Akira Toriyama World Exhibition and its ultimate collection

Is comics an art? Even in Japan, known as the "Kingdom of Manga," this issue was controversial until 1990, when Osamu Tezuka's works were exhibited at four art museums, including the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, when questions such as "Why do public art museums hold manga exhibitions?" And the integration and exploration of comics and modern art may have just begun...

From December 1993 to August 1995, an exhibition called "Akira Toriyama's World" toured several public art museums and other public venues in Kawasaki, Asahikawa, Kobe, Tokyo, Kumamoto, and other places in Japan. People stop in front of the color drawings of "Dragon Ball" and "Aralei", as well as the game setting drawings of "Dragon Quest" and "Time Journey", immerse themselves in the wonderful world created by Akira Toriyama with G nibs and watercolor pens, and feel the shock of the original large-scale manga at close range. When the exhibition came to an end, the exhibition, which takes a look back at Akira Toriyama's creative journey from 1978 to 1995, eventually attracted more than 3 million visitors. According to the organizers of the Yomiuri Shimbun and the Art Museum Liaison Council, Akira Toriyama has adhered to the spirit of "pursuing the possibility of manga development with superior sensibility and excellent expressiveness" in Osamu Tezuka and Akitaro Ishimori, and is the most capable of "symbolizing the present present of [Japanese manga]". Even the most demanding art critics have to admit that Akira Toriyama's work has long gone beyond the single form of manga, and has deeply influenced people's real lives through a variety of media such as manga, animation, and video games, allowing people to see the penetration and expansion of manga into modern society.

Art critic Yusuke Nakahara commented on the "Toriyama Akira World Exhibition": The characteristics of this exhibition are the "comprehensive presentation" of Akira Toriyama's works. That is, by displaying the original manuscripts, from the perspective of pursuing the development of the story when reading manga, we can trace the trajectory of the formation of Akira Toriyama's characters.

Throughout the Akira Toriyama Exhibition, the organizers launched a large number of peripherals: reproduction of original paintings, large posters, art albums, T-shirts, small to various stationery, mobile phone chains, badges, souvenir envelopes, postcards, calling cards, business card holders... countless. Among the many surrounding objects, there are three items that can be called the ultimate collection of the Toriyama Akira World Exhibition.

Ultimate Collection No.3 Album - Commemorative Edition of the Venue of "Toriyama Akihi world"

Akira Toriyama World Exhibition and its ultimate collection

This collection was originally released at the Toriyama Akira World Exhibition held at the Mitsukoshi Art Museum in Shinjuku, Tokyo from April 22 to May 21, 1995. In the same year, he appeared in the Nagoya Civic Art Exhibition Room and the Kumamoto Prefectural Art Museum. As his friend Jonathan put it, "It is no exaggeration to call it the condensed catalogue of Akiyama's world exhibition as of April 1995, including magazine covers, color manuscripts, and game settings drawn by Akira Toriyama. In terms of content, it is also different from the album of the same name that was released at the opening of the 1993 art exhibition with Goku in a US military uniform driving a locomotive as the cover (pictured below). First of all, the cover of this album uses a new painting specially painted by Mr. Akira Toriyama for the touring exhibition: Indian teenagers and cowboy girls driving flying machines to avoid pursuit. Secondly, 16 pages of Dragon Ball illustrations from 1994-95 were added to the content, as well as 8 pages of illustrations and settings for the game's fantasy "Time Journey", which was just released on March 11 of the same year. It can be said to be the ultimate collector's edition of the collection "Toriyama Akihiwa".

Ultimate Collection NO.2 Akira Toriyama World Exhibition Reproduces the original collection of paintings

Akira Toriyama World Exhibition and its ultimate collection

Many friends have not understood the difference between copying the original painting and scanning the version obtained with the book. Then this passage from your friend Jonathan in the article "Peerless in the World - Inoue Yuhiko Ronin's Original Manuscript Collection" may be able to solve your years of confusion: "In the process of converting the original manuscript of the manga artist into a print, due to printing reasons, the picture will lose a lot of details, whether it is the thickness of the line or the thickness of the ink, it will not be perfectly reproduced, even if the so-called "complete version" can not completely restore the lines written by the manga artist." The beauty of copying the original manuscript is that "the printed material does not reflect the atmosphere of the original painting as much as possible" (Inoue Yuhiko). On the oversized picture that is no different from the size of the original manuscript, the delicacy of the brushstrokes and the twists of the lines are clearly visible, and it is almost conceivable to see how the author breathes, how to write, and how to hesitate when painting. For those who love comics, copying original manuscripts is both a precious collection and the best teaching material. And this set of 10 pages, A3 folio, contains a number of drafts by Mr. Akira Toriyama, and the original album of the completed copy is also the only one known today, and its preciousness need not be said, it is definitely a rare and valuable collection. The content includes two color copies of the "Me and Animation" comic strip, "Tranx. The Last Warrior has one title page line draft, three dragon ball "Saru Games" pencil drafts, one short manga character and scene setting, and three character settings and vehicle settings for the anime Kosuke and Ritsumaru No. Takahira Island. (Imagine how many pencil drafts of Mr. Akira Toriyama have seen, and you know the value of its collection.)

