Xu Shiping: Hu Shuli is a person and his business

Hu Shuli is a celebrity.

Recently, she and her Caixin Media have once again attracted people's attention because of an epidemic epidemic that has swept the country, becoming a "phenomenon-level" topic. The words about her and Caixin are overwhelming. I found that these words basically came from an American magazine " The New Yorker " . Although an article in this magazine was written a few years ago, almost all of hu shuli's information circulating today is copied from the middle.

Over the years, I have often forwarded Hu Shuli's speeches and articles in the circle of friends. However, the so-called secret articles that have been widely circulated in these days are a bit disgusted and resolute, which is also an attitude. My feeling, these words, there are true and false, in the clouds and fog, not very real, there is a taste of more and more chaotic. Because, some things, the reasons for this, are more complicated and are simply not explained by some "revealing texts".

I think that for the outside world, Hu Shuli has three basic labels:

1. Senior media person, founder of Finance and Finance Media.

2, China's most dangerous woman, some foreign media evaluation.

3, a woman with a background, the language is not clear, but it is convincing.

To say that Hu Shuli is a person or a person, it seems that these three labels cannot be circumvented.

(Sisters)

Hu Shuli, formerly known as Hu Shu la (with the mother's surname). Hu Shuli's name was changed by herself (1970). She also has an older sister named Cao Zhuoya (with her father's surname). Hu Shuli and I are classmates. We were admitted to the Department of Journalism at Chinese Min University in 1978 and spent four years in the same window. To tell you the truth, during college, I didn't talk much to Hu Shuli, we were in the same class, but we were not a group. At that time, many of the local students in Beijing were close to each other because of the tight school building and the fact that they could only go to school. For example, Fan Weixuan, Yu Xiaodong, Liu Yang, Yang Daming, Zhang Ya, Wang Lang, Qi Lin and others. Hu Shuli was admitted from the army and wore a Type 65 green military uniform, but she was an authentic Beijinger. Beijing classmates are more crowded, in their words, the relationship "ferromagnetism".

Hu Shuli was petite. She never seemed to say anything about her height, and we never asked either. The New Yorker says it's 5.2 feet (158 centimeters), which I feel is a bit overrated. Anyway, one of the shortest boys in our class, about one meter and fifty-two in height, felt that Shu Li was about two or three centimeters taller than him. Probably because of his small size, Hu Shuli spoke and was particularly accustomed to holding his head high. If you don't believe it, you can go to the Internet to find her photo, almost all of them are on their backs.

Hu Shuli spoke extremely quickly and his voice was crisp and bright. Speaking English, especially special. At that time, most of our class studied English, and a few studied Japanese, French and Russian. English classes are a mixture of classes in various departments, such as history, law, journalism, and so on. According to the standard when we entered the school, we were divided into three classes: fast, middle and slow. Hu Shuli had a good level and entered the fast class. There are many handsome men in their class, including Ma Li, Li Haibo, and his husband Miao Di, and so on. She said that her speech was extremely fast, and her English-speaking classmates gave her a nickname: sparrow, which was a special image. Hu Shuli is more aggressive, likes to grab the head of the conversation, there is her occasion, basically no one else has anything to do. One year, she went to Shanghai on a business trip, and with her classmates who were also studying in Shanghai at that time, she ran to my house to rub rice and eat. One night, basically she was talking, and my father quietly pulled and asked: She is happy to talk, not tired! In the impression, Hu Shuli was energetic and never tired, and this is also true today.

Hu Shuli speaks fast, has a straight temperament, and is windy and fiery. Therefore, her classmates also called her "Little Whirlwind". Fan Weixuan, a classmate who once worked at China Youth Daily, said an interesting thing.

