Gao Jianfu is an outstanding Chinese painter and art educator in modern China, and the main founder of the Lingnan School. Born in 1879 in Panyu, Guangdong. In 1892, he began to study painting with Ju Lian. In 1905, he went to Japan to study fine arts. While in Japan, he joined the Chinese League. In 1908, the first solo exhibition was held in Guangzhou, marking the formation of the Lingnan School.
On the occasion of the 140th anniversary of Gao Jianfu's birth, the Guangzhou Museum of Art, together with the Palace Museum, the National Art Museum of China, the Shanghai Museum, the Tianjin Museum, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Museum, the Guangdong Provincial Museum, the Dongguan Museum, the Lingnan School Of Painting Memorial Hall and other institutions, selected their own collections of Gao Jianfu's paintings to hold this exhibition, trying to show Gao Jianfu's lifelong mechanical and researched creative process and outstanding independent artistic style, in order to commemorate this generation of lingnan school masters.
