"Application Modernization" is a new concept of HUAWEI CLOUD. In recent years, with the penetration of the wave of digital transformation, cloud service providers have ushered in a golden period of development, and HUAWEI CLOUD, which was only launched in 2017, has gathered more than 2.3 million developers, more than 6,000 technology partners, and more than 4,500 cloud market products, and industry participants represented by HUAWEI CLOUD are also exploring the future development direction of cloud services. Xu Feng, director of huawei cloud paaS service product department, pointed out at the summit that the epidemic has accelerated the digitization process of the whole industry, applications or software, playing an important role in the daily operation of enterprises, IDC data shows that by 2025, 25% of China's top 500 companies will become software producers. There are also data that believe that by 2025, about 7% of enterprises will release new software versions every day, and one of the refractions of high-frequency competition between enterprises is that software will be iterated at a high speed. Traditional applications are built on traditional IT technology, and currently face quite a few problems, such as long development cycles, complex application architecture, slow deployment, difficult to scale, and separation between development and operation and maintenance.
HUAWEI CLOUD believes that modern applications should meet five typical characteristics: high availability, endogenous security, and extreme elasticity (the computing power of applications can be dynamically adjusted with changes in traffic volume to ensure business continuity in high concurrency and high traffic scenarios), efficient and agile (simplifying the application lifecycle process, increasing the frequency of application release, and using agile iteration of applications to adapt to rapidly changing user and market demand), converged governance (new and old applications can coexist and evolve, cross-cloud connectivity, and in reality, applications of the same enterprise may be deployed in the public cloud, Private, edge, or just deployed on-premises).
To achieve application modernization, HUAWEI CLOUD proposes to guarantee four levels: infrastructure modernization, architecture and design modernization, development and O&M modernization, and governance and operation modernization.
In terms of infrastructure, some industry insiders believe that most of the IT construction of enterprises has gone through three stages, one is to take the equipment as the center, the enterprise is willing to purchase servers, build the computer room, and form an IT team; the second is to take the resource as the center, the enterprise is willing to go to the cloud, and cloudify its own resources; the third is to take the application as the center, the enterprise builds its own application for the cloud, the business is born in the cloud, grows up in the cloud, and advances from on cloud to in cloud. HUAWEI CLOUD believes that the key to infrastructure modernization is to adopt cloud-native infrastructure and use distributed clouds.
In terms of architecture and design, the more mainstream view is to use a microservices architecture and a serverless architecture to split the application into different modules that can be independently and quickly released.
DevOps modernization emphasizes the integration of development and operations, while governance operation modernization emphasizes the ability to build an application architecture that can evolve smoothly to maximize the value of new and old assets. In the view of IT people, not only data is valuable, code is valuable, code often condenses IT personnel's understanding and solution experience of industry problems, starting from 0 to write code and writing code based on the experience of predecessors, the difficulty is naturally different.
In a media interview after the summit, Xu Feng admitted that there is no measurable standard for application modernization in the outside world, and HUAWEI CLOUD put forward the concept of application modernization, which also calls on the industry to pay attention to application performance, solve the problems existing in the current application, and make unified standards for application modernization.
According to The Forrester report, 67% of enterprises believe that traditional applications need to be transformed.
