According to The Hollywood Reporter, Canada's National Oscar Selection Committee announced at a press conference in Montreal on Monday (September 25) that the historical feature film "Hochelaga, Land of Souls" will be selected to compete for the 90th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

The film was directed by François Gillard (The Red Violin, The Boys' Choir) and starred Raoul Max Trujillo, Tanaya Beatty, David La Haye, and others. It tells the story of archaeologist Antoine Morin who discovered the mysterious ruins of the 16th-century village of Hoklaga after a natural disaster accident at percy Walmorson Stadium, and joined hands with history student Baptiste Asigny to embark on an expedition to excavate the monuments.
In recent years, Canadian films have been nominated for academy awards such as Dennis Villeneuve's Incendies, Philip Farado's Monsieur Lazhar, NguyenKin's Rebelle, and Agneska Holland's In Darkness.
Canada's most recent Oscar winner was Dennis Aconte's Les invasions barbares, which won Best Foreign Language Film at the 76th Academy Awards in 2004.
