Sun Jinchuan, born in 1895 in Shou County, Anhui, also known as Fang Gan, once used the names Sun Jingchuan and Sun Jisheng. At the age of 11, he entered the Jinling Manufacturing Bureau in Nanjing (the predecessor of Changan Automobile) as a child laborer. After completing the division, he came to Shanghai to work in the Great China Spinning Factory (now the Eighth National Cotton Factory) and the Xingfa Machinery Factory. Later, he was fired from Xingfa Machinery Factory for fighting for an injured worker. In the 12th year of the Republic of China (1923), he entered the Shanghai Railway Wusong Machine Factory as a fitter.

After the counter-revolutionary coup d'état, Sun Jinchuan traveled back and forth to Wuhan, Jiujiang, Shanghai, and other places to receive and resettle exiled comrades from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, and Gansu provinces on behalf of the All-China Railway Federation of Trade Unions, and secretly rectify and restore railway trade unions and party organizations in various localities. At the end of April and the beginning of May 1927, Sun Jinchuan attended the Fifth National Congress of the Party held in Hankou.
