family is a major family in Shunde, and after the Qinghui Garden was repaired and expanded by several generations of the Long family's descendants, it gradually became a scale, and finally ushered in the most prosperous period.
The overall layout of Qinghui Park is divided into three parts, namely the southeast corner park entered by the main entrance of Baishi, the old park of Longjia in the middle, and the new park in the northwest.
The courtyards, water bodies, corridors and garden buildings inside these three parts of the scenic spot are relatively independent and penetrate each other, forming a unique pattern of "big garden and small garden", creating a quiet and wide garden with a garden in the garden.
At the same time, because of the relatively hot climate in Lingnan, Qinghui Garden adopts a spatial layout of dense front and back, low front and back high when building the garden, so that the whole garden is smoothly ventilated, has good lighting and strong practicality.

Coming in through the east gate, I saw a relatively open courtyard. The courtyard is full of flowers and trees, towering ancient trees, lush branches and leaves, pavilions like covers, sprinkling a cool place in the hot summer.
On the left, a row of antique buildings with green bricks and gray tiles, from front to back, are the Visitor Service Center, the Exhibition Hall of Keju Culture, the Exhibition Hall of Garden History, the Xuehai Book Building and the Exhibition Hall of Shunde Style.
To the right, through the left flower and the right bamboo pavilion, above the curved railing platform, is a large conference room built in 1959, named "Qimingju". On January 29, 1984, when Deng Xiaoping visited Zhashunde, he met with the leading group of the Shunde County PARTY Committee and the county government here.
Today, in front of Qiming stands a bronze statue of Deng Xiaoping, and next to the bronze statue is a statue of a black cat and a white cat, alluding to Deng Xiaoping's famous white cat and black cat theory. Qimingju has now been set up as an exhibition hall, displaying pictures and related materials of Deng Xiaoping in Shunde.

To the west from the Qiming Residence, there is the octagonal wall rift pool. The entire pool is uniquely designed and built, with walls made of stone blocks of different sizes. The stones are not bonded with stucco, which lasted more than 100 years, and are still as strong as ever, and do not leak.
The landscape of the Dragon Fish Fountain in the center of the pool reflects the typical Combination of Chinese and Western styles. The formal design of the fountain originates from the West, and the main structures of the fountain, the dragon, carp and orb, are all fired from ceramics, and have distinct characteristics of Foshan Shiwan pottery.
Next to the Dragon Fish Fountain, there is a garden treasure pavilion, two floors of hexagons, carved porches, glass windows, and beautiful people around the surrounding, simple and elegant. In the corner of the wall on the right, the iron begonias growing in the rock cracks of the artificial mountain are like thorny roses, green leaves and red flowers, full of vitality.

The southeast park and the central Longjiazhai district are separated by only a stone wall, and the green bamboo on the wall leaks windows, which not only separates the two continuously, but also borrows scenery from each other. The strange stones on the edge of the stone wall, or the scenery of the trees, or the combination of wood and stone bonsai, have a unique taste.

After passing through an arched courtyard gate, you will enter the Longjia Garden in the old park in the central region, and the main garden buildings include Bixi Caotang, Chengyi Pavilion, Hexagonal Pavilion, Flower Pavilion, Boat Hall, Xiyin Bookstore, Bamboo Garden, PenSheng Flower Hall, Guijilu and Xiao Pengying.
Among them, Bixi Caotang, Chengyi Pavilion and Hexagonal Pavilion are all built on the banks of the lotus square pond, forming a small garden landscape. Bixi Caotang, built during the Daoguang years, is the residence built by Long Tinghuai for his adoptive mother, and it is also the earliest surviving building in Qinghui Garden.

The main entrance of Bixi Caotang is round and cave-shaped, the door frame is equipped with a hollowed-out bamboo wood carved round light shield, and on the skirt board of the glass screen door on both sides, each engraved with forty-eight different forms of "Shou" characters, called "Baishou Tu", exquisite craftsmanship, antique.
The green plaques, bamboo carvings and "hundred life maps" all convey the garden owner's good wishes for her mother's vitality, health and longevity, and filial piety is touching.

Chengyi Pavilion and Hexagonal Pavilion, standing next to the pond, have corridors connected with Bixi Caotang, which is a good place for the owner and mother to enjoy the scenery. In the hot summer, the pond has become an excellent place to escape the heat and cool off.
Walk from the lotus pond to the center of the garden, where the trees are lush and green. The first thing that catches your eye is the flower pavilion hidden in the green cover, and in the pavilion, there is a feeling of red dust in the evergreen bushes.
Next to the flower pavilion is the "Lion Mountain", where dieshan craftsmen use ingenious artistic techniques to build large and small stones into three lions, one big and two small, vividly appearing. This "Lion Mountain" is together with the "Lion On the Terrace" of Dongguan Keyuan and is known as the Masterpiece of Lingnan Garden.

