Shanghai "Mazi No. 3" unsolved case

I. "Mazi No. 3"

From May 15 to 18, 1930, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China secretly held the First National Conference of Regional Soviet Deputies and the National Conference of Red Army Deputies in Shanghai. In mid-May, Tan Zhenlin, deputy of the Xianggan-Gansu Border Soviet, Shao Shiping, deputy of the Northeast Jiangxi Soviet and the Red Army, Lei Jingtian, deputy of the Youjiang Base Soviet, Yun Daiying, deputy of the Southern Sichuan Soviet, Gao Jingting, representative of the Workers' and Peasants' and Soldiers' Democratic Government of Eyu and Anhui, Zhang Dingcheng, representative of the Workers' and Peasants' Main Government in western Fujian, Zhou Yiqun, deputy of the Western Hubei Soviet, Xie Jueya, representative of the Manchurian Provincial Committee of the CPC, Huang Gongluo, representative of the Third Army of the Red Army, Sun Deqing, commander of the Second Red Army, and Liu Zhixun, political commissar of the Sixth Red Army, and other "two sessions." More than thirty deputies arrived secretly in Shanghai from various Soviet regions throughout the country.

At that time, Shanghai was in the midst of white terror, and the central government held such an important meeting in Shanghai, and the first consideration was the safety of the delegates to the conference. To this end, Zhou Enlai, who presided over the work of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, not only personally participated in the planning of the plan, the selection of venues, the arrangement of emergency transfer channels and guard measures, but also visited the alternative venues several times, and finally made a decision to place the venue of the "two sessions" in the "Dekang Hospital" opened by the relevant departments of the Party Central Committee at No. 1143 Chengdu Road in the public concession. After the deputies of the "two sessions" arrived in Shanghai, the party's underground traffic station assigned traffic personnel to the joint site to greet them, and after several turns, the traffic officers at the last stop led the deputies to Chengdu Road and admitted to the hospital in the name of patients. After admission, the representative cannot go out, nor can he communicate with the outside world on the phone, and is under closed protection.

The "two sessions" lasted for four days, and on the fourth day (May 18), the afternoon meeting ended, and the delegates immediately withdrew from the venue. In view of the fact that the exit is Chengdu Road, the public concession Chengdu Road Patrol House (now No. 360 North Chengdu Road) is not far away, and there are armed patrols passing by on the road from time to time, so the deputies are leaving separately, and it takes some time for more than thirty deputies to evacuate. Unexpectedly, just when the last representative left in the hospital had not yet been evacuated, three men suddenly broke in outside. They did not seem to be unfamiliar with the internal structure of the hospital, and after entering the door, they went straight to the backyard ward and peeked into the wards.

The relevant central departments are equipped with guards in the hospital, but at this moment, they all go to escort the representatives who evacuated first, and only the staff of the hospital disguised as hospital employees are left. Although it was found that the three guys who claimed to be looking for a "recuperation ward" for the boss were not on the right path, they could only stop them in the name of briefing the situation.

Afterwards, it was learned that the three men were Qian Zuyi, a major inspector of the investigation brigade of the Songhu Police Headquarters, and two of his agents. They have clear goals and cannot be stopped. It was not too long, and the three of them met the last "patient" who stayed in the ward, the Soviet in northeast Jiangxi and the representative of the Red Army, Shao Shiping. Shao Shiping was accompanied by a veteran-level chinese revolutionary, Chen Tanqiu, who was then ordered to assist Zhou Enlai in charge of the central organization in Shanghai. Shao Shiping and Chen Tanqiu are both well-known figures hanging on the enemy's wanted list, and their photos of Qian Zuyi have long been familiar with them. At that moment, Qian Zuyi and the two agents pulled out their pistols, and Qian Zuyi ordered: "Handcuff up!" Call the team headquarters to get a 'big license plate' ambulance to come and take them away!"

