Zhang Kunshan, born in 1952 in Zibo, Shandong, is a national first-class artist. He has been re-elected as the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh directors of the China Book Association for 30 years. He is one of the representative calligraphers in the field of contemporary epigraphy creation and cursive writing, and is an active explorer and practitioner of combining inscriptions and posts and entering the grass with tablets.
Zhang Kunshan is low-key and humble, and his calligraphy creation always follows the principle of pioneering and enterprising, upright and innovative on the basis of inheriting tradition, and has maintained a strong creative force for a long time. He is also the deputy director of the Calligraphy Industry Construction Committee of the China Book Association, the vice president of the Naval Fine Arts Book Court, the president of the Beijing Guodu Moyun Calligraphy and Painting Institute, the researcher of the Rongbao Zhai Book Court, a member of the "Calligraphy Class" of the Central Museum of Culture and History, a review expert of the National Art Fund of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and an expert who enjoys the special contribution allowance of the State Council government.

Since the early 1980s, Zhang Kunshan's calligraphy art has emerged in the country. In the past 40 years, he has participated in hundreds of calligraphy exhibitions sponsored by the China Book Association, the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and the Chinese Ministry of Culture, such as the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Eleventh and Twelfth National Book Fairs, the National Calligraphy Exhibition of the Ministry of Culture and the International Calligraphy Exhibition, as well as the China Youth Exhibition, the Yang Lian Exhibition, the Cursive Book Exhibition, and the previous All-Army Exhibitions. He has won more than ten gold medals in national calligraphy competitions, such as the gold medal of the 1994 International Calligraphy Exhibition, the gold medal of the 1987 Patriotic Cup Calligraphy Competition, the gold medal of the 1986 Du Kang Cup Calligraphy Competition, the gold medal of the 1992 Huaisu Cursive Calligraphy Exhibition, and the highest award for Lin Sanzhi's academic achievements. He has served as a judge and director of the Supervision Commission of the National All-Army Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition for many times. He has published more than 1 million words of books and chapters, and published more than 20 kinds of personal monographs. He has been selected by People's Daily, China Net, Calligraphy Newspaper, etc. as "Baoding of The Culture Construction of the Republic", "Outstanding Figures in the 30 Years of Reform and Opening Up", "Ten Great People of Contemporary Cursive Calligraphy", "20 People of Contemporary Steles" and so on.
Zhang Kunshan is based on the study of steles, diligent and unremitting, and lays a solid foundation in traditional art. He has been near hundreds of inscriptions, and in the early days he worked on the "Er cuan", the "Guangwu General Monument", the "Shimen Ming" and some classic epitaphs. On the basis of taking root in ancient epigraphy, Zhang Kunshan constantly broadened his horizons, broadened his thinking, and included the essence of the theology in the field of theology, and at different times he conducted in-depth exploration of the classic works of Jin Wen, Han Li, Jin, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing, and even some folk briefs and brick inscriptions, and tried his best to use the macro, consider the creation, eclecticism, and integration. He believes that the greater the artist's appetite, the stronger the digestion.
Zhang Kunshan has the courage to climb with perseverance, break new ground, and constantly take "creative transformation and development in innovation" as the concept of calligraphy creation, open up a set of personalized artistic language, and walk out of a difficult road to the peak of calligraphy art. Through his comprehensive experience of the five kinds of books, he gave full play to the individual advantages of combining inscriptions and posts and being good at both five bodies.

Zhang Kunshan is good at five bodies and specializes in cursive writing. His cursive writing was conceived from the calligraphy of the Stele School, and was full of the majesty and simplicity of the North Stele. He advocated the artistic realm of Calligraphers such as Wang Xizhi, Huai Su, Zhu Yunming, Fu Shan, Ni Yuanlu, Yu Youren and other calligraphers, and on the basis of inheriting the tradition, he loved the enrichment of cursive art elements, and strived to try and explore new methods and new thinking of calligraphy with pen and ink, and combined with the spirit of contemporary art, giving cursive, especially wild grass, a new life connotation and golden stone weather.
In 2018, the "Ancient Calligraphy Exhibition - Zhang Kunshan Calligraphy Exhibition" was held in Beijing, and experts and scholars believed that Zhang Kunshan's calligraphy tradition has deep roots and full of creativity, highlighting his perseverance, courage and enterprising spirit and his contemporary art ideas. Su Shishu, chairman of the China Book Association, said: "Zhang Kunshan's calligraphy has profound traditional skills, and can have new developments on the basis of tradition, I hope that he will live up to the times, have the courage to practice, and constantly climb new artistic peaks." ”
