The first time I saw the stone painting, I felt like I saw a transparent squid.
Transparent squid is a sea creature that is a master of camouflage with luminescence. Unlike other species that use luminescence as an attraction, transparent squid uses light as a cover to escape the gaze of predators. With the exception of opaque eyes and punctate pigmented bodies throughout the body, transparent squid is almost all-transparent. The punctate pigment is not a tissue, but the color of the opaque eyes of transparent squid exposes their body shape. Many species prey by scanning the waters above them to see if they can spot the outlines of their prey. To confuse potential predators, transparent squid use two U-shaped emitters that glow at the base of their eyes. This light eliminates shadows from opaque eyes. This strategy is often referred to as "backlighting," and it can disperse the silhouette shadows of transparent squid by adjusting the brightness and color of the light.
