Location and history

Miyashita Park is located in The Shibuya Ward of Tokyo, which is known for its bustling business, and is known as the "Fashion Center of Asia" where popular culture among young people is popular. In such a commercially predominantly commercial area, public space is scarce. The entire site is about 330 meters long, sandwiched between the JR Yamanote Line and Meiji Pass, and the Shibuya River Underground Canal passes through the ground. In 1953, the park was established in the Miyashita-cho area, adjacent to the former imperial residence. Developed in 1966 as Tokyo's first sky park, it is well known to Shibuya residents and tourists for its ice rink and parking lot. Prior to this reconstruction, due to the aging of the main structure of the foundation, the park's earthquake resistance was not good, and it was unable to cope with the increasingly serious urban disaster problem. In addition, the public functions and commercial functions of the site are chaotic, and the mature barrier-free system has not been established, which urgently needs to be upgraded.

Design analysis

idea

The design team hopes to create a high-quality public leisure space in this commercial area by integrating various facilities around the park, while taking into account both commercial and infrastructure needs. Maximize the use of functions in a limited footprint to meet the needs of greenery while ensuring the safety of traffic lines on both sides. In addition, the design team wanted to create a new cultural symbol for Shibuya through the use of a strong formal language.

structure

Due to the shortage of urban land, the renovation still adopts the model of three-dimensional park. The three-dimensional park system is not only a simple sunken square, roof garden, etc., but each composite functional system is interspersed with each other in the three-dimensional space and organically integrated. The lower four floors of the project are parking buildings and commercial spaces, and the top floor is an urban park. A pedestrian system of stairs, sunken plazas, etc. leads through the lower four floors to the top garden, connecting infrastructure, commerce and public spaces. Interaction between public and commercial volumes is achieved through line-of-sight, outdoor space connectivity, and so on.

Moving lines and layouts

The entire project is divided into two blocks, north and south by the district road, and is connected by a roof garden on the fourth floor, ensuring the continuity of the 330-meter-long park. In addition to the entrances and exits at the north and south ends, people can enter the mall floor through the stairs on both sides from the junction of the north and south blocks, and then go up the wide large stairs to the park, which not only ensures the convenience of transportation, but also a friendly gesture towards pedestrians on the district road. The arched canopy gradually increases from the north and south ends to the middle, and here it is completely open above, combined with large steps and nearby rest seats, forming an open and comfortable gathering and communication space. There is a pedestrian bridge across the north and south blocks leading across the Meiji To the west.

The north and south blocks are also different in style: the south block is close to Harajuku, which is also the "Street of Young People", the style is younger and more energetic, there is a parking lot on the first floor, the shops are mainly cultural brands and sports brands such as Adidas, and the corresponding four floors also have multi-functional sports venues; while the north block is connected to the 18-storey hotel, the overall style is more mature and elegant, the shops are dominated by fashion brands such as LV and GUCCI, and the corresponding four floors are large flat lawns.

Publicity and commerciality

People can easily reach this park from anywhere in the surrounding area via a walking system. The large entrance staircase and the outdoor space of the mall not only provide transportation, but also enable the natural transition between public space and commercial space. The top floor features a large lawn, a multi-purpose sports field and a complete park infrastructure, and a continuous arched canopy covers the entire park area, giving people a strong sense of field. In this predominantly commercial neighborhood, Miyashita Park provides a comfortable rest space for people and a venue for Shibuya's characteristic cultural events.

Another important part of the project is the commercial volume. The redevelopment integrates a four-storey commercial space, an 18-storey hotel, and a supporting infrastructure such as a parking building. In order to integrate well with the park and expand the public space as much as possible, the mall basically adopts glass swing doors to open up indoor and outdoor lines of sight. People look out at the outdoor park from the spacious and comfortable interior, and they are integrated with nature.

Sustainability and safety

Considering the insecurity caused by the collapse of trees to traffic such as the JR Yamanote Line, the design team decided to use an arched "canopy" to meet the park's shading needs. Such a strong continuous arch has also become a new symbol of Shibuya. The entire block adopts three-dimensional greenery, which alleviates the heat island effect, vacuums and reduces noise under the premise of reducing the amount of building cover, and does not need to use air conditioning in public areas, which meets the requirements of sustainable construction.

Datapark summary

The renovation was a new life for Miyashita Park, which was founded in 1664, not only integrating commercial functions, but also opening up valuable high-quality public spaces, while carefully considering the requirements of disaster reduction and sustainable development. In addition, the strong symbolic language has given Shibuya, which has exported a large number of popular cultures at home and abroad, a new symbolic symbol, adding new connotations to Shibuya culture.
