Every year, 1 April, is International Bird Day. In this issue of Xiao Wang's family, The editor-in-chief of Na wants to talk to you about birds. I personally love birds, they are the most likely wildlife friends we can see in our daily lives! I've also had the good fortune to rescue a few birds.

In March this year, I occasionally go to the park after work in the evening, or when I get up early for morning exercise, enjoy the spring scenery, and photograph birds by the way, haha! I was surprised to find that in Xi'an Fengqing Park, there were more than a dozen kinds of birds living, including many national "three haves" animals and protected animals. The birds have different shapes, different habits, and each is beautiful. Today is Bird Love Day, let's take the bird population in Fengqing Park as an example, and get to know these elves who live around us!

"Order" is a concept in animal taxonomy, and "order" is "family" under it. In Xi'an Fengqing Park, I found five or six different kinds of birds, of which the birds belonging to the order Finches are the most, covering 9 different "families", next, let's get to know them one by one!

The little sparrow is the most common bird in our daily life! I especially like to watch "Sparrows Open", dozens of sparrows standing on a tree, the sound of twittering is not very moving, but it is really too interesting. Every spring and summer, if you pay attention to the places where there are many sparrows, you can often see the scene of the sparrow parents feeding the sparrow babies! A baby who has just been able to fly and cannot take the initiative to eat on his own will flap his wings, open his mouth, and follow his parents. The parent bird comes to feed it from time to time, and takes it to "jump up and down", indirectly exercising the baby's flying skills.

To be honest, maybe because sparrows are too common, I took less, look at my recent photos, more beautiful sparrow photos are really not much, haha! I found a picture taken in Fengqing Park last summer, a small sparrow hiding under a lotus leaf ready to drink water, which was fun!

I also like this one, which I took in the kuyu neighborhood in early February this year. Three little sparrows together, the posture is still very similar, as if "sparrow sugar gourd"! I personally think that although the sparrow is ordinary, if you look closely, it is also very beautiful!

Grey Magpie

The gray magpie has a black head, a body color of gray, and a gray-blue tail and wings. I remember when I was a child, the environment in the city was not as good as it is now, and there were not many birds to see. Among the few birds I knew at the time, the grey magpie was the absolute "face value". It looks really pretty!

Grey magpies that love pine caterpillars are particularly fond of pine trees. A pine forest near the east gate of Fengqing Park is a dense activity area for gray magpies in the park. The grey magpie's loud voice is very recognizable, and it can be seen in many colleges and universities, parks and green belts in Xi'an.

Grey magpies are typical social birds. In the park, we can often see seven or eight, or even a dozen gray magpies, foraging and playing together. If you happen to encounter them "communicating", or sounding the alarm, the sound, really noisy enough, haha! I have seen the information before, the gray magpie is rich in social behavior, strong social skills, and will help each other!

Red-billed blue magpie

Both the red-billed blue magpie and the grey magpie belong to the crow family, which is larger than the gray magpie, with a red mouth, black around the eyes, a gray patch on the top of the head, and a gray and blue body. The most striking thing about the red-billed blue finch is its long tail, which is very beautiful. The red-billed blue magpie picture above was photographed one morning in Fengqing Park, when there were about five or six red-billed blue magpies moving in the bamboo forest, and two of them also went to the pond to drink water.

As I said earlier in my introduction to the Grey Magpie, among the few birds I knew when I was a child, the Grey Magpie was the face value bearer. However, at that time, I did not know the red-billed blue magpie, and since I knew it, it has become the most beautiful "crow family" I have ever seen! I feel that when I was a child, I rarely saw red-billed blue magpies in the city, but occasionally I could see them in the suburbs or into Qinling. Nowadays, more and more red-billed blue magpies have also chosen to settle in Xi'an! The picture above was not actually taken in Fengqing Park, but near Kuyu, and it was filmed in winter. I especially like this one, and I put it here to share it!

