On November 19, 1948, Chang Menglan's regiment was ordered to withdraw from Guanwai. Chang Menglan did not care about the lives of the warriors, but he had his concerns: if the main force also encountered the enemy on the other side, and failed to convey to us the signal of retreat. At this time, the enemy also launched a fourth attack, this time using incendiary bombs. Chang Menglan took the machine gun and angrily shot at the enemy, but unfortunately, he was outnumbered and had to retreat. After breaking away from the enemy's encirclement, Chang Menglan returned to his senses, and several of the soldiers accompanying him were lost.
There were no other enemies on the way, nor did they encounter the main force. That means that the main force has been safely withdrawn, but why didn't the signal of retreat be heard?
With such doubts, Chang Menglan began a long search for the army, which was 48 years. A year passed, and fast forward to October 1, 1949. After the founding ceremony, Chang Menglan came to Beijing and found a military district that housed veterans who had been separated from the war. Chang Menglan did not need to be sheltered, but still left a message, eager to return to the army one day. Time flickered and two years, and for two years, Chang Menglan longed for letters from Beijing every day. He knew it would be useless to be in such a hurry, so he came to Beijing again. The comrades in the shelter told him that his unit had gone to Korea to participate in the War of Resistance. Let Chang Menglan continue to go home and wait, Chang Menglan is a soldier, he accepted this task and continued to wait.
Time passes like this, ten years, twenty years... In the forty years of searching, the northeast, Shanxi, Baoding, and Shijiazhuang all left traces of Chang Menglan's painstaking search, but the troops he belonged to were like evaporation in the human world, and they found nothing after forty years.
In the disappointment again and again, Chang Menglan plucked up the courage to continue to search, which was not only the persistence of a soldier, but also to get an answer. He wanted to ask the company commander if the troops had been safely evacuated at that time, and why he had not heard the signal to retreat.
Years of unremitting searching have made Chang Menglan's life a bit sloppy, and sometimes he has to make a living by picking up scraps. Save a little money and continue his journey. One day, a training ground in a military academy was in the village of Kita-Takeri. Let Chang Menglan feel everything that was once familiar. He took the initiative to find the responsible official and begged to stay and do what he could. One after another, everyone gradually became acquainted.
Everyone also knows the deeds of this veteran who has not succeeded in his search for the army over the years, and they have taken special care of this veteran. Give him money, don't. I had to send some grain, oil and rice noodles that were necessary for life. When Chang Lao arrived, the troops had already changed houses to a small town, and Chang Lao pounced again. But Chang Lao is not discouraged, so many years have come, I am not bad to go another period. It's Chinese New Year's Eve, and it's hard to see cars on the road. It was hard to hitchhike to the town where the troops were stationed. By this time it was pitch black, and the sky was drifting with goose feathers and heavy snow. Knowing that there were still a few kilometers away from the garrison, Chang Lao gritted his teeth and showed the unique perseverance of the soldiers. After verifying the identity of Chang Lao, the head of the unit wanted this veteran who had been running all his life to spend his old age in the Invalides, but Chang Lao said: I have come to restore my life, not to ask for merit. After staying for a while, Chang Lao returned to his hometown.
