The infighting caused by a woman: commenting on li dai and Guo Feng's fire in Chang'an

author:General Lang of the Canon

When history came to the second year of the Eastern Han Dynasty (195), Chang'an City was in the midst of a war. The two warring sides were Li Dai and Guo Feng, who were also western liang generals. Li Dai and Guo Feng were both from Liangzhou, one was from the northern land of Liangzhou and the other was from Zhangye, Liangzhou, both of whom were known for their bravery and fierceness. They were all important military generals under Dong Zhuo's account, and they were also the main force in the initial counterattack on Chang'an, and they were all out-and-out comrades-in-arms.

However, because of a woman, Li Dai and Guo Feng, two former close comrades-in-arms, began to turn against each other and broke out into a protracted military fire. So, who is this woman? How did she single-handedly provoke li dai and Guo Feng to fight among herself?

The answers to these questions can be found in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and the Book of the Later Han Dynasty. According to the Book of the Later Han Dynasty, Dong Zhuo's biography, yuan Hong's Later Han Dynasty is quoted as follows:

The infighting caused by a woman: commenting on li dai and Guo Feng's fire in Chang'an

Li Dai set up a number of wines to please be drunk, or stayed in the house to stop staying. The wife is afraid of taking her love for herself and her concubines, and she thinks of being separated. He will give gifts to his wife, and his wife will use the soy sauce as medicine. The wife said: 'Food from outside, or for a reason?' So he took the medicine and showed it, saying: "One habitat is not two males, and I firmly suspect the general's letter Li Gongye." 'He begged for help, was drunk, doubted the medicine, and drank the juice of the dung, so he suspected it," also.

In addition, the "Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms" dong zhuo biography quoted in the "Classics" also has a similar record:

Please set up a drink, or stay overnight. The wife is afraid of the concubine and the concubine and takes away her love, and thinks of it with separation. The wife will take the soy sauce as medicine, and the wife will eat, and the wife will say: "Food from outside, if there is a reason!" So he picked up the medicine and showed it, saying: "One roost is not two males, I firmly suspect the general's letter Li Gongye." "He was very drunk day after day. If you are suspicious of the medicine, you will drink the juice of the hanging dung. Therefore, there was a gap, and the soldiers attacked each other.

Through the above two records, at least two points of information can be clarified: first, the direct cause of the military fire between Li Dai and Guo Feng was the deliberate provocation of discord between Guo Feng's wife; second, the reason why Guo Feng's wife wanted to provoke Guo Feng to fight with Li Dai was because she was worried that Guo Feng and Li Dai's concubines would have an affair, thus affecting Guo Feng's favor for herself.

After clarifying the above two points of information, it can be said that Li Dai and Guo Feng were directly provoked by Guo Feng's wife in Chang'an. Guo Feng's wife, out of her own interests, designed to separate Li Dai and Guo Feng. After all, Guo Feng was a brave and unscrupulous military general, and after listening to his wife's words, his suspicion of Li Dai further deepened, the distrust between the two became stronger and stronger, and the estrangement between the two sides was difficult to return.

It should be pointed out that since Li Dai booby-trapped Fan Chou, Guo Feng has developed a suspicion of Li Dai. However, due to the situation at that time, the two have not yet openly split. Subsequently, under the deliberate separation of Guo Feng's wife, the process of open division between the two sides was significantly accelerated.

As far as the Liangzhou military clique is concerned, Li Dai and Guo Feng openly carried out military fire and merger, which undoubtedly marked a major split in their clique. After this incident, the power of the Liangzhou military clique was seriously weakened, and its dominance and influence on the situation at the end of the Han Dynasty decreased significantly.
