Los Angeles, China News Service, March 18 (Reporter Zhang Shuo) After nearly 9 years, the box office has regained its five consecutive titles. The latest statistics show that "Black Panther" crowned the North American weekend box office charts for the fifth consecutive time, breaking the dusty record since 2009.
North American box office statistics website boxoffmojo.com released film market data on March 18, and 50 films reported about $132 million at the weekend box office, down 6% month-on-month.
The spring of the 2018 North American film market undoubtedly belongs to the superhero movie "Black Panther". Since its release on February 16, the film has been triumphant, dominating the North American box office charts for five consecutive weekends. In the past 19 years, only Marvel Studios and Disney have jointly created the action-adventure film "Black Panther", the 1999 Bowei Pictures horror film "The Sixth Sense", and the 2009 Fox science fiction adventure film "Avatar", which have won the North American weekend box office rankings for the fifth consecutive time.
This past weekend, "Black Panther" increased its North American box office by about $27.02 million, and although the screening theater line decreased slightly, the box office decline narrowed. At present, the film has accumulated $605 million in North America, not only becoming the seventh film in the history of American cinema to break the $600 million mark at the North American box office, but also topped the new box office overall title of the superhero film series. The film has grossed about $1.183 billion worldwide so far, and the North American and international tickets are almost equally divided.
In the "Black Panther" blockbuster movie jianghu, there are also several new faces emerging, joining hands to break into the top five of the latest North American box office charts.
The March 16 action-adventure film Tomb Raider finished second with $23.53 million. Adapted from the action-adventure computer game of the same name, the "Tomb Raider" series of movies, combining multiple eye-catching visual elements such as adventure, beauty, and action, was popular with fans after its debut in 2001, becoming one of the most successful game adaptations. Warner Bros. Company's new book "Tomb Raider: Battle of the Origins" invests $94 million to tell the story of the heroine's 118-minute journey into the dangerous and mysterious island tomb to bravely explore the mystery of her father's disappearance. Some moviegoers said that although the plot of this movie is slightly delayed, it generally "shows a blockbuster style", and Chinese film star Wu Yanzu has good acting skills in the film.
The family film "I Can Only Imagine," released on the same day as "Tomb Raider: Battle of origins," finished third on the list with $17.06 million, while "Love, Simon" came in fifth place with $11.5 million.
Under the impact of the new film, the last runner-up, the fantasy film "A Wrinkle in Time", dropped to the fourth place with a 50% decline of $16.57 million. The action comedy "Game Night", the family film "Peter Rabbit", the horror film "Strangers: Prey at Night", the thriller "Red Sparrow", and the action crime film "Death Wish" were ranked 6th to 10th in this issue.
This upcoming weekend, Universal's sci-fi action film Pacific Rim: Uprising, Paramount Pictures' animated Ginomio and Juliet 2: Sherlock Gnomes, and Open Road's feature film Midnight Sun will all be released on March 23. (End)
