The post-90s doctors of Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital joined the company for one month and donated hematopoietic stem cells to 2-year-old children

On the morning of September 8, Wu Han, a resident physician in the Department of Thoracic Surgery of Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, completed the collection of hematopoietic stem cells. Hematopoietic stem cells drawn from his body were immediately sent to Guangzhou for a 2-year-old child to undergo transplantation.

Wu Han, 27, just graduated with a Ph.D. this year. 2 years ago, during his internship in the discipline, he registered as a volunteer of the China Bone Marrow Bank. When he was about to graduate with his ph.D., he received a notice of successful matching with a child with a blood disorder...

"Special Gift" for Ph.D. Graduation

Born in 1994, Wu Han graduated from Wuhan Tongji Medical College with a Ph.D. this year. More than a month ago, he joined the Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital as a thoracic surgeon.

As he was about to graduate, he received a "graduation gift" of special significance.

It turned out that at the beginning of 2019, when he participated in the discipline internship at his alma mater, Wu Han learned about the Situation of the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank and Chinese Blood Disease Patients. Thinking that donating hematopoietic stem cells could help patients, he registered his donation at the China Bone Marrow Bank and became a volunteer.

Before graduating this year, Wu Han received a call from the staff of the China Bone Marrow Bank, and Wu Han and a 2-year-old child in Guangzhou were successfully matched. If he agrees to donate, the next test and blood collection are required.

Wu Han admitted that when registering, he also expected hematopoietic stem cells to be used, but he did not expect it to be so fast. After discussing and receiving support from his family and friends, he quickly completed the pre-donation medical examination. On September 8, according to the plan, hematopoietic stem cell collection was carried out at the Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital.

The whole journey is more than 3 hours without discomfort

On the morning of September 8, hematopoietic stem cell collection began. The collection needle penetrates into the blood vessel, the blood drawn from Wu Han's body passes through the instrument, the hematopoietic stem cells are isolated, and then the rest of the blood components are transfused back into Wu Han's body.

"The (collection) process doesn't hurt. The pain of the mobilization injection before collection is the same as the feeling of donating blood in normal times. Wu Han said that when the stem cells were collected, the whole time they were lying on the bed, the process was more than 3 hours.

The collected hematopoietic stem cells were carefully preserved and immediately transported to Guangzhou by air, where they would be used by doctors at local hospitals for transplantation of children.

Wu Han said that whether it is as a doctor who treats patients and saves people, or as an ordinary person, he is very happy and proud to have the opportunity to help a patient. At the same time, he also hopes that more people will join the cause of the China Bone Marrow Bank, so that more patients with blood diseases can have hope for life.

Hematopoietic stem cell donation

There is no adverse effect on the donor's body

"Donation and transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells is the only means of treating many blood diseases, even patients with acute leukemia." Huang Xiaobing, director of the Department of Hematology at Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, explained. For a healthy person, a single collection of hematopoietic stem cells is about 200-300 ml, which will not have any impact on the health level of the donor.

Hematopoietic stem cell donation, which is also known as "bone marrow donation" by ordinary people. However, with the development and progress of medical technology, the collection and donation of hematopoietic stem cells are no longer extracted through the tail vertebrae, but are directly isolated and collected from peripheral blood.

In the mobilization stage, the hospital strictly follows the standards and specifications of the Chinese bone marrow bank, selects the medication and dosage of the mobilization needle, and injects the donor for 4 consecutive days, so that the number of white blood cells in the peripheral blood is significantly increased, and the collection is carried out after reaching the standard.

The collection is generally carried out on day 5, and the process is similar to that of ordinary blood donation, through a cell division instrument, the hematopoietic stem cells in the blood are isolated, and the remaining blood components are transfused back into the donor. Since the collection is carried out in a completely enclosed and medically safe environment, the safety of the collection process can be guaranteed.