Once, Hu Shuli returned to Beijing from Xiamen to look for me, and I happened to be out. When I returned, the unit had already blown up the nest, and first conveyed the room Master Fan to pull me aside: "Today someone came to find you, did not register, straight into it, I did not catch up, wait until it came out, I wanted to stop, the result was that people did not see, and there was no shadow!" "I asked the man and the woman, Master Fan said, because I didn't see it!" Back at the office, Atletico Ma (now the station manager of the Hebei reporter station of Legal Daily) looked at me with a confused face: "Ah Fan, just now someone came to you, didn't hear what was said, and left!" I asked, "Male or female?" "Female!" I've roughly counted in my mind that Shula has come (the "ferromagnets" still like to call her Shura).

It turned out that Hu Shuli returned to Beijing to run errands and drove a borrowed Toyota car. Hu Shuli is small in stature, Uncle Fan in the communication room has not yet seen the driver, the car has been parked under the office building, the uncle chased to the front, found that the person has been on the elevator... The person who should be looking for was not found, Hu Shuli flew downstairs, drove, turned around, and rushed straight out the door, and Uncle Fan, who was guarding the door, still did not see what the driver looked like. This experience, to let Ah Fan say it in a Beijing film, can laugh and hurt his stomach. Later, some students invented a new joke, that is, Hu Shuli was stationed in Xiamen, and his car was often stopped by the traffic police, because the police could not see the driver, thinking that it was "unmanned", a look of doubt. This kind of thing is very likely to be fabricated. However, Hu Shuli drove fast, was hot, and was often stopped by the police, which may be a fact.

In 1982, Hu Shuli graduated from university and began his media career. According to the distribution principle at that time, it should be where to come from and where to go. There were four soldiers in our squad, two of whom returned to the unit and worked in the Xinhua News Agency Military Branch. Two took off their military uniforms, one stayed at the school, and Hu Shuli chose to go to the Workers' Daily, where her mother was. Regarding this matter, I also asked many classmates, and no one seemed to know the reason, just like when she ran from Shanxi to become a soldier. In 1985, Hu Shuli went to the Xiamen Workers Daily reporter station. This experience now seems to be a bit magnified.

In June 1987, Hu Shuli got an opportunity to study in the United States (supposedly a U.S. government-funded youth international journalistic travel event). I think it was an important turning point in her life. In a short period of american experience (three months), she received a book, "American Newspapers and Sea Observations", which is a bit like a miscellaneous record of sloppy flowers. Later, the book was republished and changed to "Visiting the United States", and a subtitle was deliberately added: "Observation and Writing under the Concept of Journalistic Professionalism". Mr. Zhan Jiang, a professor at the Department of International Journalism and Communication of Beijing University of Foreign Chinese, wrote a preface for her, which belongs to the "old works and new editors". Did the journalistic professionalism that Hu Shuli later insisted on come from this?

Xu Shiping: Hu Shuli is a person and his business

Hu Shuli returned from the United States, a group of classmates gathered for dinner, and there was a story. At that time, the students all thought that she would definitely never return to the United States. During the banquet, some students asked: Why did you come back? As a result, she said a paragraph and made the classmates laugh. She said, I began to think, no matter how bad our English is, we are always better than the African people, right? Who knows...... (She means, black Americans are better than her English), no, let's come back, only the motherland is the place to show their talents. This study tour experience in the United States, especially the work internship experience of American news organizations, had a relatively large impact on Hu Shuli.

Since then, she has begun to ponder "journalistic professionalism", which seems to be a little uneasy. In the years since, she has been looking for opportunities to put her ideals into practice. First of all, through the introduction of Yang Daming, a classmate, he went to the "China Industry and Commerce Times". This experience, Hu Shuli himself has said, it is a memorial article remembering the old newspaperman Ding Wang (you can find it). During this period, Hu Shuli began to contact a large number of celebrities in the economic and financial circles (such as Wu Jinglian and others) and opened "financial high-level interviews", which had a great impact. Hu Shuli's financial connections probably stem from this. A few years later, Hu Shuli was given another opportunity to study in the United States, supposedly majoring in economics, and the study tour was longer than the last time in the United States.

