This article originates from the author's public account [HeyeYun Painting]
Recently, due to more things, the article has not been updated for a few days, but fortunately, I have read a book in the past two days, so today I want to talk to you about some of the gains I have gained from this book.
The title of the book is "Understanding the Medium—On the Extension of the Human Body," and I feel that it should be unfamiliar to most people, and it is recognized as a great work of thought in the "field of communication", and the author is called "Marshall McLuhan", a Canadian scholar.

If you have not read this book of friends, may not understand who he is, let's first take a look at the "Baidu Encyclopedia" to introduce him:
The book is mainly divided into two parts: the first part is mainly about theory, and the second part is mainly about application. Because the content of the book is very obscure and difficult to understand, if there is no certain accumulation of basic knowledge, it is difficult for ordinary people to understand. If you are interested in this book and want to challenge your friends, you can take the time to read it.
Next, I will talk about what I have learned from this book, and I hope to bring you some inspiration and thinking.
1
—All media are extensions of people—
First of all, the first takeaway from sharing is: "All media are extensions of people".
The whole book is basically centered around this point of view, which is the essence of the book's ideas. When I first read this book, I actually didn't understand what this idea meant, and it wasn't until I finished reading the book that I understood the weight behind this idea, which contained a thick and profound thought.
The author believes: "All media are human extensions, the transformation of some of our functions into various material materials. The book gives many examples of this idea, such as: "The car is an extension of the leg, the telephone is an extension of the mouth, the computer is an extension of the central nervous system, and so on." The above examples are not difficult to understand, as long as you combine it with more thinking in life, you can understand the meaning it expresses.
But later I found that this point of view is not difficult to understand, but to apply.
There are many media in our lives, and as long as the tools that can spread information can be collectively referred to as "media". I myself wonder what kind of value the author wants to convey to us through this point of view. Finally, I understand that since the medium is an extension of the human body, the author should be trying to inspire us "through what medium to extend our values"?
To sum up: no matter what the medium, in essence, it is a tool and extension of people, each of us should re-refresh the understanding of "media", in the era of the Internet so developed, all media can be regarded as weapons.
2
—Perception and Information—
Second, the second takeaway from sharing is: "perception and information."
It stems from a line in the book: "Electricity is stored and transported not by entities, but by perception and information." ”
There are several keywords in this sentence: "entity, perception, information," among these keywords, the word "perception" that makes me feel more unfamiliar is the word "perception".
Later, I learned that the word "perception" actually contains two meanings, "feeling" and "perception", the overall general meaning: through the feeling of an objective thing, and then the feeling through understanding and cognition of digestion and then become perception, and finally grouped together is "perception".
Returning to the title of this section - "Perception and Information", in fact, I prefer to remove the word "and" and put them together to call it " perception information", which is what I really get!
Is "perceptual information" important to us? It's actually important!
In today's flood of information, many of us actually do not have the ability to "perceive information", because the prerequisite for having this ability is: "We must have the ability to think independently about things and have insight." ”
Distinguishing and judging information is very energy-intensive, so this makes many people less willing to spend time thinking, but this ability is very important, and each of us should deliberately train the ability to "perceive information", which will become very important in the future.
3
—Time is Money—
Finally, the harvest to share with you is: "Time is money".
It's a topic we've talked about a lot, but why should I revisit it and put it to the end? For the idea that "time is money", the original text of the book reads: "Time is money, and money stores other people's time and efforts." ”
Most people now don't really understand the true meaning of this sentence, and the specific performance in reality is: "Many people don't know how to respect other people's time, so they like to talk nonsense, and others have to spend time to pay for it; many people don't know how to respect their own time, so they like to spend their time on some meaningless things, such as: ineffective socializing, chasing soap operas, and so on." ”
If we count each day we spend as if it were a dollar, how much money is left in our time account? For example, I only have more than 20,000 left! When I learned of this "balance", it completely changed my view of time, and I began to have a sense of urgency every day, which made me more clear about the true meaning of the phrase "time is money".
In life, the performance of true respect for a person in the heart is to respect his time, and at the same time, to respect his own time is to respect his own money.
At the end of the article, I would like to say: Because the weight of this book is too heavy, the ideas and values contained in it are too much and too deep, so today I can only briefly share some gains with you. At the same time, due to my limited ability, I am sorry that I have not been able to convey the true value of this book to everyone! If there are any places in the text that are not written accurately, you are welcome to correct them in the comment area, and I will humbly accept your criticism!!!