As I said earlier, the most beautiful thing about the red-billed blue magpie is its long tail. Unfortunately, the above two pictures are facing us with their backs facing us, which does not reflect the black and white pattern on the front of its tail. In the photo I took earlier, I found a flying red-billed blue magpie, and now you can see its tail! I checked the information and learned that on some coffins and murals in the Tang Dynasty, there was a kind of "long-tailed bird", which was speculated to be a red-billed blue magpie!

Bald Eagle

Bald Eagle bēi, also known as Bald Eagle. Like the red-billed blue magpie, in the early years, it was not a particularly common bird in Xi'an. Studies have shown that the white-headed grebe came to live on the northern slope of Qinling In recent years and became a resident bird in Xi'an.

In addition to insects, I have observed in Fengqing Park in recent days that they will eat neem, fairy fruit, young shoots, petals and other foods. White-headed grebes are also social animals, and in the spring, we often see a group of bald-headed quails eating in trees while "communicating", and their "songs" are quite moving!

The picture above is the scene I photographed of the bald eagle going to the creek to drink water. I think I still have a good relationship with the bald eagle. One day at the end of July 2017, when I was home from heavy rain in Xi'an and working overtime at night, I found a bald-headed quail bird downstairs in the company, worried that it was eaten by a nearby wildcat, so I had to take it home first, and then take it back to the company at six o'clock the next day. I put it on a nearby tree, and it kept calling, and after a few minutes, its mother found it! And feed it! It was amazing, I was so touched that day!

The bald eagle cub I rescued

On January 29 this year, I picked up a bald quail downstairs from my grandmother's house. At that time, it was not in good shape, had no spirit, may have eaten bad things, and was still thin. I took it home, fed it some water, and shined it with an electric heater for a while, and it finally recovered, and then I took it to the vicinity of the discovery and released it, and recorded the moment it flew away. I was so happy at that moment! My family is happy to hear that it survived!

Grey starling

The grey starling liáng bird has a distinctive orange-red beak and orange-yellow claws, and it is particularly fond of eating the fruits of neem trees, also known as "neem myna".

On the side of the curved water platform on the west side of Jinhu in Fengqing Park, there are several neem trees, and recently there are fruits hanging on them. If you observe there, you can often see flocks of gray starlings coming to eat fruit and fruit! Enjoy the meal with the grey starlings, as well as the bald-headed grebe and the grey magpie. By the way, sometimes the gray starlings will also go to the west gate of Fengqing Park, and eat on the neem trees on both sides of Fengdeng Road.

The grey starling is more lively, often jumping up and down in the trees, but occasionally "moving off the ground". The picture above was captured by me, it was playing in the bauhinia tree, heard the shouts of its partner, and suddenly flew away!

The crow is a bird that Na editor personally likes very much, don't look at it black, its appearance is not proud, but its call is very beautiful! The squid is slightly larger than the grey starling and much smaller than the crow. If you touch it, don't think of this little cute as a crow! Remember, the mouth of the crow is not black, it is yellow. By the way, the squid is sweden's national bird!

Male crows are black in adult birds, while females are brownish in body. Recently, it is the breeding season of the crow, and in the park, we can often see the scene of the parents of the crow catching earthworms on the lawn and then flying to the trees to feed the chicks. I think the crow walking is particularly interesting, it stands when the head is up, very spirited, once "walking", will tilt the head forward, the body rushes forward, the speed is very fast, you can imagine the goose running forward, haha! Once they find a target spot for earthworms, they peck at the ground with their pointed mouths until they catch prey such as small earthworms. I photographed a female crow above, and when I was shooting, she picked up some branches and leaves, and repaired the nest on the trunk.

The babies in the crow's nest I've been observing so far are still relatively small, so here's a picture of a small crow that I photographed in Ring City Park last year. It doesn't look much like Mom and Dad, it's hairy, and it has a motile pattern on the chest, isn't it cute?