At that time, the urban area of Shanghai was divided into three areas: the public concession, the French concession and the Chinese boundary, and the motor vehicle license plates were issued by the authorities themselves. Such an approach is inevitably inconvenient, so the authorities of the three regions reached a consensus after consultation and introduced a "big license plate" with a higher cost than the ordinary license plate, and the vehicles with "big license plates" can pass freely in the three areas. The Reconnaissance Brigade of the Kuomintang Songhu Police Command has a police car, but according to the agreement, if the Police of the Chinese Border and the Concession need to carry out the mission of arresting and taking prisoners in each other's areas, they must be written by the relevant functional departments, carried out by the corresponding departments of the other side, and then go through the extradition formalities before they can escort the arrested persons back to their own areas. At this moment, Qian Zuyi's three people are "crossing the border for private investigation", if they are detected by the public concession patrol house, of course, they will not be allowed to arrest people at will, and can only use ambulances to take the arrestees away in the name of "transfer".

The situation at that time was really a one-off. The two dark-skinned masters of the two agents took out the handcuffs from their arms and signaled the other tall thin man to look at Chen and Shao, and the tall thin man nodded his head in understanding. At this moment, an unbelievable scene occurred, only to see the tall thin man raise his gun and open fire on Qian Zuyi and the black-faced agent respectively, and the two fell to the ground in a hurry, and they were killed immediately. Immediately, the tall thin man said to Chen and Shao, "They are dead, leave me alone, it will be all right." Please leave the two officers at once and take the pistols away!" With that, turn the muzzle of the gun and pull the trigger on your left shoulder, then drop the pistol.

In this way, Shao Shiping and Chen Tanqiu were able to escape from danger. Later, the Chengdu Road arrest house patrol that received the alarm arrived, and the three men lying in a pool of blood were killed and injured twice, and the three did not carry any items that could be identified, and the wounded also refused to disclose their identities. The Western detectives headed by the group ordered that the wounded who had lost too much blood should first be sent to the "Guangren Hospital" in the public concession for treatment, and after investigating the scene, the two bodies were sent directly to the morgue of the police department of the concession. The Police Department of the Public Concession Bureau received a report that this was a major homicide case that needed to be investigated by a special team, and in addition to keeping the "Dekang Hospital" strictly confidential, it also required that Chinese and foreign police officers should not be interviewed by the press.

This tall, thin man named Zhao Baohao, who injured himself after decisively killing the enemy at a critical moment, was an insider of the investigation brigade of the Songhu Police Headquarters installed by the secret department directly under the CPC Central Committee. Zhao is a native of Ningbo, Zhejiang, born in poverty, came to Shanghai at the age of fourteen, apprenticed in the "Dalong Machine Factory", and after three years of completing his teacher, he jumped to the "Deng Taiji Machine Factory" as a mechanic. In the late autumn of 1926, in the preparations for the first workers' armed uprising led by the CCP, the underground party organization obtained a batch of old guns and secretly transported them to the Dragon King Temple in Pudong for maintenance by craftsmen, who were only twenty-two years old at the time but had eight years of mechanical repair experience. Zhao Baohao came into contact with the underground party members who accompanied the craftsmen day and night, quickly raised his consciousness, repaired the guns, and took the initiative to ask to stay. The underground party needed such talents so that after the uprising was launched, the weapons of the rebellious workers could be repaired in time if they failed, and they agreed to Zhao Baohao's request.

However, his wish to go to the front line and participate directly in the battle was not realized. After the uprising was launched, he used his technology to repair guns and bullets on the spot, and afterwards the commander-in-chief of the uprising, Zhou Enlai, commented that its role was no less than or even more than direct participation in front-line operations. After the failure of the first workers' armed uprising, Zhao Baohao simply resigned from the "Deng Tai Ji Machine Factory" to prepare for the second and third workers' armed uprisings as a professional and technical personnel without remuneration, and directly participated in the third workers' armed uprising launched on March 21, 1927. On the third day after the uprising, Zhao Baohao joined the Communist Party of China.

