Children who are good at reading are more successful! Comprehensive analysis of the "2R" reading method in the United States

--- successful children love to read---

A child who is good at and willing to read is 5 times more likely to grow up to be "successful" than a child who is not good at reading.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) concluded that in the process of academic achievement, the love of reading outweighs social attributes. When children often read enthusiastically, usually just for pure reading pleasure, they will subtly master various information processing methods, making it easier to obtain information. The influence of reading also permeates other areas of learning, internalizing basic spelling, grammar, and vocabulary skills, and they are better at expressing themselves verbally and in writing.

Why encourage children to read?

Studies have shown that a three-year-old, if his parents read for him every day, his vocabulary is two months earlier than that of a child without parents reading, they see a variety of things and express their thoughts better. A 3-5-year-old child, if his parents take him to the library once a month, his vocabulary is two and a half months ahead of his peers.

I recently saw a set of data from Professor Richard Anderson, director of reading research at the University of Illinois in the United States, who deeply studied the extracurricular reading of Chinese children and read with children in the United States, and compared the two. This study shows that the economic ability of an ordinary Chinese family and an ordinary American family to provide reading materials for their children is roughly equal, but American children read 6 times as much as Chinese children!

What's wrong with our kids? How can I improve my reading ability?

--- American children benefit from scientifically clear graded reading---

After studying children's language development for several years, I found that the main reason why American children can maintain their advantage in reading for a long time is that American schools have a very mature reading system: graded reading.

Before officially starting reading education in schools, the United States will test children's reading level from kindergarten, which can not only allow parents to clearly understand children's reading level, but also allow teachers to understand where students' reading weaknesses are, mainly focusing on several aspects:

Accuracy Rate

Self-Correction Ratio (how many self-corrected mispronouncies)

Fluency Score (fluency in reading including feelings and intonation)

Reading Rate (Reading Speed Words Per Minute)

In addition, the Reading Education System in the United States also has a magic weapon, that is, to select the appropriate reading bibliography standard for children, which is more scientific and systematic, and there are five main general standards:

▪ Read the cover and the picture to see if you are interested?

▪ Are you interested in reading the contents extensively?

▪ Are most of the words recognized?

▪ Is it a type of article that you are familiar with?

▪ Can you summarize this book yourself?

There are also several simpler criteria for judging the cognition of words:

▪ 0-1 words you don't understand: This book is too simple

▪ 1-3 words you don't understand: This book is the perfect choice

▪ 4 words you don't understand: You can challenge it

▪ 5 words I don't understand: This book is too hard

In the early stage of children's reading ability test coupled with these book selection standards, graded reading in the United States made children's reading interest and level greatly improved. In addition to the early reading level test and the selection of suitable books in the middle stage, the most important reading method in the later stage is a kind of ability that American children must learn, and at the same time, the language expression after reading is also particularly important. Many American children have to be trained in correct reading methods and speeches from kindergarten, so that children can talk about their understanding and feelings after reading, and answer everyone's questions. In terms of training methods, American schools never require students to read and recite, but they will spend a lot of effort on reading aloud and fluently.

--- analyze the "2R" reading method of American children---

From kindergarten to school in the United States, almost all have their own unique reading teaching methods, of which the more famous is the graded reading method, Phonics fluent reading method, but today to introduce to you is the rabbit bit particularly respected "2R" (Reading Response) reading method, in the United States, after children read the book, guide children to more or less complete the "2R" thinking is almost a parent and teacher must do homework.

What is Reading Response Reading? As the name suggests, it is reading feedback, which is what we often call "reading after reading", but this "reading feeling" is not the kind of simple "reading after reading" essay in our school, but a very scientific reading method system, the United States from kindergartens to well-known universities like to use this method, enough to see the crushing effect of "2R". Today Rabbit Bit will give you a brief combing of the main five-stage methods of "2R" reading for children aged 3-10: elements, summary, feelings, reflection and expression.

