The ranking of American films ended in 2007. Ranking is something I often post, and I have always emphasized a point of view: the quality and height of the film are different in everyone's view, and cannot be qualitatively measured by ranking. To some extent, the ranking may also be set as a reference for everyone's reference.
11th Place: City Lights
City Lights is a 1931 American romantic comedy film written and directed by Charlie Chaplin. The film tells the story of Chaplin's vagabond who falls in love with a blind flower seller and makes friends with a capricious alcoholic.
City Lights was an immediate success after its release on January 30, 1931, receiving positive reviews and $5 million at the box office. Today, film critics not only consider it the pinnacle of Chaplin's film career, but also one of the greatest films of all time. In 1992, the film was included in the List of Protected Films by the National Film Preservation Board under the National Film Registry for its "remarkable achievements in culture, history, and aesthetics." In 2007, the American Film Institute listed City Lights as the 11th greatest American film of all time on the AFI Top 100 Films of the Year.
In 1949, film critic James Aigie called the film's last scene "the greatest performance of all time."
12th Place: The Searcher
The Searcher is a film directed by American director John Ford, starring John Wayne, released in 1956, and although it was a commercial success at the time, it was not valued by the American film industry. The Searcher is now widely regarded as one of the greatest Westerns in the history of cinema.
Director Steven Spielberg has said that when he hit a bottleneck in filmmaking, the film was one of four must-see films that would return him to his original intentions (the other three being Frank Capra's "Man of the Storm", Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" and David Lane's "Lawrence of Arabia").
13th Place: Star Wars
Star Wars, renamed Star Wars Quadrilogy: A New Hope after 1981, is a 1977 American space opera epic written and directed by George Lucas, the first episode of the Star Wars series (the fourth in plot order). Starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Alec Guinness, the film was released on May 25, 1977, and has undergone several changes, re-releasing in 1979, 1981, 1982, 1997, 2000 and 2004. George Lucas once admitted that the film was based on the 1958 film "Warring States Heroes" directed by Akira Kurosawa.
The plot focuses on the Rebel Alliance' plans to destroy the Galactic Empire's space station, the Death Star, led by Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher). The plan disrupts the isolated life of farm worker Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), who inadvertently acquires a pair of robots with plans to steal the Death Star's construction. As the Empire begins its devastating search for the missing robot, Skywalker agrees to accompany Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) on his plan to return to the Death Star and join the Rebel Alliance in saving the galaxy from the Galactic Empire's tyranny.
14th Place: "Horror Story"
Horrors) is a 1960 American horror film directed by Hitchcock and starring Anthony Perkins, Jenny Lee, Vera Miles and John Gavin. Written and written by Joseph Stefano, Joseph Stefano adapted Robert Bullock's novel of the same name, inspired by the crimes of the Wisconsin killer and grave robber Ed Gein.
The film tells the story of a series of events that occur after Marianne Klein, a secretary who embezzles a huge amount of money from her boss and escapes to a remote motel, meets Norman Baez, a mentally ill hotel owner. The film was thought to have deviated from Hitchcock's previous work, North by Northwest, because it was black-and-white and had a low budget and used only the crew of the series. Horrors initially received mixed reviews, but its outstanding box office performance prompted critics to rethink it, eventually garnering overwhelming praise and 4 Oscar nominations, including Jenny Lee for Best Supporting Actress and Hitchcock for Best Director.
The film is now regarded as one of Hitchcock's best works and has been praised by film critics and scholars around the world as a masterpiece of cinematic art. It is regarded as one of the best films in film history, and has increased public acceptance of violence, sexuality, and abnormal behavior in film in the United States. After Hitchcock's death in 1980, Universal Began producing related works: three sequels, a remake, a tv movie and a TV series. In 1992, the film was included in the List of Protected Films by the National Film Preservation Board under the National Film Registry for its "remarkable achievements in culture, history, and aesthetics."
Fifteenth: 2001: A Space Odyssey
The best sci-fi film is unquestionable.
2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 American science fiction film directed by Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick was inspired by Arthur Clarke's short story "Outpost" and collaborated with Clark on the screenplay. Shortly after the film's release, Clark published the novel of the same name.
