For the first time

In the winter of 742 AD, Jian Zhen took 12 disciples and 4 Japanese monks to the Donghe Ji Temple near Yangzhou to build a boat and prepare for the East Crossing. At that time, Japanese monks had letters from the brothers of the prime minister, and the magistrates were willing to help. But unexpectedly, Jian Zhen's disciples caused infighting, and one of the disciples falsely accused Jian Zhen of colluding with pirates and preparing to attack Yangzhou. The magistrate was horrified and quickly detained a group of people. Although he was soon released, the first east crossing also died.

second

In January 744, after careful preparations, Jian Zhen organized 17 monks and hired 85 technical talents to set out again. As a result, before going to sea, the ship was sunk by the wind and waves at the mouth of the Yangtze River. After the boat was repaired, it set off again and encountered a strong wind, and the people drifted on the water for five days before they were saved.

Third time

After failing again, Jian Zhen toured the Teachings for a while, and then returned to Ashoka Temple, preparing to cross the east again. This news was known to the monks of Yuezhou, and they were very reluctant. So he reported to the government that "the Japanese monks lurked in China just to abduct and learn the truth." So the government captured Rong Rui and sent him to Hangzhou. The third eastward crossing failed.

Fourth time

As soon as Jiangsu and Zhejiang were taken away, Jian Zhen was ready to go to minnan. But as soon as I walked to Wenzhou, I was stopped. It turned out that the disciple Lingyou was worried about the safety of the master and begged the government to stop him. The fourth eastward crossing ended without any trouble.

Fifth time

In 748, Rong Rui and Pu Zhao came to Daming Temple again to ask for Jian Zhen Dongdu. Jian Zhen then led 14 monks and 35 craftsmen and sailors to the east again. However, after traveling, it was hit by a strong north wind and drifted for 14 consecutive days before seeing land. When I found out that I had arrived in Zhenzhou (present-day Sanya, Hainan), Jian Zhen stayed here for a year, bringing local Knowledge of Central Plains culture and medicine. Later, Jian Zhen traveled for a period of time in the Liangguang area, and in the process, Rong Rui died of illness and said goodbye. Jian Zhen was blinded by the quack doctors due to the disobedience of the water and soil and the fatigue of the journey, resulting in blindness. Later, he returned to Yangzhou and failed in his fifth eastward crossing. However, Kanjin also vowed that "I will not go to Japan, and my wish will not be fulfilled."

Sixth time

Because of his extensive travels, he became famous. In 753, japan sent the Tang envoy Fujiwara Kiyokawa and others to once again request Kanzen Dongdu. However, at that time, Tang Xuanzong wanted to let the Taoist priests go to Japan to preach, but after being rejected, he was very angry and did not allow Jian Zhen to go to sea. So Jian Zhen secretly boarded the big ship that sent Tang envoys, went through some twists and turns, and finally arrived in Japan.

After arriving in Japan, Kanjin was treated with a grand courtesy by the Emperor of Japan. During his time in Japan, he not only taught Buddhist doctrines, but also taught medicine to treat patients with diseases. It is known by the Japanese as the "ancestor of Kampo medicine" and "the shinnong of Japan". The Japanese Vinaya founded by Kanjin and his disciples has been passed down from now on. At the same time, Jian Zhen also brought China's leading technologies such as architecture, sculpture and literature to Japan, and promoted The development and transformation of Japan.

Jian Zhen Dongdu greatly promoted the exchange and spread of Chinese and Japanese cultures, and made Buddhism more widely promoted in East Asia. It has had a positive and far-reaching impact on Japan's religious and cultural undertakings and enhanced the friendship between the two peoples. At the same time, this is also an expansion of the circle of influence of Chinese culture.