To the north from the flower pavilion is the boat hall of the main building of Qinghui Garden, which is said to have been the embroidery pavilion of Miss Longjia, so it is commonly known as the Miss Building. The boat hall combines the architectural shape of Wuxi Jichang Garden and the "Purple Cave Boat" of Pearl River Painting Garden, and builds a double-storey ship-type brick building.
The ship hall is divided into three parts: bow, cabin and stern, which has become the only example in the history of ancient architecture. There are two ponds on the left and right of the bow, the sand willows on the left side of the pond are like wood pulp, and the wisteria next to the sand willows is like a cable, or moving forward or mooring, all of which are in control.

The hall is surrounded by green trees, ponds, and clear water, and there are hollow plantains, bamboo trees, snails and other wood carvings in the cabin, and it seems that you can really feel the idyllic atmosphere of the Pearl River Delta where people are in the boat and on the water.
The quaint and elegant Xiyin Book House and Zhenyan Zhai, built next to the boat hall, are the places where the owner of the garden receives guests and children of the clan to read. Xiyin Bookstore has the intention of encouraging children to cherish time and study hard. True Yan Zhai means seeking truth and pragmatism.

The plaque "Deep in the Green Clouds" on the corridor of the Xiyin Book House is written by the eleventh son of the Qianlong Emperor, the calligrapher and prince of Cheng, Ai Xinjueluo Yongyao, which vividly depicts the quiet scenery surrounded by green trees around the book house.

From the Xiyin Bookstore through the veranda and courtyard, you come to a secluded place called "Bamboo Garden", which is the place where the owners meet and live, including the Pen Sheng Flower Hall, Gui Ji Lu, Xiao Peng Ying and Wooden Building.

The couplets on both sides of the moon cave door of the bamboo garden are "the wind is full of bamboo rhymes, and the moon is everywhere and the fragrance is fragrant", which points out the quiet weather here. The garden is full of flowers and bamboo, the hedge is sandwiched, and the green bamboo is Xiaoxiao, which has the potential to plunge straight into the clouds, but it brings people a quiet and indifferent feeling.
Su Dongpo once said, "It is better to eat without meat than to live without bamboo." "Bamboo has both humility and high festivals, is the third friend of the cold, but also a gentleman in the flower, often praised by the literati, than the gentleman's wind."
Walking to the end of the Bamboo Garden Passage, on the left is the "Pen Sheng Flower Hall", the name of the museum is taken from Li Bai's "Dream Pen Sheng Hua" classic, which means "academic success, outstanding literary talent".
On the right is "Gui Zhi Lu", the plaque is inscribed by the Qing Dynasty calligraphy master Li Wentian, which means "resign the official to return to the li, send the courtyard", to commemorate the reason why Long Tinghuai resigned from the official to return to his hometown and build a garden to worship his mother.

Xiao Pengying is connected to the Guijilu Corridor, named after the two legendary sea fairy islands of Penglai and Yingzhou, which obviously conveys the otherworldly heart of the owner, and the plaque is the handwriting of Song Xiang, a famous poet and calligrapher during the Qianlong period.
In the hall of the small pengying, there is a large-scale painted wood carving work "Baishou Peach", which is full of leaves and peaches, which means longevity and sets off the joy of the hall, which is a rare art treasure.

From the naming and use of small garden buildings such as Xiyin Bookstore, Zhenyanzhai, Bamboo Garden, and PenSheng Flower Hall, it seems that you can see the old times in Qinghui Garden and the history of the poetry and book heirlooms.
As a local noble family, the Long family is also a scholarly mendi, and has always had a fine tradition of revering culture and re-teaching. The Long clan also lived up to expectations, and produced 6 scholars, 12 lifters, many gongsheng and other academically successful people.
Perhaps it is precisely for this reason that the Qinghui Garden, which emits a strong aroma of books, has attracted many literati and inkers. So we were able to see the calligraphy works inscribed by famous people such as Yong Yao, Song Xiang, Li Wentian, He Shaoji and other celebrities, which made the garden shine brightly.
The ingenious designs such as Baishou Tu, Baishou Peach, and Xiao Pengying in the garden all reflect the sincere and good wishes of the owner of the garden to pray for the health and longevity of his parents, which is also the careful practice and concrete performance of the name of "Qinghui".

The northwest scenic spot of Qinghui Garden is a number of garden buildings that have been restored in recent years in accordance with the principle of repairing the old as old, mainly including Liufen Pavilion, Zhuangyuan Hall, Mu Yingjian, Hongruo Book House, Eight Tables laixiang Pavilion, Fenglai Peak, Reading Yunxuan and other scenic spots.
Coming out of the bamboo garden and walking through a veranda, you can see that in the pool, there stands a rockery made of stone, because it looks like nine lions of different sizes, so it is called "Nine Lions Mountain".

After passing through the small building of the clouds, you will reach the courtyard where the tallest building in the garden, Liufen Pavilion, is located.

