The fable of Mr. Dongguo and the wolf is a household name in China. This story is from the Dongtian Anthology, written by a ming dynasty man named Ma Zhongxi.
It is about the Spring and Autumn Period, and there is an inker named Mr. Dongguo.
The Mo family advocates "simultaneous love", believing that a person's benevolence should have no difference in rank, nor should it distinguish between thick and thin relatives. In other words, all things in heaven and earth should be treated equally.
There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with that, right? Anyway, Mr. Dong Guo was very convinced.
On this day, Mr. Dongguo led a lame donkey, and on the back of the donkey was a pocket with some books in it, preparing to seek an official and a half-job in Zhongshan.
Who knew that at this moment, a wolf suddenly came running, and there was an arrow wound on its back.
It turned out that Zhao Jianzi, the grand master of the Jin Dynasty, had come to Zhongshan to hunt. This wolf's arrow wound was shot by Zhao Jianzi, but it did not shoot dead, so it ran away. At this time, Zhao Jianzi was chasing this wolf.
When the wolf saw Mr. Dongguo, he spat out his words and offered to hide in his pocket.
Mr. Dong Guo is a firm believer, of course, to treat everyone equally. Only two or three times in a row, because I was afraid of touching the wolf's chin and pressing the wolf's tail, but I still didn't fit in.
Seeing that Zhao Jianzi was about to chase, the wolf simply curled up his head and limbs like a hedgehog, and let Mr. Dongguo quickly tie it up, stuff it into his pocket, and put it on the back of the donkey.
Not long after packing up, Zhao Jianzi drove the carriage and chased after him with the eagle dog.
Because there was no trace of the wolf at once, Zhao Jianzi asked Mr. Dong Guo. Who knew that although this Mr. Dongguo was benevolent and kind, he could tell a lie, and he didn't even blink his eyelids, and he sent Zhao Jianzi away in a few words.
Zhao Jianzi walked far away, and the sound of the carriage could no longer be heard, so the wolf begged Mr. Dongguo in his pocket to release himself. So Mr. Dongguo opened his pocket, untied the rope, and released the wolf.
Who knew that the wolf had just escaped from danger and gained freedom, so he said that he was so hungry that he would die if he could not eat. So on a whim, he actually proposed to eat Mr. Dongguo, and said without shame:
"Sir, if you are an inker, you can put your heels on the top of your head, and you think about the world, so why should you be stingy with me and have no life?"
Translated, it means: Since The gentleman is an inker, he runs around all day regardless of hard work, doesn't he want to make a little contribution to the beings of the world? I don't think I'll be stingy enough to let me eat you, and then save my little life!
As the wolf said this, he pounced on Mr. Dong Guo.
When Mr. Dongguo saw the situation, he hurriedly resisted while hiding around the donkey, and scolded the wolf for being ungrateful in his mouth. However, the wolf did not think so, and still kept chasing.
In this way, Mr. Dongguo hid around the donkey one by one, and the wolf chased around the donkey vigorously.
Later, when Mr. Dongguo and the wolf were tired, Mr. Dongguo suggested that it would be better for the two of us to go to three old men and ask, if they said I should let you eat, then you would eat me; if they said they should not eat, then you would give up.
The wolf thought about it, it was not a matter of chasing him like this, so he agreed.
I didn't want to look for it, let alone the old man, not even a personal shadow. The wolf was impatient, so he forced Mr. Dongguo to ask about an old almond tree.
The old apricot tree spat out that when the old farmer planted himself, he only used an apricot core. But for more than 20 years, he has blossomed and borne fruit every year, not only the old farmers eat themselves, the wives and children eat themselves, the guests and servants also eat themselves, and they also take them to the market to sell. Now that he is old, he cannot blossom and bear fruit, and the old farmer actually wants to cut himself down and sell it to the carpenter for money.
Therefore, the old apricot tree felt that Mr. Dongguo's kindness to the wolf was nothing at all, and should be eaten by the wolf.
Of course, Mr. Dongguo was not convinced after hearing this, so he went to ask the old cow. Who knows the opinion of the old cow, even like the old almond tree, thinks that Mr. Dongguo should be eaten by the wolf.
The wolf heard the old almond tree and the old cow say this, and immediately opened his teeth and claws, and he was about to pounce on it to eat Mr. Dongguo.
Just then, an old man came. Mr. Dongguo saw it, rushed over to ask for help, and told the cause and effect again. Who knew that the wolf was cunning, and slandered Mr. Dongguo for putting it in his pocket because he sincerely wanted to choke it to death.
In this way, a man and a wolf, arguing and arguing have no result.
So the old man proposed that he simply re-demonstrate it, so that he could judge who was right and who was wrong. Mr. Dongguo and the wolf listened, and they had no opinion, so the wolf curled up again, was tied up by Mr. Dongguo, and stuffed into his pocket.
At this time, the old man hinted at Mr. Dongguo and took out a dagger to kill the wolf.
When Mr. Dongguo saw it, he was still hesitating, thinking that this practice was too unkind. The old man listened to mr. Dongguo scolding him, saying that he was "benevolent in stupidity" and that benevolence was talking to the point of stupidity.
So he personally reached out and helped Mr. Dongguo kill the wolf.
This is the complete, Mr. Dongguo and the wolf story. For a long time, people have been laughing at people like "Mr. Dongguo", who are full of compassion and do not distinguish between right and wrong.
Why?
It is because although Mr. Dongguo talks about "both love" and talks about equal treatment, he does not understand what is "benevolence" in the end.
When you look at this "benevolence" word, there is a two next to a person' character, which means that between people, it is possible to talk about benevolence and unkindness. In other words, "benevolence" actually has a category, at least between the same kind.
This is why the old almond tree and the old cow think that there is nothing wrong with the wolf eating Mr. Dongguo.
