Wang Erxiao was born on January 22, 1929, and died on October 25, 1942, his real name is Yan Fuhua, pseudonym Wang Pu, a native of Laiyuan County, Baoding City, Hebei Province.

After Wang Erxiao's sacrifice, his heroic anti-Japanese deeds quickly spread throughout the Liberated Areas, and every fellow villager sang Erxiao's cattle herding with tears in his eyes, and the Jin-Cha-Ji Daily reported Wang Erxiao's heroic deeds on the front page. Fang Bing and Li Haofu, literary and artistic warriors in the Jin-Cha-Ji Border Region, were deeply moved by Wang Erxiao's story and soon created this famous children's song. In January 1989, the anti-Japanese hero "Wang Erxiao" was posthumously recognized as a martyr after 46 years of sacrifice.

On August 26, 2015, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television released the results of the online voting of "My Favorite Ten Anti-War Songs", and "Singing Two Little Cowherds" was one of the 10 songs selected.