1. Elements

Method: Parents and teachers in the United States will do some homework in advance before their children read, that is, formulate questions that need to be answered in the reader response, such as what is the general content of the story? Who are the protagonists of the story? What do these people do in the story? What are some of the most memorable episodes? ...... At first, you don't have to design too many and overly complex questions, simple and clear, but you need to have reading logic, such as "When did the story take place?" Where? Who is involved? How are things? "Let the child understand these questions before reading, so that they can think while reading." You can also answer questions by speaking, writing, and drawing after your child has finished reading.

Goal: Let your child learn to read extensively, focusing on some of the story elements (time, place, people, events) while familiarizing themselves with and accumulating common vocabulary.

▪ Do you like or dislike the story? Why?

Do you like this book/story? Why?

▪ Would you please retell the story?

Can you tell the story in your own words?

▪ Can you tell me about the characters in this story?

Can you tell us who the characters in the story are? / What did they do?

▪ Do you agree or disagree with the author?

Do you agree with the author?

▪ What,if anything, did you learn from the story?

Did you learn anything from this book/story?

Answer Reference:

▪ I think...

▪ I think...

▪ By... I understand......

▪ By... I learned...

2. Summary

method:

▪ Structural analysis first: what does each paragraph say? What is the reason for the matter? What happened in between? What happened? Is there anything special about it? Why do you think it's special?

▪ Refining the theme idea: What does this story tell us? Do you agree? What are the details that support your point of view? Guide your child to the story to find answers, for example, a dialogue that can show the protagonist's personality, remind you of a scene in your own life, or let you learn how to deal with the story of something.

Goal: Let children learn to analyze the structure of the story, pay attention to the details of the story, and learn to prove the argument with arguments. You can also let your child use his imagination and talk about different views from the author and why he thinks so.

Reference answers:

▪ I think this story tells such a truth...

▪ There is one plot in the story that is particularly interesting,......

▪ I've had similar things happen, like...

3. Feelings

Methods: Mainly cultivate children's cognitive ability, feeling ability and critical thinking ability. After reading with your child, you can interact at this stage, and some questions are appropriate, such as: Do you think this is a happy/sad/angry story? Why? Who do you like/hate a few of the protagonists? Why? Are there any episodes that make you feel uncomfortable, etc. In addition to expression, for younger children, they can also feedback their inner feelings through painting.

Objective: Guide children to correctly recognize the concept of things, vocabulary meaning, sentence patterns and sentence patterns, sensitively experience the emotions and thought changes of the characters in the story, and find arguments to prove their points.

▪ I think it's a sad story because...

▪ I love the story... Because he/she...

▪ That plot made me uncomfortable because...

4. Reflection

Method: This is a very important stage in reading, so that children learn to look at the story from a different perspective. For example: What would you do if you were the **** in the story? Do you think he did the right thing? Are there other ways to solve the problem? Is this necessarily the right thing to do? Wait a minute. The key lies in the guidance of parents and teachers, try to listen to your child's own views, but give clear reasons, not too much judgment, and only give guidance and correction when values are wrong.

Goal: Let children learn to look at problems from different angles, think critically after reading, learn to comb stories with careful logical thinking, and improve children's understanding and cognition of the truth.

5. Learn to express

Method: In fact, this stage is already hidden in the first four stages, and the process of expressing opinions is the process of children combing and thinking. For children aged 3-5, they can be guided through logical questions, such as: When did this story take place? Where does it happen? Who is the protagonist of the story? Who else are the supporting characters? What did they go through? How does the problem end up? Did they succeed? Wait a minute. For children aged 6-10, more logical and emotional questions can be added, or children can be listed on paper to answer. For example: What does each paragraph of this story say? What is the final truth? Do you like this story? Can you list 3 reasons to like it? Can you name 2 other ways to solve the problem? How do you think the story will unfold in the future? Wait a minute. It is possible to let children tell the development process of events in the story through mind mapping.

Goal: To let children express their views and attitudes in logical language, learn the ability to organize language, and develop the habit of thinking before expressing.

About the "2R" reading method, Rabbit Bit will first introduce it to you here today, if you want to know more about reading and language expression, welcome to pay attention to the public account "Family Culture language training camp", so that Chinese children can master efficient reading methods and have strong language skills.