This is a portrayal of the upright personality of many scholars and doctors at the end of the Ming Dynasty, and their loyal and indisputable feelings of home and country and national integrity are admirable.

After passing through the green clouds from The Liufen Pavilion, we came to the Zhuangyuan Hall. In the hall, there is a statue of Huang Shijun, a student born in a small town in Lingnan and who fell from a family in the middle of a family road, who won the championship in the imperial examination in one fell swoop, and the later official to Zaifu is really an inspirational model.
Walking into the Zhuangyuan Hall, the solemn and elegant decoration is a tribute to The four Shunde Zhuangyuan of Zhang Zhensun, Huang Shijun, Zhu Kezhen and Liang Yaoshu, and it is also a tribute to the ancestors.
This building, which was rebuilt from the Dragon Family Private School, highlights Shunde's extraordinary achievements in the era of the imperial examination, allowing visitors to appreciate Shunde's profound cultural heritage in a world that exudes a strong atmosphere of books.

Different from the single-family buildings of Zhuangyuantang, Mu Yingjian is a group of exquisite and elegant buildings. Coming in from Muying Gate, you can see very conspicuously that directly above the entrance is a set of "Eight Views of Yangcheng" glass products evaluated during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty.

The eight scenes painted on it are "White Cloud Evening Look", "Chase Smoke and Rain", "Puzhangqian Spring", "Fuxu Bath Day", "Pearl River Night Moon", "Jinshan Ancient Temple", "Jingtai Monk Return" and "Stone Gate Return". Sunlight is projected onto the glass, shining with a dazzling golden light.
These eight pieces of painted etched gold sheet glass are the only set of chromatic carved glass treasures of the eight views of the old Yangcheng in the Qing Dynasty that have survived, which have extremely high cultural relics value and have been rated as national first-class protected cultural relics.

Continue forward, along the veranda across the pool, you can see the quaint and elegant Red Lotus Book House. Its characteristics are that there is no brick wall, and the columns are all separated by partitions, especially the stained glass inlaid around it, which is bright and transparent.

These glasses are either painted with still life patterns such as Baoding, vases, fruits, etc., or outline the landscapes of bamboo and stone orchid plates, small bridges and flowing water, magpies and plums, etc., with unique decorations, which can be called masterpieces that break through the traditional Chinese garden color style.
In front of the bookstore, there is a pool of blue water, planted with red lotuses, corresponding to the name of the red lotus. Next to the wall by the pool, there are strange stones, chandeliers and flowers are blooming, and all kinds of plants are full of vitality. In this quiet and open bookstore, it should be so pleasant to splash ink and chant the wind and make the moon.
Stepping out of the bookstore and heading west through the veranda, is the Eight Tables Pavilion. This pavilion is placed in the center of the octagonal circulation of the pond and is a unique octagonal building. Its façade is all windows, inlaid with transparent glass, transparent and bright, eight sides exquisite, so it is also called Linglong Xie.

The southeast is the "Spring Stone", with bamboo trees and shrubs, highlighting the sense of verdant. In the southwest is the "Summer Stone", which is also the main peak of Qinghui Garden - Fenglai Peak.
To the west is the "Autumn Stone", which is made of yellowstone fortifications as a mountain, and there are maple trees, osmanthus flowers and other trees planted next to it, rendering the atmosphere of autumn. The north side is the "Winter Stone", which uses the white taihu stone with a white stone surface, which has the meaning of snow scenery.

In the past, the owner of the garden must have sat in the pavilion with his relatives and friends, or watched the scenery by the pond, or tasted tea and flowers, or painted poems and paintings, feeling the elegant rhyme of the wind on all sides and the fragrance of the eight tables.
Walk towards the "Summer Stone" southwest of Linglong Xie, that is, see Fenglai Peak. This stone mountain, using the classic "wind and clouds" stacking mountain method, is made of Shandong granite layer by layer, with a maximum height of 12.8 meters, which is the largest and highest granite granite mountain in Guangdong Province.

The quaint doors and windows, exquisite furniture and exquisite wood carvings reflect the good aesthetic taste of the Longjia Shuxiang Mendi. It is precisely because of this that Qinghui Garden is eclectic, integrating Ming and Qing Dynasty Yashi culture, Lingnan characteristics, Jiangnan style and Western elements, forming a unique garden style in the history of classical gardens. The ancients said, "Loyalty and filial piety are difficult to be complete", and if they cannot be enterprising and loyal, they will retreat to filial piety. Whether it is Huang Shijun's resigned adoptive father or Long Tinghuai's garden-building mother, the two upright scholars, the understanding and pursuit of loyalty and filial piety are roughly the same.
From the Zhuangyuan Mansion at the end of the Ming Dynasty to the Shuxiang Mendi in the Qing Dynasty, Qinghui Garden was built for filial piety and is also famous for filial piety.