Red-headed long-tailed

The little cute bird in the picture above is called the red-headed long-tailed and is the smallest known bird in China. Maybe you have questions, shouldn't the smallest bird be hummingbirds? In fact, there is no wild hummingbird distribution in China, the smallest is this one, in Fengqing Park can see the red-headed long-tailed Oh!

The red-headed long-tailed has a chestnut-red crown, black around the eyes, and a white body from the throat to the chest, with a black feather in the middle, which is very obvious. How small is it? Total length 9 to 12 cm. You know, this includes the length of the tail, and its long tail accounts for almost half of the total length of the body.

The red-headed long-tailed is not only small in size, but also small in its call, and it is not easy to find it in the park. In addition, this little guy moves extremely fast, and with the kung fu of your blinking eyes, it may have flown out a long way. Therefore, if you want to observe such birds, you must maintain good eyesight, haha! If you want to photograph it, you must be quick! I took pictures in the park for several days, and only the bird in the photo above was closest to me, when I was on a bridge, and it had been moving on the wisteria on both sides of the bridge. My camera crept up on it, and it seemed to be playing hide-and-seek with me, dodging all the time, and finally giving me a lot of face, stopping at the vines.

Around the spring equinox, the purple leaf plums in the park are still blooming with small flowers, and the red-headed long-tailed like to move on the purple leaf plums. Don't you say, the maroon on its body is a bit similar to the color of the surrounding leaves, as if they are all integrated! By the way, I also observed that some red-headed long-tailed have feathers in their mouths that they don't know where they got, which means that they have to clean up the house and prepare to give birth to small lives! When I looked at the data before, someone observed and recorded the brooding behavior of the red-headed long-tailed, and in less than thirteen hours from morning to night, they actually fed the baby three hundred times, which is really a hard-working parent. I don't know why, seeing this number, and then thinking about their smaller bodies, my heart is particularly moved, it is really a great life.

<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" data-track="266" > Finches in the family Willow Warbler</h1>

Yellow-rumped willow warbler

The yellow-rumped willow warbler is also petite, only slightly larger than the red-headed long-tailed. It has two yellow wing spots on its wings and a yellow waist, which is a distinctive feature of it.

To be honest, the yellow-rumped willow warbler is so hard to shoot, I personally think it's harder to shoot than the red-headed long-tailed. One is because it is agile, lively and active, and there is almost no time to stop. The second is because it is always active in tall trees. As its name is "Willow Warbler", it is a small bird that likes to move high in willow trees, in addition, I have seen it on tall pine trees, unfortunately, it is always high, with its ass facing the camera, haha!

The song of the yellow-waisted willow warbler is very good and more gentle. The picture above is what I captured, and it was singing. If you go to the lake road north of Jinhu in Fengqing Park at seven or eight o'clock in the morning, or when the rain has just stopped, you can often hear the singing of yellow-waisted willow warblers playing in the willow trees.

The white-cheeked grebe resembles the size of the thrush and belongs to the family Oflordia. The white-cheeked Murray has a tan plumage, white around the eyes and cheeks, and brownish-black lines on one side of the eyes that extend to the back of the head. White-cheeked Grebes like to act collectively and are relatively bold. Sometimes I walk on the path in the park, and they feed under the bushes on both sides of the road, leisurely, and as long as I don't intentionally approach, they won't fly away.

I especially like this set of photos I took, which is a pair of white-cheeked noisy birds in love. At that time, they were on the ginkgo tree next to the fitness equipment area in the park, the "little couple" were close together, and the male also combed the hair around the eyes of the female, which was very warm.

It's recently the breeding season for the birds, and in the park, we can also see white-cheeked harriers picking branches and preparing to "take home" their nests.

The white-cheeked bird is a noisy bird that loves to bark and has a noisy voice. But I like it because I think it's cute. You see its frontal photo, the two eyes are very close, with white cheeks, feel the face is very narrow, if the crown feathers on the head stand up again, like a little to the eye, it is quite cute and cute, hahaha!