On March 22, 1927, Bai Chongxi, the former enemy commander of the Eastern Route Army of the Northern Expeditionary Army, led his troops into Shanghai, and in September, Bai Chongxi was ordered to form the "Songhu Garrison Headquarters" and appointed himself commander. In the spring of the following year, Bai Chongxi led the army on a westward expedition, and the National Government in Nanjing appointed Xiong Shihui, commander of the 37th Division of the Army, to act as the commander of the garrison, which was changed to "Songhu Garrison Headquarters" in April of the same year.

When Bai Chongxi formed the Songhu Garrison Headquarters, Zhang Bang recruited relevant functional personnel from the society, including detectives (spies) of the detective brigade. The party organization saw this as an opportunity to break into the enemy's interior, and Zhao Baohao was ordered to sign up, receive special agent training, and after graduation, become an agent of the investigation detachment directly under the Songhu Garrison Headquarters. The party organization demanded that he first conceal his secret identity and secondly gather intelligence. In particular, the leader stressed that the intelligence collected by non-superior instructions, even if it is sent to the door, should be ignored, because this may be a test of the enemy.

Zhao Baohao strictly implemented the instructions of his superiors and remained silent for three years. He did not know about the "two sessions" held by the central authorities this time, and he did not issue any mission organizationally. This afternoon, when Zhao and another agent, Wang Mou, were outside investigating a criminal case and riding a motorcycle to prepare to report to their superiors, they were stopped by Inspector Qian Zuyi, saying that the two of you would then go on a business trip with me, just waiting for your "big license plate" motorcycle to come back. Zhao Baohao then knew that this trip was to go to the concession. The motorcycle stopped in a ballroom courtyard a hundred meters away from the scene on Chengdu Road in the public concession, and Qian asked him and Wang to check their weapons, and he realized that the situation might be different. I entered the "Dekang Hospital", went straight to the backyard, and then met Shao Shiping and Chen Tanqiu.

As an ordinary party member, Zhao Baohao certainly did not know Shao and Chen, two professional revolutionaries, but he had heard of their names and had also seen pictures of these two "communist criminals." At this moment, he knew that he was in a big deal, and the two party leaders were facing great danger. Zhao Baohao immediately killed the two agents, and he did not think about how to protect himself after doing so. As for self-harm, it was the idea that came after shooting qian and Wang.

After the patrol arrived, Zhao Baohao refused to answer any questions. He knew that if he said the wrong word at this moment, he might cause trouble. As for his identity, although none of the three of them had the documents of the Security Command, it seemed that after he was taken to the hospital, the Security Command would certainly soon learn of it and send personnel to negotiate with the Ministry of Works.

Sure enough, soon after Zhao Baohao was admitted to "Guangren Hospital", someone came to visit him. However, the first to arrive was not the personnel of the Security Command, but an underground Party member he had seen when he participated in the Third Workers' Armed Uprising. The patrol room did not yet know the identity of Zhao Baohao, they treated him as the object of the case, and arranged Hua Tan in the ward to "accompany him". But when Mr. Zeng quietly appeared, the "escort" just went outside to answer a phone call from the patrol room (naturally arranged by the underground party), and was not present. Mr. Zeng informed that the enemy failed to grasp the target, three plainclothes people were killed and two wounded, and one of the dead was a major officer, and the case was expected to be reported to the desk of the police commander Xiong Shihui, and even alarmed Chiang Kai-shek. The organization made an emergency judgment on the situation, and believed that you should be able to pass the next investigation of you, and you can continue to lurk after recovering from the injury. When the enemy questions you, you can say that the attacker fired a gun from the window. The organization has sent people to the scene to check, and the ballistic angle of the scene is in line with this statement. In addition, the organization has given you an important task, you have to find out how the enemy has mastered the information of the central government's important meeting at the "Dekang Hospital" on Chengdu Road.