Hu Shuli's fame stems from finance and finance and caixin media. Perhaps, few people know that before she founded Finance and Economics, she had a period of experimental experience running a magazine. In January 1997, Beijing had a magazine originally belonging to the Beijing Municipal Government Research Office, The Development Zone Guide Magazine. Its executive issuer and editor-in-chief is classmate Liu Yang (later president of Macao Five Star Satellite TV), Hu Shuli was invited to be the chief reporter, after 18 issues of cooperation, Hu Shuli became the editor-in-chief in the practical sense, with the signature of "Shu Jing" as the main writer. This magazine, priced at $32, is a monthly magazine. Their ideal is to become "China's Forbes". Take a closer look at the cover of this magazine, and it really has a Bit of Forbes flavor.

(The cover characters are all cattle people)

Since then, Hu Shuli has embarked on the road of running an independent journal. Liu Yang's evaluation of Hu Shuli afterwards was quite high. "She is very knowledgeable and good at dealing with all kinds of people in magazines, has a very high emotional intelligence, and uses all her sharp instincts on articles instead of competing with her peers." "Getting things done is her only belief." Behind her trademark frankness and sophistication, she has a sensitivity to risk that is unmatched by ordinary people. She convinced me that excellence does not come from extraordinary bravery, but also from extra caution. "This magazine, in the end, did not become China's Forbes.

The latter things, everyone knows, not much to say. Hu Shuli cooperated with Wang Boming (Wang Bingnan's son, he also has a brother named Wang Dongming, former chairman of CITIC Securities) to found a famous financial magazine. Hu Shuli's journalistic professionalism mentions greater room for display. Independent, exclusive, and unique, it has become her policy of running the journal. However, Hu Shuli's superiority lies in the fact that they always use cautious and objective language to analyze and investigate and sort out things, she never is rude, not angry, not harsh, but focuses on a very measured angle, they always preset a good idea or vision, and then tell everyone why it cannot become a reality, which should not be ah. This angle, although it makes some people unhappy, can not say anything. There is a saying that has been widely circulated, which is what she said: "Caijing is a woodpecker, always knocking a tree down, not to knock it down, but to make it grow straighter." ”

Some people commented: Hu Shuli's skill is to know how to use other people's money to run the media he wants to run. She relies on capital and does not want capital control. Therefore, her breakup with Wang Boming is also sooner or later. In November 2009, the financial magazine became the subject of the news, and Hu Shuli led a team of capable editors to leave. In my judgment, there are three reasons for Hu Wang's breakup: one is that Wang hopes to get more involved in the editorial department business; the other is that Wang's company has more and more commercial relationships and needs to be taken care of by the editorial department or be ruthless; and the third is that the two have serious differences in their approach to new media investment. Of course, the distribution of benefits after the magazine's profit should also be a factor. It's just that they're not willing to talk about money.

From finance and economics to Caixin, from Beijing to Zhejiang, and from Zhejiang back to Beijing, the experience is complicated, not to mention. Hu Shuli has always worked hard to uphold her journalistic professionalism. Her ability is to constantly deal with capital, and at the same time try to get rid of the control of capital. This relationship is difficult to deal with. However, she seems to have done it, both by insisting on the independence of the content, not being worried by any interests, and by taking into account the interests of capital. She also found people who could understand her capital. For example, Li Ruigang, who later took over the plate. It was her persistence and her luck.

