Studies say hainan island was separated from Vietnam a million years ago or in the Mesozoic Era adjacent to Vietnam

According to the russian media report on April 28, according to the research of scientists in Kunming, China, the flora and fauna of Hainan Island are similar to those of Vietnam, but have little in common with Guangdong Province.

According to the Russian satellite network reported on April 27, a team of scientists led by Zhu Hua, a professor at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, found that most of the animals and plants living or growing on the island are the same as those in Vietnam. Specifically, scientists have calculated that 110 species of plants are shared by Vietnam and Hainan, while only 7 species of plants are shared by Hainan and Guangdong. The same can be observed by comparing fauna in these regions: 30 of the 41 mammal species on Hainan Island are also found in Vietnam.

Therefore, scientists speculate that Hainan Island may have been adjacent to what is now Vietnam's territory millions of years ago. They argue that the island system separated from the mainland during the Mesozoic Era, and that such geographical changes may have been triggered by volcanic activity in the Gulf of Tonkin.

The scientists added that not all of Hainan was adjacent to Vietnam, and that the northeast of Hainan might have been connected to what is now Guangxi Province.
