Story: Premier Zhou Enlai's return to the Whampoa Military Academy in Guangzhou

Wu Ruilin

In the spring of 1964, I was holding a meeting at the Beijing Naval Headquarters, and one day after lunch at noon, I was preparing to rest at the guest house, when suddenly someone knocked on the door and came in, and when I saw that it was Comrade Luo Qingchang, who was my old comrade-in-arms in the Red Army era and then deputy director of Premier Zhou's office, walked in, he said to me directly: I have just come from the premier, and the premier is going to Guangzhou to inspect the South China Sea Fleet and the Huangpu Port, please be prepared. When, I ask? Director Luo replied that five days later. I asked: Is this reported to the Navy? He replied: The prime minister has explained: there is no need to raise the masses. After saying that, he did not sit down for a moment and immediately went out and went back. I still reported to Commander Xiao Jinguang of the Navy, who replied: Follow the instructions of the prime minister. I immediately rushed back to Guangzhou and reported to Commander Huang Yongsheng of the Guangzhou Military Region. Then, a meeting was held at the fleet headquarters, the corresponding arrangements were made, and the inspection was made at the Whampoa Port.

On the fifth day, the premier came to visit Huangpu on time, and accompanied by vice premier Chen Yi and Mr. Zhang Zhizhong, who accompanied Comrade Tao Zhu by boat from Xinzhou to Huangpu, I went to Xinzhou to take them to Jiang.

The warship troops and organ personnel under construction at Whampoa Port were all neatly lined up to welcome them. After the premier disembarked from the ship in Huangpu, he shook hands with Deputy Commander Wang Quanzhen, Li Xin, director of the Fleet Training Department, and Yang Yongnian, minister of repairs, who had come to greet him, and waved to the rest of the personnel, and everyone warmly applauded and welcomed them.

I said to the Prime Minister, "Prime Minister, let's look at the statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen first." ”

The Prime Minister said cheerfully, "Good! ”

We had already prepared three handfuls of flowers and pines, handed them to the Premier, Vice Premier Chen and Mr. Zhang, and they presented the flowers to the statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and bowed three times.

Comrade Tao Zhu said: "Old Wu, you have made a very thorough preparation for this work. ”

Mr. Zhang Zhizhong said with particular pleasure: "Your young commander has thought very carefully and thoughtfully; what makes me think of it is that the Communist Party has talent, but the Kuomintang has no talent." ”

Vice Premier Chen Yi said: "You can do diplomatic work. ”

The prime minister said, "That's not okay, he was appointed by Chairman Mao to guard the Southern Gate." ”

Everyone walked and talked, and after walking around the statue of Zhongshan for a week, the premier pointed to the small building and said, "That small building over there is still there, mr. Sun lived." ”

Dr. Sun Yat-sen lived in the Little Yellow House in Whampoa Port

Mr. Zhang Zhizhong said: "Chiang Kai-shek also lived there. ”

The Prime Minister said to Comrade Tao Zhu: "Comrade Tao Zhu, it is up to your cultural department to repair it and preserve this historical monument."

The prime minister went to the southeast corner of the statue again, and when he saw the cracks in the statue, he said, "Here also need to be reinforced." ”

Comrade Tao Zhu said: "The cultural department is responsible for all this. ”

I accompanied the premier to the reading room of Zhongshan's former residence. Inside, there are huge portraits of Sun Yat-sen and Chairman Mao. I also saw a photo of Premier Zhou at the Whampoa Military Academy.

The Prime Minister said in amazement: "Where did you get this picture?" ”

I replied, "It was sent by a farmer who, according to his own account, had worked with the Prime Minister and protected him. We left the photographs behind and gave him two hundred pounds of grain and some fish and meat. He said he lived here, and according to this there were about three or four miles of the road. ”

Comrade Tao Zhu said: "Don't lose this photo of the prime minister, ask the Municipal Bureau of Culture to take a few copies, and other places also need it." ”

Chen Yi and Zhang Zhizhong both said, "This is good." ”

The prime minister said: "We must also hang the pictures of the marshals, side by side with me, but we must not hang them on the top and stand side by side with Chairman Mao." ”

I said, "I'll do it." ”
