DOTA 20th Anniversary Special: Those Easter Eggs of Pop Culture
Pop culture easter eggs and stems in DOTA2
01 Clockwork Technician and Terminator
The line about the clockwork technician in the previous issue pays tribute to the movie Blade Runner, in fact, in addition to the clockwork there is an easter egg, when he is killed in the river (note that it must be in the river), the body slowly sinks, the right hand will be raised and then do a thumbs up motion, until it disappears completely. (I had tested this before, but because it was not in the river, the Easter egg did not come out, thanks to the reminder of @Immortal Shield classmates)
As many people may have guessed, this shot is actually a tribute to the classic shot of the American movie Terminator 2: Judgment Day when T-800 chose to sacrifice itself in order to completely destroy the possibility of terminators existence.
02 Loggers and Raiders of the Lost Ark
The hero lumberjack often says some funny lines, one of which is "Trees?" Why did it have to be trees?" Why does it have to be a tree? This line pays homage to a scene from Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark.
In the film, Dr. Jones came to Egypt in order to find the legendary "Ark of Law", and after several twists and turns, he finally found the burial point of the Ark of Law, the "Well of Souls", but what he did not expect was that there were thousands of poisonous snakes inside. Dr. Jones was not afraid of anything, no obstacle could stop him, but he was particularly afraid of poisonous snakes. As the torch fell into the Well of Souls, Dr. Jones saw countless snakes writhing in the faint glow of the fire, and he sighed "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?” (Meaning: snake?) Why does it have to be a snake? )。
03 Little and The Hulk
The little one grows up as he level up, eventually becoming a giant made of stones, and he has a line called "Tiny Smash!" (Meaning: Tiny, Crush!) This line is actually a tribute to the popular character hulk in the Marvel Universe, because one of the Hulk's classic lines and skills is "Hulk Smash!". One thing to say, color aside, the two are still very similar in strength and body shape.
04 Tree Spirit Guardian and Lord of the Rings
The Tree Spirit Guardians, in terms of background story, appearance, and voice, pay great tribute to the king of the Ent tribe (i.e., the tree people) in the series of novels and movies "Lord of the Rings", the "Shepherd of the Hundred Trees", the lord of the Fagun Forest, the oldest life in Middle-earth since the century, the treebeard.
Isn't it like that? Don't look at these tree people slowly, but their fighting power is very strong, playing a key role in the battle of the Saruman fortress Eisinger.
05 Giant Tooth Seaman and video games
Giant Tooth Haimin is a very personal boxing master, when he uses his unique trick "Walrus God Fist", he will randomly say one of 82 lines, a game is played, it is difficult to hear the repetition. There's a phrase like "Falcon Punch!" (Meaning: Iron Eagle Divine Fist), a tribute to Captain Falcon in the video game Super Smash Bro, because his trick is "Falcon Punch".
The Walrus Divine Fist and the Iron Eagle Divine Fist of the Giant Tooth Seaman do have many similarities, they both hurt the explosion and will knock the enemy away, which perfectly interprets the saying: Who punches the first punch is often not important, but the last punch is seen.
Giant Tooth Haimin also has a line called "Double Dragon Punch Punch!", which is more obvious, paying tribute to the video game Double Dragon. (Played all the dads covered their faces)
06 Abyss Lords and Batman
At first glance, these two people seem to have nothing to do with each other, especially in terms of body shape, just kidding, in fact, the two still have something in common, such as both have dark colors, both have a deep voice, and have an enemy named "Bane". After killing Bane, the Abyss Lords will say "You have my permission to die." (Meaning: I'll allow you to die), this line is a direct quote from the American movie "The Dark Knight Rises.")
In the film, Batman is trapped by Bane's calculations, by which time Bane has actually taken control of Gotham City, but instead of rushing to kill Batman, he wants Batman to watch him destroy Gotham City, and he says to Batman, "We will destroy Gotham and then when it is done, and Gotham is ashes, then you have my permission to die." (Meaning: We will destroy Gotham City, and when it's all over, Gotham City will be reduced to ashes, I will allow you to die).)
07 Immortal Corpse King and Ghost Playman
When purchasing items, the Immortal Corpse King has a 5% chance of saying the line "Shop Smart", which is quoted from the American movie "Ghostbuster 3: Army of Darkness".
The male protagonist in the film, Ash, was originally a supermarket employee, and he would repeat the supermarket slogan "Shop Smart, shop S-Mart" (meaning: good quality, good price guarantee) many times a day. He later traveled to the Middle Ages because of the Book of Death, suffering from hardships and dangers, and later broke King Arthur's sword with a rifle.
"Dead" and resurrected, he began a three-sentence speech that did not leave the bank, introduced the long-barreled shotgun in his hand to the people around him who did not know the truth, the price of the material in the place of origin was a number of family treasures, and finally did not forget to repeat the supermarket slogan: Shop Smart, shop S-Mart. The "Ghost Playman" series of movies basically deals with demons and ghosts, which is very consistent with the temperament of the Immortal Corpse King.
Interestingly, there is actually a supermarket chain called Shop Smart, but their slogan is not the above sentence, but "So much for so little" (meaning: once and for all).
08 Sky Vault Watchmen and Cartoons
The Vault Watcher has a line that says, "You will just have to accept this, and move on." (Meaning: you just have to accept this and move on). The origin of this line is interesting, it comes from the animated series "The DOTA 2 Reporter", written by Wronchi (real name: Brian Calland).
Dota2 war correspondent content is all-encompassing, there are hero introduction, game mechanics, update analysis, fun stories, etc., whenever someone in the film questions the game mechanics, there will be heroes who say the line "You will just have to accept this, and move on", and later in order to pay tribute to the efforts of the author Wronchi, this line was included in DOTA2 by the V Society, used as the line of the Sky Dome Watcher, and later the author In order to pay tribute to the V Society, Wronchi asked the Sky Vault Watcher to say this line in the video... (Matryoshka dolls are prohibited!) )
Despite limited manpower, the Dota 2 Battlefield Reporter series is well-made, with smooth animations and funny voiceovers, with 72 updates since 2013 and more than 8 million views.
Unfortunately, after August 2, 2017, Wronchi never updated the video of this series, and in 2018 he released an issue of "Artifact Reporter", which was very well received, but eventually cooled with the coolness of Artifact. The author himself is now focused on developing an indie game, sometimes broadcasting live, and last year made a hearthstone video, well, adopted by Blizzard (not surprisingly), in short, no matter where it develops, I wish him all the best.
09 Blood Demons and The Apocalypse Now
At the beginning of the competition, Blood Devil has a line called "I love the smell of serum in the morning", which is a tribute to the American movie Apocalypse Now.
The bomber formation drops a huge amount of napalm, igniting a large forest, and then Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore Robert Duvall utters the super-classic line "I love the smell of napalm in the morning."
