3. Change words to avoid secrecy:

The ancients had the custom of avoiding the names of monarchs and elders, and Wu Zhenren was honored by the real people and the king and the emperor. In order to avoid the name of the emperor, the believers turned the "ben" to the word "夲" when writing, and read it as "tao" when reading, which is actually a relatively simple method of avoiding secrecy.

4. The custom of taking a lowly name, the meaning of "夲" in the southern Fujian dialect has the meaning of "忑 knot" (stupid).

Folk have the custom of taking "untouchable names" in the hope that children will be strong in the future, that is, "the name is cheap and good to feed", such as "A cat, dog leftovers" and so on. In the southern Fujian dialect, "夲" has the meaning of "忑 knot" (stupid, 戆消), which is in line with the custom of taking a lowly name.

5. Inference of indecent consonant "no origin":

Some people have the same Mandarin pronunciation as "Wu Ben" as "Wu Ben", which means ominous, so it is inferred that the name of the emperor will not be "Ben", but the word "夲".

6. The Legend of Longchi Rock:

According to folklore, before Emperor Baosheng took the name, the Virgin Huang Yuehua prayed with her hands folded at the Longchi Zen Temple (Baijiao Village, Taitou District, Zhangzhou), and the Holy Father Wu Tong took the emperor's single name from the "big" character of the Great Compassion Hall, and the "ten" of the Mother of God's hands together to form the word "夲".

(1) Literature comparison of the provenance of the name:

When the official revision of the Zhishu, there are relatively strict requirements for editing and reviewing, and the handling personnel are generally led by well-known jinshi in the local or neighboring areas, and are compiled by gathering learned children and students, so Fang zhi is generally a more authoritative and credible document in various places. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, each edition of the "Haicheng County Chronicle", "Tong'an County Chronicle", and related fuzhi, each addition and re-revision is a re-proofreading and supplement of the previous version, if there is an error in the previous chronicle, it will be explained in the "Correction" chapter or added or deleted in the original chapter. However, in this type of chronicle, the name of Baosheng The Great has always used the word "Ben", which has a high degree of credibility; and the "White Reef Zhiluo" was published in 1887 as one of the "Four Divine Zhiluo" compiled by the late Qing Dynasty scribe Yang Jun, which is a summary of the data on the original gods of Quanzhou Province, which is more subjective, and the "Maxiang Hall Zhi" compiled at the same time adopts Yang Jun's point of view, which is the only two cases recorded in the literature, representing only the words of one family and not the general content.

(2) The relevance of the name and the word:

When the ancients used words by name, they generally considered the similarity of the meanings of the two. For example, Du Fu, the character is beautiful, Fu is beautiful; the emperor's word "Huaji" corresponds to "ben", but it is incompatible with "夲".

(3) The harmonic expression of "no origin" is insufficient:

The name comes from the subjective willingness of the parents to take the name. Since the Song Dynasty, the people of southern Fujian, who live in a remote southeastern corner, have used more Southern Fujian dialect than Mandarin. The pronunciation of "Wu" and "none" in the Southern Fujian dialect is not the same. If Emperor Baosheng's parents had spoken Mandarin and thought that the harmonic sound "no root" was indecent, it would have been impossible to name the holy brother "Wu Gen" with the harmonic sound "no root". Therefore, it can be considered that the harmonic sounds of "Wu Ben" and "Wu Gen" in the Hokkien dialect do not exist, which is also far-fetched with the saying that the Hall of Great Compassion is called "夲" in the palm of the Great Compassion Hall.

(4) The character "Ben" is often written in calligraphy in the form of "夲":

Among the various types of existing calligraphy works, it is almost certain that all those who write the character "夲" are all this character, such as Zhao Mengfu's "Preface to the Dingwu Lanting Pavilion", and the near ones are like Chiang Kai-shek's handwriting, and the list goes on. As for the inscriptions and links of some palaces and temples, if there is a "夲" glyph, under the circumstances of the time, it also refers to the word "Ben".

"Ben" is so easy to write as "夲", so it is no wonder that there are many words "Wu 夲" in the literature about Wu Zhenren. In fact, in some literature, the word "夲" originally meant "本", but because of the shape of the writing style "夲", it led to the late learners forcibly pronouncing it as "tao" sound.

(5) Analysis and speculation of changing words due to avoidance

"Surname" is a gift from the clan, "name" is the parents Hui took, "word" Guan family Zhaomu, "number" can entertain themselves, "secret" is a coffin theory. This analysis and speculation is a compromise view, although there is no documentary evidence, but it is also in line with custom. However, the object of debate in this case is "name", and the name given by the parents at birth is not a self-absorbable "word" or "number". Wu Zhenren was born without a reason for avoidance, and there is no such custom of avoidance today, and the theory of changing words is another matter.

In addition, in the southern Fujian dialect, "stupid" means another word, not "夲". Most of the untouchable names are milk names and small names, and not "big names" are referred to here as "big names".

How did "Ben" and "Ram" become a pair of joyful enemies? "Wu Ben" has been called for nearly a thousand years, and in the last 150 years, "Wu Meng" has emerged, and even has the meaning of making a noise. Below we look at the inextricable connection between the pronunciation and writing of the two words.

In addition to the "夲" can be read "ben", the writing style of "Ben" is often written as the shape of "夲" of "Shangda Xiashi", such as Wang Xizhi of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Mi Fu of the Northern Song Dynasty, Yan Zhenqing of the Tang Dynasty, etc., and the near ones such as the contemporary Qi Gong and Chiang Kai-shek.

In a word: the two characters are similar, the word "Ben" can be written in the shape of "夲", but it cannot be pronounced as "tao" sound, and "夲" can be pronounced as "ben" sound, but it cannot be written in the shape of "Ben". If it is interpreted as "basic", it must be read "ben". After understanding the phonetic connection between "Ben" and "夲", it is not difficult for us to understand the reason why the thousand-year-old Baosheng Emperor's name "Wu Ben" was misread and written as "Wu Ben" in the 150 years from the middle and late Qing Dynasty to the present.

In summary, the Minnan Cultural Research Association of Haicang District and the Qingjiao Tzu Chi Ancestral Palace believe that in view of the fact that the unity of the name is conducive to the unity of the faithful and the promotion of the Baosheng culture, in order to respect the authoritative records, respect for customs and traditions and naming rules, respect for folk customs and the recognition of believers, it is recommended that the official, academic circles, and folk (palace temple) unify their understanding, and the name of Baosheng The Great is "Ben".
