Ferguson mourns Walter Smith: I feel extremely sad and will miss him very much

Live on 26 October 2019 Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson posted tribute to the recently deceased Scottish coach Walter Smith, who briefly served as Ferguson's assistant in 2004.

Ferguson posted a tribute: "<b>I feel extremely sad that Walter is a very special person who fought against the disease with great courage. He was a good friend of mine for many years, he was my assistant when I was coaching at Manchester United in 2004 and he was also my assistant when Scotland reached the World Cup in 1986. During this time, I have been dealing with a man with high moral standards, as reflected in his lifestyle and the friendships he has brought to so many people. His contributions to Dundee United, Rangers, Scotland, Everton and Manchester United are enormous. </b>”

"<b>He's been at Manchester United for a short time, but he's a great guy. Queiroz went to Real Madrid and I needed an assistant, so called Walter, who was here for six months to help us win the FA Cup against Millwall. He has a great connection with people because he's a great listener, which is one of his greatest qualities. He listens to others, shows interest in others, and helps everyone as much as possible. It was a huge loss to the football game and to everyone who knew him, and I extend my sincere condolences to his wife Ethel and his two sons, Neil and Steven. I will miss him very much. </b>”

Walter Smith played for Dundee United and Dumbarton as a player, retiring as assistant coach to Ferguson and coaching the Glasgow Rangers, Everton and Scottish national teams. More than three hours ago, the Glasgow Rangers Club officially confirmed the death of Walter Smith, and the Rangers Club also issued a statement mourning the team legend.