Red-billed acacia bird

The bird in the picture above, which feeds with the white-cheeked noisy harrier and has a yellow to orange-red "gradient" on its chest, calls the red-billed acacia bird. One morning, I was walking on a path through a bamboo forest in Fengqing Park when I suddenly noticed that there were several birds flying in front of me. One of them paused slightly in the tree, and I fixed my eyes on it, and it was a red-billed acacia bird. Unfortunately, it was so fast that I didn't have time to take pictures, and I went to the area several times to look for it, but I never found it again. So here, I had to put up the photos of the red-billed acacia bird I took before for everyone to identify. In previous years, the red-billed acacia bird was a common "caged bird" in the flower bird market, and many people caught this small bird for economic benefits, and the wild population of the red-billed acacia bird gradually declined. However, in the revised List of Wild Animals under National Key Protection in 2020, it has been upgraded to a national second-level protected animal. I heard from the "photographer" I met later that the red-billed acacia bird in Fengqing Park was released by someone. I'm not sure the accuracy of the message, but I wish such a beautiful bird, the number of wild populations, could increase a little!

Northern Red-tailed Plover

The northern red-tailed plover Qú is very different from male to female, the male has a gray-white area on the top of the head, the face, throat and back are black, the wings have a triangular white wing spot, the thorax, abdomen, and tail are orange, and the tail has a black in the middle.

The similarity between females and males is that they both have triangular white wing spots on their wings and orange tails, which I feel are darker in color than males. The female Northern Red-tailed Plover has neither a "gray-white head" nor a "large black back", and the main color of its body is grayish-brown, with a lighter color.

The Northern Red-tailed Plover's voice is sharp and rhythmic, and I usually follow the sound to find it. I still remember that the first time I met the Northern Red TailEd Plover was when I was in college, when I was on the first floor of the teaching building in area E of the Chang'an Campus of Xi'an Outer Chinese University, I heard a bird call that I had not paid attention to before, looked for a sound, looked for a long time, and finally found a pair of North Red Tails, haha, the first time I saw it, I liked this beautiful bird.

Recently, when shooting in the park, I always encountered the male northern red-tailed plover in the same bush forest area, and I felt that this little bird had a strong sense of territory. One day a blue-fronted red-tailed plover came and foraged in the bush, but the Northern Red-tailed Plover was reluctant and kept coming to drive the people away. In comparison, I found that the location of the female northern red-tailed plover seems to be more, but unfortunately their guts are too small, they can only shoot at a distance, and if they get a little closer, they will fly away immediately, so they are all long-range.

Blue-fronted red-tailed plover

As I mentioned above, the Northern Red-tailed Plover has a strong sense of territory and always drives to the same bush to forage for the blue-fronted Red-tailed Plover. What we see now is the blue-fronted red-tailed plover! At first glance, it bears some resemblance to the Northern Red-tailed Plover. However, its head and back are blue, there is no gray-white top of the head, and there are no white spots on the wings.

The plumage of the male blue-fronted red-tailed plover and the female blue-fronted red-tailed plover are also different. The female resembles the female of the Northern Red-tailed Plover , but does not have white wing spots on its wings. Unfortunately, the few times I took pictures in Fengqing Park, I did not take pictures of female birds, and males only took this one, and I can only share other photos later!

During the non-breeding season, the back of the male blue-fronted red-tailed plover will grow brown feathers, as is evident in the above photo. By the time of the breeding season, the head and upper back of the blue-fronted red-tailed plover will turn pure blue, which is very bright!

Red-winged blue-tailed plover

Pictured above is a female of a red-winged blue-tailed plover. The part of the man's armpit to the ribs is called the "flank", and the "flank" of the bird is almost where its wings are folded, and if we think of the wings as the arms of the bird, then this part is like its "arm socket". The red-tailed blue-tailed plover, as the name suggests, is orange-red on the flank of this bird, that is, the underside of its wings, while its tail is blue. From the above figure, we can clearly see it.

