Calligraphy and painting all-round | the genius painter Huang Shanshou (130 paintings)

He is one of the few early-wise genius painters and the master of "all-round calligraphy and painting" among the painters of the Maritime School, such as figures, ladies, green landscapes, double hooked flowers and birds, and ink dragons, walking beasts, grass worms, ink plums, bamboo stones, all of which are indispensable. Among the famous masters of the nineteenth century, in terms of themes, only Ren Xiong, Ren Pre's father and son, as well as Wu Youru and Lu Hui, could be compared with them.

Huangshan Shou

(1855-1919) Was originally named Yao (曜), literally "Xun Chu", was a native of Wujin (present-day Changzhou), Jiangsu Province, known as Xu Chi Old Man, Li Sheng, Hexi Yuyin, and The Lord of The Cutting Tobacco Pavilion. Officials are directly subordinate to Tongzhi. His works include the axis of "Autumn Mountain Flying Waterfall Map", which is now in the Shanghai Museum; the axis of "Imitation of Zhao Mengfu's Green Landscape Map" in the 29th year of Guangxu (1903), the "Album of Colored Flowers", the axis of "Plum Blossom Diagram" in the first year of Xuantong (1909), which was recorded in "Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Calligraphy and Painting"; "Imitation of the Loose Map of the Stone Wall of The River Guandao" and "Lesson Map" were all recorded in the "Zhiyutang Calligraphy and Painting Record"; and the banner of "Beauty Hanxiang Map" was recorded in the 1996 edition of the "Chinese Antique Market Expo".

Born in the fifth year of Qing Xianfeng, Huang Shanshou was born in a poor family, and he was talented in painting at an early age, and he was determined to copy the true works of his predecessors in calligraphy and painting, and people could not distinguish between true and false. He also got the guidance of several famous masters, and the teenager became famous. Later, it came from becoming one, in terms of subject matter, taking the popular route, good at painting the pictures of "Antarctic Birthday Star" and "Jiaguan Jinjue", the picture was elegant and simple, both, full of joy, and there were many imitators.

His works from his teens to his twenties, he worked hard to learn the ancients, specializing in ink and ink, in the pen and ink color, strictly abide by the ancient law, take light elegance as the sect, and there is no disease of rich and vulgar. Pure in ink and skillful in pen, it shows that he is a precocious genius painter everywhere.

His works at the age of thirty have the momentum of their own family with a stroke full of confidence. His masterpiece of this period, "Dongpo Gushitu", is an ink and silk hand scroll, with the introduction of Wang Chao's title of Jiayin (Guangxu Decade, 1884). Landscape paintings before Huang Shanshou was forty years old are generally rarely seen in the market.

From the age of thirty to fifty, Huang Shanshou developed the theme of the characters and ladies more skillfully and concisely, reaching the realm of elegant and common appreciation. Among the late painters of the Maritime School, Huang Shanshou was one of the few who could paint poems. The five or seven sentences he wrote were very rare for him to be steady in his work, clear and clean in speech, and able to complement the meaning of the painting.

Later, he "traveled to Ningbo, eastern Guangdong and Jinmen, and his paintings were very famous." As a result of the trip, the reputation of the people increased greatly, and he was learned by the Qing court, summoned to the palace, and given the official direct subordinate to Tongzhi. For folk painters, this is equivalent to a fish leaping dragon gate, which is a matter of honoring the ancestors. The main function of the court painter was to praise the royal family, so he painted more royal portraits and daily subjects.

According to the descendants of the Huang family, Huang Shanshou painted portraits of Cixi and Guangxu. The Huang family tree also records that Huang Shanshou drew 12 "Qunxian Zhushou Maps" before the 70th birthday of Empress Dowager Cixi, which were collected as treasures in the Forbidden City. However, individuals under the big situation, even the Lord of the Golden Ruan Hall, could not control their own destiny, although Huang Shanshou had always been "sincere in words and deeds, willing to do good".

In 1900, the Gengzi Rebellion broke out, and Empress Dowager Cixi abandoned the city and fled. In the chaos of the war, Huang Shanshou, who had been favored by the royal family, also left the capital. Last year, Shanghai spent its old age selling paintings for a living.

He died in Shanghai in 1919 at the age of sixty-five.
