The peacock fish, scientific name Poecilia reticulata, is a tropical fish of the genus Medaka in the family Medaka, an omnivorous small fish. It is native to Venezuela, Guyana, northern Brazil, and the West Indies in South America. It is very adaptable to the environment, widely distributed in the lower reaches of rivers and lakes and ditches in the tropical regions of South America, and can tolerate polluted water bodies. The suitable growth temperature is 22-24 °C, like micro-alkaline water quality, pH 7.2-7.4, mild temperament, lively and active, can be polycultured with other tropical fish, can also be single culture.

Peacock fish is an oviparous fish, super reproductive ability, after 3-4 months of rearing into sexual maturity, can breed offspring. However, the water temperature and feeding conditions will affect the sexual maturity of peacock fish. Peacock fish about once a month to produce litters, each time can produce 10-120 piglets, a year of litter production is quite large, so it is called "million fish".
Peacock fish skin is really easy to raise, and it does not require too much professional equipment.
Basic equipment
Fish tanks: You can use ordinary fiberglass, acrylic cylinders, or even plastic boxes. The shape of the fish tank is arbitrary, but it is not recommended to use a circular tank. The feeding density should not be too large, and the ideal density is two liters of water for a fish.
Heating rods: Peacock fish are tropical ornamental fish, and heating rods are essential to maintain a constant water temperature. One liter of water corresponds to two watts, which means that the fish tank with fifty liters of water should use a heating rod of one hundred watts. The use of the heating rod should be careful, the heating rod must be lower than the water surface when used, and it needs to be cut off when it is taken out, and it must be removed after 30 minutes. Ordinary heating rods and smart heating rods are available and are not recommended.
Filtration: There are a variety of filtration methods such as upper filter, side filter, back filter, external plug-in and filter cartridge. The filtration method depends on the size of the fish tank and the feeding density, and the rearing density is small, and the water can be changed regularly.
Thermometer: Used to measure the water temperature of the fish tank, the ideal temperature is 26-28 degrees. Both ordinary thermometers and smart thermometers do.
Feed: Big fish can choose color-enhancing and protein-rich feeds, not recommended. Newborn fish can be raised with egg yolk water or hatched shrimp.
Fish farming begins with water
Connect the bucket with tap water and let it sit for a day or two to let the residual chlorine in the water run away.
Overheated
The purchased fish cannot be placed directly in the fish tank and needs to be overheated. Place the fish in the water of the fish tank with the bag and let stand for 10-20 minutes. Allow the water temperature inside and outside the bag to be balanced so that the fish can slowly adapt to the temperature. When it is too warm, while mixing with the water, pour the water of the fish tank into the bag little by little, pour one-tenth of each time, pour it ten times, and finally fish out and put it in the tank.
Feeding
The newly bought fish needs to adapt to the environment and be fed after a day or two. The feed for each feeding should preferably be eaten within 3 minutes, either morning or evening, or in small quantities.
Change the water
Depending on the size of the tank and the filtration situation, it can be changed once a week, one-fifth to one-third of the water each time. The water that is transferred to the fish tank also needs to be cultured to remove the residual chlorine.
reproduction
Peacock fish can be three or four months old to produce small fish. About once a month can be born, the first child may have fewer births, and the stomach is not obvious. When the mother fish slowly matures, a litter may give birth to dozens or even more than a hundred fish. After the mother fish has laid the small fish, it is necessary to separate them to avoid the situation where the big fish eat the small fish.
Peacock fish are very suitable for novices both in terms of feeding difficulty # and ornamentality. And peacock fish are easy to breed and can give people a sense of accomplishment.