Perhaps, independent and exclusive, these three sentences, Hu Shuli looked very seriously. From finance and economics to Caixin, from Qiong Minyuan and Yin Guangxia to "whose Luneng", from SARS to today's new coronavirus, unique things often originate from exclusive investigations. Hu Shuli seems to attach particular importance to the investigative ability of journalists. Her men and women, had a tenacious and astonishing, persevering professionalism of in-depth investigation. Hu Shuli's sense of smell is sensitive. She is often able to discover something of value in advance. Perhaps, it may also be her connections that make her more informative and her senses sharper. In short, many things, she always knew earlier than others, a little prophetic. However, she generally does not blindly rush to the news and step on the so-called red line. Instead, she would raise up the news and slowly investigate and accumulate it until the official news was released. Therefore, whenever an event occurs, her magazine can always produce more informative and rich content than many of her peers. This is also the main reason why her media is concerned and respected.

Two years ago, the CEFC East Window incident occurred. In the half a year before the incident, Caixin's investigation began early. At the time, I had a subordinate who worked at CEFC Group and was in charge of public relations. Once, he came to me and said that their big boss Ye Jianming wanted to know Hu Shuli. It turned out that a reporter from Caixin had been secretly investigating CEFC Group, and they were worried that Caixin would have unfavorable reports on the company. So, I asked another classmate of Caixin, Yang Daming, about the situation and expressed CEFC's thoughts. Yang Daming is an important partner of Hu Shuli, and his importance in the Caixin editorial team is self-evident. Yang Daming said very frankly that corporate investigation is their normal way of doing things. However, they did not have any intention of sending anything to criticize CEFC. Later, I went to the Beijing Caixin headquarters to meet Hu Shuli, eat and drink, and expressed the same meaning. Her answer was much the same. Anyway, play with me haha, no positive response. I also know that there must be a reason for this, so let's stop it, and we can't force others to be difficult. As a result, Ye Jianming's dinner was not agreed, and CEFC incident occurred. Caixin's report on CEFC Group is in front of its peers.

In this kind of thing, Hu Shuli is very stubborn, she often talks about a media "firewall principle", saying that the media can not be bought, there must be a firewall inside the news, advocating that the editorial department and the business department are completely isolated, the two cannot be crossed, and the operation work cannot become any interference in the content. In this regard, she is unkind, and even the six relatives do not recognize. She insisted that journalism should be independent and must not be influenced by interest groups and sophistication. Therefore, there is a reason why some people are afraid of her and say that she is "the most dangerous woman in China". Her style of acting, either do not shoot, or shoot will definitely kill with a knife.

(Classmates gather at Putuo Mountain)

Recently, Hu Shuli and Caixin have been in the ascendant. In my opinion, without it, there are only two reasons: real objectivity, plus a sense of proportion. Someone once said that Hu Shuli is actually a particularly cautious person, and her sense of risk is particularly strong. Nevertheless, what the outside world is interested in and likes to speculate about is still Hu Shuli's background.

The so-called background is generally related to family history and experience. Regarding Hu Shuli's family lineage, there is now a clear statement. When we were studying, we only knew that she had a particularly strong elder. Therefore, everyone guessed, is it Hu Yuzhi or Hu Weiwen? They are all sub-national, and they are all special cattle. However, Hu Shuli himself never said. To be honest, it was only a few years ago that I roughly figured out what was going on. Her grandfather, Hu Zhongzhi, was an editor of the Declaration in his early years, a well-known translator, and later joined the revolution, working in the cultural units under the Shanghai Liberation Daily and the Beijing Central Liaison Department. Her grandfather's brother was named Hu Yuzhi. Regarding her parents, Hu Shuli never said, and we do not know. This is his family lineage.

