Afraid to read the classics? Guided in this way, children will fall in love with reading Hemingway

To read, you must read the classics, but the classics are "not so easy to read".

If you want your child to pick up a book and read it, adults must first be a "book salesman" to mobilize children's interest in reading from different angles.

For example, the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature said in its acceptance speech that Hemingway was "a great writer of our time, a writer who faithfully and courageously reproduced the true face of the hardships and dangers of the times."

This is a very loud professional evaluation, but unfortunately for children, it does not attract them.

At the beginning of each theme reading, the "Family Culture Coach and Companion Reading Program" for primary school students pays great attention to the introduction of the curriculum, which not only preserves and extracts the power of the classics, but also closes the distance between the classics and the children.

"How can there be such a fun thing"

We started with "How can there be such a funny and strange thing".

The children looked at a few pictures first. In these pictures, we can see some grandfathers with white beards and khaki clothes, looking almost exactly the same. Why do these people get together?

We look at the third picture to see that there is a grandfather with a trophy in his hand and wins the championship, so what kind of competition are they participating in?

The answer: They participate in the annual Hemingway Imitation Show.

Every year around Hemingway's birthday in July, hundreds of grandfathers, who think they are similar to Hemingway's, come to the small town of Key West to go to the beach with the local residents to fish, enjoy wine and cigars, and pay tribute to the great writer. These things were hemingway's favorite activities during his lifetime.

In addition to the imitation show to see who looks like, there are also talent shows, short story contests, and so on. Participants also came from all walks of life, including real estate agents, doctors, and farmers. So what is the magic of Hemingway, so many people come to commemorate him so many years after his death? (He's been dead for 60 years by 2021.) )

Hemingway his people

Let's get to know this amazing author.

Born in the United States, Hemingway was raised in very different ways by his father and mother. His father was a doctor whose greatest interest was fishing and hunting, hoping to develop his son into a true "true man." His art-loving mother intends to cultivate his talents in painting and music.

(You read that right, this is little Hemingway who was dressed as a girl by his mother)

Under the cultivation of his father, Hemingway learned to cook in the wild when he was a child, cut down branches with an axe to build shelters, kill fish and chickens, cook and roast, and is simply a survival master in the wild.

These actions with his father, along with his understanding of gender differences and preferences for masculinity, had a lasting impact on Hemingway.

In 1918, Hemingway traveled to Europe to fight in World War I, where he was seriously wounded on the Italian front to save others. Later, in the Spanish Civil War and in the smoke of World War II, he left his footprints. Sometimes as a warrior with a gun, sometimes as a journalist with a pen in his hand, he pushes forward the advent of peace in his own unique way. He also came to China during World War II, and interviewed Song Meiling in Chongqing with his wife, who was also a war correspondent, is it not amazing?

Hemingway was a man who lived to the extreme, and he did countless things that others wanted to do but did not dare to do, dared to do but could not do.

He enjoys baseball, fishing, hunting, drinking, and gunfire, all other activities that show "masculinity." He loves to watch boxing matches, he loves boxing, and he is beaten to the point of breaking his hand; he is passionate about bullfighting and fights himself; he goes hunting in the forest and is almost eaten by lions! After being hit by a shell, he underwent ten surgeries and removed more than 230 pieces of shrapnel from his body to save his life. He had two plane crashes, forest fires, etc...

Despite being the world's best-known "tough guy", he also has an extremely gentle side. His last words to the world were: "Good night, my kitten." ”

In his will, he also specifically stated that the cats were the owners of the courtyard, that they could enjoy everything here, that they could play freely, that they could rest in bed, that they could meditate on the future in the study.

The Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the Sea is a great work, arguably the best of all Hemingway's works. There is a famous sentence in this book: "Man is not born to fail, a man can be destroyed, but he cannot be defeated." This simple sentence runs through the entire book of "The Old Man and the Sea" and is also a portrayal of Hemingway himself.

The story of "The Old Man and the Sea" is based on real people and real events. In his early years as a journalist, Hemingway listened to an old fisherman on the shores of Cuba who told the story of his own experience. This shocking story echoed in his heart for a long time, and more than a decade later, Hemingway's creative desire exploded, and it took 8 weeks to complete the first draft of the story, which is the world-famous "The Old Man and the Sea".

The protagonist of the story is santiago, an old fisherman, who lives by the sea. The fisherman, of course, makes a living by fishing, but he didn't catch a single fish for 84 days before the story. Even the little boy who fished with him was forced by his parents to go to another fishing boat because they thought Santiago's luck was too bad!

But Santiago didn't give up, and he went on to sea. On the 85th day, he finally waited for a huge marlin, bigger than the largest fish he had ever caught in his life, bigger than his boat.

When he used to catch big fish, he was with his companions. This time, not even the little boy who helped was there, and the only thing Santiago could rely on was himself. Based on his experience and spirit of not giving up, he fought with this fish for three days and two nights, and finally caught these fish. He tied the fish to a small boat and prepared to transport it back, and if it went well, the fish would allow him to live and live for the next six months.

But good fortune was not on his side. All kinds of sharks surrounded the boat and devoured the big fish little by little, and Santiago did not sit still, he tenaciously fought the shark with his harpoon, knife and even oar.

When he returned to shore, the astonishingly large fish was left with its astonishingly white bones.

In the beginning, Santiago, who had not caught a fish for 84 days, was a "loser"; when he returned again, Santiago dragged back only a huge fish bone.

Do you think he failed?

What do you think of "success" and "failure"?
