In 1985, Han Shaoquan first stated in a programmatic paper "The "Roots" of Literature": "Literature has roots, and the roots of literature should be deeply rooted in the cultural soil of national traditions", and he proposed that we should "transcend the real world while basing ourselves on reality, to reveal some mysteries that determine national development and human survival." Under such a theory, writers began to create, and the theoretical circles called them "root-seeking schools."

A group of young poets with Shu Ting, Gu Cheng, Beidao, Jianghe, etc. as the pioneers, the "Obscure Poetry School" did not form a unified organizational form, nor did it issue a declaration, but it formed a "rising poetry group" with its own independent and common artistic propositions and creative achievements. At first, their poems seemed to inherit the modern or postmodern tradition, but soon they opened up new frontiers, went further, and became a kingdom of their own.

The school appeared in the late 1990s and represented writers such as Liang Wangfeng, Shen Xue, Pi Zi Cai, He Jiangbo, and Han Han. Representative works include "School Informant", "Pawnshop No. 8", "The First Intimate Contact", "Transparent Oil Painting", and "His Country".