Let's look at the experience. Hu Shuli belongs to the old third class, the 68th junior high school. He studied in the middle school, Comparative Cow, Beijing 101 Middle School. This middle school, when the elite gathered, some people, are still active in Chinese politics. At the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, Hu Shuli was in the first year of junior high school (5 classes). She joined the Red Guards and was one of the first to rebel, as a supporter of the "linkage" at that time. As a result, at the end of 1966, the "linkage" lost power, and hundreds of people were arrested in Gongdelin, and other younger people were also shut down by other factions in their schools. Hu Shuli is also among them. A middle school classmate recalled the incident, saying that she had visited a friend at 101 Middle School and had seen Hu Shuli, and to her surprise, Hu actually nibbled "Capital" in the trumpet. Around April 1967, the linkage veterans were released and Hu Shuli was freed. When I was a sports journalist, I had a good friend, Zang Pingfen of the Economic Daily, who was a big bull among the veterans of the 101 Middle School and wrote the famous Red Guard poem, which seemed to be "Dedicated to the Warriors of the Third World War." Zang Pingfen heard that I was a classmate of Hu Shuli and said a half-joking sentence: She was mixed with us. (Note: Zang Pingfen died of sudden heart disease in 1998)

In 1968, Hu Shuli went to Shanxi to join the team as a zhiqing. It wasn't too long, and she actually went to be a soldier. At that time, being a soldier was a particularly good place to go, especially for Zhiqing. Without access, it is estimated that it is not possible. Judging from Hu Shuli's family lineage, she seems to have no background in the army, so how can she become a soldier? Some people have analyzed that in the 1940s, there were a group of left-wing cultural people's descendants, many of whom were later trained to enter the key departments, and Hu's grandfather always had a working background in the Central Liaison Department. However, the students hardly knew what Hu Shuli's father was doing.

The place where Hu Shuli became a soldier was a military hospital in northern Jiangsu. She seems to say very little about her experience as a soldier. I vaguely remember that she said it was an advocacy officer. But in the New Yorker's report, she seems to have done everything— nurses, cafeterias, pigs, radio, and so on. Yang Daming said that perhaps Hu Shuli has been a "medical soldier", so he is quite sensitive to sars and the new crown virus, and has professional judgment. This may be one of the reasons why finance and economics of that year and today's Caixin have a particularly keen eye for the epidemic situation?

Hu Shuli is a person who is particularly good at handling interpersonal relationships. She is a particularly "self-familiar" person and is relatively good at handling various connections. Don't look at her fast talk, straight, in the words, she is very careful and proportionate, will not offend people. From high-ranking officials to commoners, she can get along with everything she needs. So much so that her men were quite devoted to her. I heard her subordinates say a sentence, "In this life, carrying shoes for Hu Shuli is worth it." Sometimes, she is caixin's "goddess father". I believe that whether it is 101 Middle School, the same class, or one level higher than her, or later in the China Industry and Commerce Times, she did "high-end financial interviews", and knew so many "young zhuang factions" (there are lists that are all cattle people do not mention), she can maintain the relationship, fully grasp it, use it for me, and get the trust of the other party. This is where she is a special cow. Extraordinary people, I can't understand, and I can't reach them at all. Therefore, in a sense, Hu Shuli's background is said to be there, and nothing is nothing.

Hu Shuli is a native of Beijing and his ancestral home is Shaoxing, Zhejiang. She pays more attention to the taste of life, dresses very appropriately, and the colors are more coordinated. Because of her nearsightedness, she often hangs a pair of glasses on her chest, and when she needs to use them, she picks them up and takes a look, which is a bit elegant. She also likes to eat Shanghainese food, presumably influenced by the family. Every time I went to Shanghai, I invited her to dinner, and the menu was ordered by herself. Shanghai cuisine is delicious, she is clear. Hu Shuli's home has not changed for decades. She has been living in a three-bedroom apartment in an old-fashioned house. This house is said to have been the unit that was assigned to his father's house that year. Many of my classmates went to that place to hang out. Two years ago, I also went to dinner. Hu Shuli seems to prefer this house. She never thought about moving out and "getting used to it." That's her saying.

Obviously, Hu Shuli's pursuit is not material wealth, but something at the inner spiritual level. Journalism is her ideal. Last year, Hu Shuli resigned as editor-in-chief and became president. Therefore, the outside world is also speculating, whether Hu Shuli wants to retreat from the rapids? A classmate who is familiar with her said that she will not retire, and that is her life, living to the old age, until death.