Like the Northern Red-tailed Plover and the Blue-fronted Red-tailed Plover, the Red-winged Blue-tailed Plover is more colorful in males than females. Unfortunately, I haven't photographed a male with a blue background these days. Even the female, who has only seen it once or twice, is always active in the bushes or dense forests, has less courage, hears a little noise, and immediately flies away!

Bead-necked dove

The bead-necked dove is a relatively common bird in our daily life, I wonder if you usually pay attention to it? Its body lines are beautiful, a bit like a pigeon. Some people think of it as a "wild pigeon", which is actually not true.

The bead-necked dove gets its name from the feathers on its neck, which are black on the background and have dense white dots on it, like pearls. When I searched for "bead-necked dove" in Baidu pictures before, I was actually prompted that the photo may cause discomfort, whether to continue to check. Haha, probably some people will be afraid of the white spots on its neck, resulting in dense phobia!

The "black and white pearl dot collar" of the bead-necked dove does not surround the whole neck, and its throat is similar to the color of the abdominal coat, and there is no black and white pattern. The cries of the bead-necked dove are very recognizable, usually three to four, and two urgent when courting.

The bead-necked dove is usually "monogamous", with both parties sharing the family task of raising young birds. In the park, I can often see a pair of bead-necked doves foraging and moving together. In recent years, on self-media platforms such as Douyin, I have seen videos of bead-necked doves building nests in residential buildings and nurturing the next generation. On the balcony of my grandmother's house, there are often bead-necked doves to bask in the sun, and I have always fantasized about when the bead-necked doves can come to my house to make a nest!

<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" data-track="266" > woodpecker family</h1>

Woodpeckers are known as "forest doctors", and I estimate that even if you see few birds, you know them basically. The woodpecker pictured above has a large white patch on its wings, known as the Large Spotted Woodpecker. When I was shooting, it was working "tuk tuk".

The big spotted woodpecker I met was a female. The male-female distinction is that the male has red feathers on the occipital part (i.e., the back of the head) and the female does not. Personally, I think it is still very rare to encounter woodpeckers in Fengqing Park. I went for so many days and photographed this one. However, I have seen woodpeckers in Xi'an Revolution Park, Changle Park, and Xi'an Forest of Steles before, so I will pay more attention to it in the future.

Little hoo

Personally, I feel that pì (pì) is currently the most common water bird in the main urban area of Xi'an. Just this past winter, every time the editor-in-chief passed through the South Gate, the Suzaku Gate, and the Hanguang Gate, he could almost see xiao Xiaoyi.

The corners of her mouth are a little yellow, and she looks stupid, but it's cute. They like to live in groups, often three or five "swim" on the surface of the water, occasionally diving into the water, catching small fish to eat. The little man's guts are smaller, and if he feels that the people on the shore are too close to him, he will swim away quickly. It swims fast, but it's fast!

One day, I went to the park at almost 7 o'clock in the afternoon, when the sunset was sprinkled on the golden lake in Fengqing Park, and the water surface shone with golden light. There are a few small squirrels that just happen to be passing through the light and shadow, and the picture is very beautiful. If you are in a good mood, it is also a very interesting experience to go to Fengqing Park to watch the sunset and see water birds! After a while, you can also enjoy the lotus flowers!

<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" data-track="266" > Dharma monk kingfisher family</h1>

When I was talking to the "photographers" who also took pictures in Fengqing Park, I learned that last year, someone took a lot of photos of kingfishers in Fengqing Park. I haven't encountered kingfishers in recent times, but I do remember seeing them in Fengqing Park. Therefore, the editor-in-chief of Na also shared the photos of the kingfisher in this article for everyone to identify.