Ultimate Collection No.1 Akira Toriyama Rare Large-Scale Reproduction of Original Paintings

Akira Toriyama World Exhibition and its ultimate collection

"April 22 から東京の三越美術館で、鳥山展が開かれてる。 新しく描きおろした絵(リトグラフ)も発売中!! In the concluding comments of the 1995 JUMP21-22 merger, Mr. Akira Toriyama said so. Chinese: From April 22, the Toriyama Exhibition will be held at the Mitsukoshi Museum of Art in Tokyo. My new paintings will also be on sale at the exhibition. The work mentioned by Mr. Toriyama is the one in the picture above, which is the cover of the commemorative edition of the commemorative edition of the exhibition specially painted by Mr. Akira Toriyama for this touring exhibition mentioned above. The original of this figure is said to have been completed in early April 1995 and measures 34.5*25.0CM. The method of obtaining the original painting was to visit the Shinjuku Mitsukoshi Art Museum, the Nagoya Citizens' Art Exhibition Room, and the Kumamoto Prefectural Art Museum 's touring exhibition to buy it (the details are unknown). The previous sections mentioned the subtlety of reproducing the original painting. So no matter how hard you scan the cover of the commemorative edition of the toriyama Akira World, it still can't be compared with this B4-size reproduction of the original painting, because those details have long disappeared with the evaporation of ink during the printing process. Moreover, that cover does not show the whole picture in its entirety

Another important reason why this map is rare is that there are only 200 paintings. And over time, I don't know how many more still exist. The number of this painting on display by iruka is 34/200. The picture comes from the BLOG of Japanese enthusiasts, looking at the excellent condition of preservation, I think the owner must cherish it. The painting (pictured below) which was auctioned on Nichiya a few days ago, numbered 43/200, was purchased by the seller during a visit to the Akira Toriyama World Exhibition at the Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art on July 20, 1995. This was also the first time iruka had seen someone auction this relic, and although it was somewhat damaged, it was eventually bought by someone else for 51,000 yen (to put it bluntly, the price was definitely low...). )。 Although it is far less than those who finally sold for 172999, 901,000 yen or signed for orphans. But Iruka believes the value of the chart is far beyond what money can measure.

I agree with my friend Jonathan Bo when he commented on the painting: "This painting shows the charm of Akira Toriyama's single illustration – unlimited imagination, rich story and detailed depiction." "Mr. Toriyama's watercolor coloring and line drawing are also perfectly reflected in this painting. And in this way, it vividly interprets the integration and exploration of comics and modern art. And the story and imagination revealed in the picture can definitely be compared to the plot of any movie: the American West in another world. The Indian boy and the cowboy girl, who were supposed to be mortal enemies, fought side by side, driving a flying machine that resembled the legacy of ancient civilization to avoid the enemy's pursuit. Perfect picture balance control, exquisite details depicted, painting skills set the master.

The final Akira Toriyama World Exhibition (Special Plan)

Akira Toriyama World Exhibition and its ultimate collection

Two years after the tour, the 10th and final Akira Toriyama World Exhibition was held from July 27 to August 24, 1997 at the invitation of Masudacho Manga Museum in Yokote City, Akita Prefecture, Japan's first manga-themed art museum. There is no introduction to this exhibition too much, but iruka does have some criticism. In fact, the place called masudacho Manga Museum is clearly a Yaguchi Kaohsiung Art Museum. The studio at the entrance to the exhibition hall recreates Takao Yaguchi's scenes, drawings and painting tools, and there is also his most respected manga artist on the wall. More obviously, a portrait of Mihei on the museum's nominated stone reinforces the significance of the Akita-esa's proudest manga artist. Iruka also admired Mr. Takao Yaguchi's work without the slightest dissatisfaction. But the last thing iruka understands is why there is not even a single work by Akira Toriyama in this manga museum that houses the works of many manga artists. Looking at the works of many manga artists such as Osamu Tezuka, Fujiko F Fujio, Fujiko Fujio A, Masami Cherda, Yuhiko Inoue, etc., hanging in the permanent collection everywhere, it is inevitable to complain: Why is there no Mr. Akira Toriyama?! (I hope it's just because the information on the official website is not complete, but I really can't find Akira Toriyama.... )

Akira Toriyama World Exhibition and its ultimate collection

Since the end of the long-form series "Dragon Ball" in May 1995, Mr. Akira Toriyama has gradually withdrawn from the manga world and enjoyed the joy of life, drawing short comics with interest in his spare time, and in recent years he has been in a semi-retired state. The most unacceptable thing is the IMAC given to Mr. By elite, if it were not for it, perhaps Mr. Hand-painted skills would still survive. Occasionally, I see Japanese netizens of the same age recalling in their blogs that they visited the Toriyama Akira World Exhibition in elementary school, and they hope to witness the God's Painting Exhibition again and experience the infinite charm of Mr. Toriyama's paintings again, but everything cannot be repeated. And because of the times we don't see the relevant photos, video records. But something may only fit in memory. After that, the Dragon Ball 20th Anniversary Exhibition is also rarely pictured, but this year's Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Exhibition is quite considerate, but many of the display areas of the line tips are still fresh in people's minds: photography is prohibited. The information will inevitably have some mistakes, but also ask you guys to teach one or two, thank you ~

Written here: I'm ashamed to say that the whole article belongs to me with very few words, and it looks like a summary statement. Perhaps this theme should be counted as a cooperation between Jonathan × Iruka ~ Hereby thank you to his friend Jonathan, his literary style and obsession with the art of painting have made many comic art practitioners and enthusiasts really feel, and more people will learn about his existence through the Internet and magazines in the future. For Iruka, Akira Toriyama's journey of knowledge will continue, and the quest will never end. In fact, when Jonathan was preparing to publish the article about the collection of Akira Toriyama's world exhibition in the June issue of CGWORLD Roaming Times magazine, the prototype of this article was also conceived, and it is finally completed today.
