Chengdu nationality, post-80s! He was selected into the periodic table of young chemists around the world as the spokesperson for "neptunium"

How do scientists celebrate their anniversaries as they walk out of the lab?

singing and dancing? Open? Neither!

Many people may not know that this year coincides with the 150th anniversary of the birth of the periodic table of chemical elements! And this year is also the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the world's most authoritative chemical academic organization, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) !

Chengdu nationality, post-80s! He was selected into the periodic table of young chemists around the world as the spokesperson for "neptunium"

Periodic table of young chemists

On the occasion of the double happiness, IUPAC and the International Network of Young Chemists (IYCN) decided to celebrate in a special way! 118 outstanding chemical scientists were selected worldwide to endorse the chemical elements on the periodic table of chemical elements... They are all "elemental spokespeople".

I am quite proud that one of these 118 scientists is a native of Chengdu, named Hou Xu!

"Hydrogen helium lithium beryllium boron, carbon nitrogen oxygen fluoro neon, sodium magnesium aluminum silicon phosphorus ...", even if the old knowledge learned before is not used for a long time, suddenly back out or catchy. Guess what kind of element Hou Xu is endorsing?

The answer may just happen to be something you haven't memorized, element 100 , "fermium "fm"!

Selected scientist

It represents the development direction of international chemistry disciplines in the next century

The year 2019 is the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements approved by the United Nations. Red Star News reporters learned from the official website of the Chinese Chemical Society that in May 2018, during the 31st annual conference of the Chinese Chemical Society, a press conference was held on the "IUPAC Centennial and International Periodic Table Year of Chemical Elements".

Academician Zhou Qifeng, who was the president of Peking University at that time, was already the chairman of IUPAC, and he introduced in detail the relevant situation of the "IUPAC Centenary and the International Periodic Table Year of Chemical Elements" at that press conference, and said that in 2019, it will lead and successively carry out activities such as "Young Chemists Periodic Table", "Chemical Periodic Table Competition" and so on.

Among them, the "Periodic Table of Young Chemists" activity is to collect nominations for young chemists from all over the world from July 2018 to July 2019, and through monthly selection, publish and form a "Periodic Table of Young Chemists".

The inductees must not only have achievements in the field of chemistry, but must not be more than 40 years old. More importantly, the inductees will represent the direction of the chemical discipline in the next century.

This young scientist in Chengdu

He is now a professor at Xiamen University

The reporter saw the "Periodic Table of Young Chemists" that has been fully publicized on the official website of "IUPAC". Click on the 100th element "Fm" and pop up the introduction of its element spokesperson Hou Xu.

The introduction of Hou Xu on the official website of IUPAC

Hou Xu, now a professor at Xiamen University, was born in 1983 and is a native of Chengdu. He graduated from Sichuan University with a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering and obtained a doctorate degree in physical chemistry from the National Nanoscience Center in 2011.

In 2012, Hou Xu was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, and after returning to China in 2015, he entered Xiamen University to start independent research.

According to the official website of "IUPAC", Hou Xu's bionic multi-scale pore material related research has brought a new chemical design concept to the fields of biological sensing and chemical detection.

According to the official micro of Xiamen University, Hou Xu is currently a double-employed professor and doctoral supervisor in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and the School of Physical Science and Technology of Xiamen University. His research involves interface science, polymer materials, bionic intelligent channel systems and other fields, and his papers have been published in international top academic journals such as Nature. Not only that, Hou Xu has been selected as the future leader in the field of chemistry in sciFinder of the American Chemical Society; he has also won the Postdoctoral Career Development Award of Harvard University and the National Postdoctoral Travel Award of the United States, as well as the National Lu Jiaxi Outstanding Graduate Student Award and the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. ”

So, what is "Fm"?

"Fermium" is an artificial radioactive metal element named in honor of Nobel laureate nuclear physicist Enrico Fermi, whose chemical properties are similar to rare earth elements, and in aqueous solutions, the main oxidation state is +3.

The reporter learned that this year, the Chinese Chemical Society also selected a "periodic table of elements of young Chinese chemists", and Hou Xu was also selected, endorsing the No. 33 element "arsenic (As)".
