Experts guide students in collecting fossil specimens of brachiopods
Collect and observe entities with your own hands, touch fossils of paleontology from hundreds of millions of years ago, and take physical specimens with you. On November 3, geologists from Shanghai, Wuhan University of Geosciences and Guizhou Institute of Tourism Geology discovered a number of paleontological fossil experience points in Yaolongshan Town, Tongzi County, Zunyi City. Collect and observe entities with your own hands, get up close and personal with fossil paleontology from hundreds of millions of years ago, and take physical specimens home.
On November 3rd, geologists from Wuhan University of Geosciences and Guizhou Institute of Tourism Geology gathered in Yaolongshan Town, Tongzi County, Zunyi City, to find the imprints of ancient paleontology.
On the side of a road at the foot of Yaolong Mountain, there is a mountain rock collapse, and the collapse is a pile of black rock. Experts use geological hammers to knock a stone in the rocks, and a large number of fossils will appear.
Students collect fossil specimens
When the reporter was at the scene, a group of students, led by teachers, came here to carry out off-campus on-site teaching experience. Seeing the arrival of the geological experts, everyone eagerly handed the specimens in their hands to the experts and listened to the experts explain what the marks of the stones were.
According to experts, the penstone is a fossil of the penstone animal, because its preservation state is flattened into a carbonaceous film, much like the traces left by the pencil on the rock layer, so it is named "penstone" by scientists.
According to Guizhou Tourism Geological Research Institute Hu Xinrui, Zhang Guoxiang and other geological experts, in the past 430-460 million years ago, the current position is still an ocean, in about 460 million years, the earth's organisms experienced a major extinction, in about 440 million years, life began to recover, penstone is the most prosperous paleontology after the recovery of paleontology.
The penstone is an extinct group of marine group creatures belonging to the Phylum Hemizoan. The fossils we see now are bones secreted by the body of the penstone insect, called the penstone body. The plieroid body is a few millimeters to a few centimeters long and 1-3 mm wide.
Some of the penstones look like serrated teeth, and some look like nail rakes, so the geologists named them "saw pen stones, rake pen stones".
Dense presence of pencilstone fossils
After the death of the penstone creatures, they fell into the plastic sand mud of the sea that had not consolidated into rock, and their muscles decayed, while the hard parts and bones were preserved and petrified under the action of the later calcite, thus forming fossils. Fossils are the precious data and the most reliable basis for the study of paleogeography, paleoclimate and biological evolution, and are also the information records of the growth of the earth, which has great scientific research value.
After experts inspected the site, they found that there were many kinds of pencil fossils in this pile of rocks, such as straight, curved, ring, and sun-shaped. On a stone block that is only a few tens of square centimeters, there are dozens of densely packed pencil fossils, which are very rich in species and quantity, and the prosperity of living things at that time can be seen.
In yaolongshan, near another small village called Yakou, the most well-known geological profile measurement site in the region, a large number of brachiopod fossils were found in a clay rock not far from the profile.
Dense presence of trilobite fossils
Brachiopod fossils look a bit like the shellfish seafood eaten by modern humans. The fossil is a two-petal shell, and the two-petal shell is not equal in size, but the two sides of each shell are symmetrical, and the shell decoration is mainly concentric and radial, the most common in this area is the Guizhou Wrestling Shell, which is one of the representative fossils of the bottom of the ocean more than 400 million years ago.
These fossil individuals are very small, and more brachiopod fossils will be found by breaking through the rock formations with a geological hammer. On one of the smooth stone surfaces of about 40-50 cm, dozens of brachiopod fossils are distributed large and small, and their density is amazing. According to experts, the fossils found in the Yaolong Mountain area mainly include hornstones, corals, brachiopods, penstones, trilobites, sea lilies, algae and other fossils, and the fossils are extremely rich, fully embodying the characteristics of Guizhou's "sedimentary kingdom and paleontological kingdom", and is a rare research base for geological scientific research, geological research education, geological science popularization experience, fossil specimen collection and so on.