Editor-in-chief Na remembers that when I was in elementary school, there was a text called "Kingfisher", and I heard that there is still this article in the primary school language book taught by people. The color of the kingfisher is really beautiful, but it is its feathers that bring it the "disaster of death". There is a traditional jewelry making process in China, called Diancui, and the main material used is the feathers of kingfishers, which is very cruel. Fortunately, it is now illegal to hunt and buy and sell kingfishers. The material in the modern dotting process has also been changed to dyed poultry feathers, or silky materials.

Personally, I feel that when I was young, I didn't see kingfishers much, but in recent years, the odds of seeing kingfishers in Xi'an have greatly improved. I remember seeing it last summer by the moat, and it was a couple. They were busy preying and feeding the young birds. Kingfishers are fast and small, not very easy to spot. But if you can find it, it's not very difficult to take pictures. Because it will stay on the shore for a while, observing the small fish in the river. Pick up the camera at this time, and you will definitely get a satisfactory photo.

In addition, spring is coming, and I often see small swallows in Fengqing Park. They're flying so fast! I don't feel like I've stopped, so I haven't taken a picture yet, so I won't share it here!

<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" data-track="266" > these... I didn't see it in Fengqing Park</h1>

The next few birds, I have seen in other parks in Xi'an, or other areas on the outskirts of Xi'an, but I haven't photographed them in Fengqing Park yet. I'm not sure if there really isn't one in Fengqing Park, so let's list them first! The next time you go to the park, you can pay attention to observation.

Black-tailed wax-billed finch

Compared to other small birds, the black-tailed wax-billed finch has a thicker mouth and looks cute. The black-tailed wax-billed finch is very intelligent and loves group life. I remember seeing a group of black-tailed wax-billed finches in Xi'an Revolution Park. One day in October 2019, I was listening to a lecture at Northwestern University's old campus, and after the lecture, I found a wax-billed finch standing motionless on the side of the road, and on closer inspection, it seemed that one eye had been injured. Later, I contacted the teacher of the animal protection station and asked me to send it to the Bird Forest in Xingqing Park.

Yellow-rumped grebe

The yellow-rumped grebe resembles the bald-headed grebe. However, they have no white feathers on their heads, which are basically black from the top of their heads to the eye area, and have white hairs on their throats, and their wings are gray-brown, without the green coat color on the wings of white-headed plovers. The most special thing about the yellow-rumped grebe is its butt, which has a brightly colored yellow hair.

I especially like this photo of the yellow-rumped quail that I took in Qinling before, and you can see its sides more clearly. Recently, every time I went to Fengqing Park, I would pay close attention to see if I could find the yellow-rumped quail, but I really never found it. If you go to other parks, you can look for them.

Have you ever seen this beautiful little bird before? Because of its long, pointed beak ( beak ) , many people mistake it for a woodpecker. In fact, it is not related to woodpeckers, it belongs to the hornbill family Daishinaceae. When Dai Sheng was frightened or excited, the crown of feathers on the top of his head would stand up, very beautiful, like wearing a small crown.

There are also some birds, which we are more common around the city, but can only be encountered in parks in the city, such as the magpie, the collared bird, the white wagtail and so on. When you play in the park in the future, you can also pay attention to it!

The bird above is a wren, and its wild population is very small in China, and they can only be seen in parts of Yunnan, Guangxi and Hainan. The above picture is obviously artificially released, but unfortunately, it is very likely that it cannot adapt to the climate environment of Xi'an, and finally there is only one dead end. I went to Fengqing Park for several days in a row, and two of them found it, but I didn't notice it for the next few days, and I don't know how it is now. In the past, many people liked to raise a wren and train it to speak. However, in 2020, the wren, like the red-billed acacia bird, has been listed as a national second-level protected animal. Therefore, it is now illegal to hunt, sell and raise wrens!

The birds I recently observed in Xi'an Fengqing Park, as well as other parks in Xi'an, but at present I have not found birds in Fengqing Park, all of which are introduced to you!