Despite mixed reviews when the film was released, the film received the highest box office in North America in 1968 and received four Academy Award nominations that year for Best Visual Effects. In 1991, the film was collected by the National Film Preservation Administration for "cultural, historical, and aesthetic importance."
16th Place: Sunset Strip
Sunset Strip is an American film noir produced in 1950. Named after the famous avenue of the same name that crosses Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, it was directed and written by Billy Wilder.
William Horton plays down-and-out screenwriter Joe Gillis, and Gloria Swanson plays former movie star Norma Desmond, who pulls Gillis into her daydream of returning to screen. Elie von Stallroheim, Nancy Olsen, Fred Clark, Lloyd Goff and Jack Webb play supporting roles. Director Cecil Demir and columnist Haida Hopper play themselves, and the video also includes important figures of the silent film era, Buster Keaton, H. Hopper, and other important figures of the silent film era. B. Warner, Anna M. Q. Nelson's exterior lens.
"Sunset Boulevard" was appreciated by many critics when it premiered, and it received 11 Oscar nominations and 3 Little Golden Man awards. It is widely regarded as a classic and is one of the most famous films in American cinema. The Library of Congress declared it "culturally, historically, and aesthetically important" in 1989. It was also selected as one of the first batch of videos to be saved by the National Video Registry. In the 2007 list of the Top 100 American Films of the 20th Century by the American Film Institute, Sunset Boulevard was ranked 16th.
17th Place: "Graduate"
The Graduate is a 1967 American comedy film based on a novel of the same name written by Charles Weber, directed by Mike Nichols.
Dustin Hoffman, who was 30 years old at the time, received an Oscar nomination for the film.
The film was voted one of the best 250 films in the Online Movie Database, ranked 9th in the 100 Comedies of the 100 Years by the American Film Institute and 17th among the AFI 100 Best Films of the 100 Years, and was also included in the "National Collection" of the Library of Congress.
18th Place: "The General"
The General is a silent film by American film director Buster Keaton, based on the Anzulu Assault, released in 1927. The General is widely regarded as one of the greatest films in history.
Set during the American Civil War, train driver Johnny Gray (Buster Keaton) has two favorites: his girlfriend Annabelle, and his little train, the General. When the war broke out, he wanted to join the army but was not expropriated, and could only continue to work as a train driver.
The Northern Coalition has hijacked the Southern train," the General, on which his girlfriend was. As the driver of the General, he eventually broke into the enemy line, recaptured the General and rescued his girlfriend, and lured the train "Texas" chasing them to a wooden bridge on the Rock River, causing it to fall into the river. This saved the Confederate Army, and he became a battlefield hero, eventually receiving an officer's commendation as a lieutenant.
19th Place: "The Docks"
"The Docks". is an American crime film released in 1954 that reflects the struggle between various forces in New York Harbor in the early 1950s. Directed by Ilya Kazan and starring Marlon Brando. The film is based on a series of articles "Crime on the Waterfront" published in the New York Sun from November to December 1948 by Malcolm Johnson.
He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Local Journalism in 1949. The film won 8 awards at the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Marlon Brando), Best Supporting Actress (Eva Marie Centr), Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing.
20th Place: "People of the Storm"
"The Man of the Year" should actually be "How Beautiful Life is", is a 1946 American film directed by Frank Capra and starring James Stewart, Donna Reid, and Leon Barrimo. The story is inspired by Charles Dickens's classic novel Stingy Fortune. "How Beautiful Life Is" has always been evaluated as an unparalleled warm and inspirational classic film. It enjoys a high reputation in English-speaking countries and other countries where Christmas is the main festival. In 2006, exactly 60 years after its release, the American Film Institute voted it the greatest inspirational film of its 100-year history
When the film was released in Hong Kong during the period when the two sides of the strait were not divided, the Chinese film was called "Mo Negative Young Head", but the surprising thing was that Shanghai was delayed in releasing. Later, some media misused the Chinese title of Frank Capra's other film "Meet John Doe" released in China (the film was only really named "The Man of the Wind" when it was released in China that year), so that the title of the film in some areas of Chinese the film has been misused as "The Man of the Wind".
