During the Three Kingdoms period at the end of the Han Dynasty, Lü Bu's Hezhou Corps was a highly effective military force. Among the many military generals under Lü Bu's account, Gao Shun was undoubtedly the most well-known. According to the Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms Lü Bu:
Shun is innocent and majestic, does not drink alcohol, and is not fed. The more than 700 soldiers who were sent were numbered as a thousand, and the armor and fighting tools were all well-trained, and each attack was indestructible, called trap Chen Camp.
As the commander of the trapped camp, Gao Shun's military ability was naturally very strong, which can be seen from his successive defeats of Liu Bei and Xiahou Huan. However, Gao Shun was repeatedly suspected by Lü Bu, and even confiscated the command of the "trapped camp" by Lü Bu. Lü Bu, who had always been stupid, gave Gao Shun's "trapped camp" to Wei Xu, but in exchange for only betrayal.
In the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Wei Xu is one of the "Eight Jian Generals" under Lü Bu's account. In the Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms, Wei Xu was Lü Bu's most trusted general. The reason why Wei Xu was able to become Lü Bu's confidant was neither because of how strong his personal strength was, nor because of how outstanding his military ability was, nor because of how loyal he was to Lü Bu, but only because he was related to Lü Bu by marriage, nothing more.
According to the Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms, Lü Bu's biography, quoting the Records of Heroes, "Wei Continued to have relatives from outside to inside, and the generals of Xi Daishun were continued. From this record, it can be seen that there are outer and inner relatives between Wei Xu and Lü Bu, and the outer and inner relatives are the so-called in-laws. Because of this, under the influence of this relationship, Lü Bu took the command of the elite troops "trapped in the camp" from Gao Shun's hands and handed it over to Wei Xu.
History is often ridiculous, and Lü Bu regarded Wei Xu as a beloved general, and even handed over to him the command of the elite troops "trapped in the camp", in exchange for betrayal. In the third year of Jian'an (198), Cao Cao personally conquered Lü Bu and besieged him in xia pi. At this critical moment, Wei Xu, together with Hou Cheng and Song Xian, bound Chen Gong and led his army to surrender to Cao Cao, and the history says that "in march of the Siege of Taizu, he centrifuged up and down, and he bound Hou Cheng, Song Xian, and Wei Xian to Chen Palace and lowered them."
In fact, Lü Bu regarded Wei Xu as a close confidant solely by means of his in-law relationship, which was essentially a nepotism. Lü Bu employs people like this, can he be undefeated?