The situation that followed was the same as the organizational estimate, and on the fourth day of hospitalization, Zhao Baohao was picked up by the reconnaissance brigade of the Security Command and placed under house arrest in a private french-run hospital in Xujiahui (The Chinese boundary area). "Escorting" Zhao Baohao was three plainclothes men sent by the Military Justice Department of the Security Command, and at the same time "escorting" him was interrogated in disguise. This kind of censorship should be considered relatively mild, and it was later learned that this was an order issued by Xiong Shihui himself.

Xiong Shihui this person is more superstitious. He had an ivory-handled Browning pistol given by Chiang Kai-shek, and he was inseparable from it like a treasure. Two months ago, he was out on patrol when he accidentally dropped his pistol into a pit while going to the toilet in a suburban barracks. If the soldiers were quickly salvaged, they had to be completely dismantled and thoroughly cleaned. The Security Command has a firearms repair station, and it is not a problem to deal with this matter. However, Xiong Shihui demanded that the craftsman's birthday and appearance must conform to his "heart", so that the birthday eight characters and photos of the craftsman who could repair it were sent for his review, but none of them passed. Then we have to think of another way. The adjutant reported that there was a member of the detective brigade who was a good craftsman before joining the army, do you want to see the person's birthday? The results of the review are in line with Commander Xiong's "heart". Handling such a pistol is naturally a piece of cake for Zhao Baohao, and Xiong Shihui is very satisfied.

Since then, Xiong Shihui has remembered Zhao Baohao as a person. When the Judge Advocate General had submitted a written report of the incident, he, seeing that the wounded detective was the man who repaired Browning for him, asked the adjutant to give an account to the Judge Advocate General and give preferential treatment when the person was examined. There is such a sentence that the Military Judicial Department naturally has a number in mind when it is examined. In just ten days, Zhao Baohao's gunshot wound improved, and when the doctor thought that he could be discharged from the hospital for recuperation, the conclusion of the military judicial department's review also came out, believing that Zhao Baohao had no problem.

Zhao Baohao, an orphan and a bachelor, had no place to live in Shanghai, and after being discharged from the hospital, he came to the collective dormitory of the detective detachment directly under the longhua town. Zhao Baohao remembered the top-secret mission explained by the organization, in addition to contacting a group of colleagues in the dormitory to understand the situation, every day when he went to the headquarters infirmary to change the medicine, he also stopped by to the Sergeant Lounge of the Military Justice Department to go around and talk with the sergeant.

Fast forward a month. At eight o'clock in the morning of June 18, 1930, the secret department directly under the central government suddenly received a message from a secret traffic point: "Xiao Juan" asked to implement the "Fourth Plan" today! "Xiao Juan" is Zhao Baohao's code name. When Zhao Baohao entered the security headquarters, the organization gave him seven joint schemes arranged in order of one to seven, each plan with a different joint location, time and joint method, and when it was necessary to verbally report important information to the organization, one of them could be selected according to the specific situation. Now Zhao Baohao was carrying out the "Fourth Plan," that is, meeting at Longhua Temple near the Songhu Police Headquarters at one o'clock in the afternoon of the same day. This was the first time that Zhao Baohao had asked for a joint after breaking into the enemy's interior, and organizationally judging that the task that might have been assigned to Zhao had borne fruit, he decided to still send Comrade Lao Zeng.

Who knows, just two hours later, another insider lurking in the Songhu Police Headquarters of our side suddenly sent a secret report: At about 10:00 a.m., a shootout broke out at the entrance of the dormitory of the reconnaissance detachment directly under the Security Command, and several agents were ordered to go to the dormitory to arrest Zhao Baohao, a "communist lurker." Zhao Baohao shot himself after killing one person and injuring two people, and died heroically!

On the same day, Zhou Enlai, who presided over the daily work of the central authorities, assigned special personnel to conduct a special investigation into the two interrelated incidents in which the deputies of the "two sessions" were in distress and Comrade Zhao Baohao was killed. The name of the project is "Ma zi no. 3" - 1930 is the year of the horse, so it is called "horse character"; as for "no. 3", there seems to be no saying, it may be a randomly designated code name, or there may be another no. 1 and no. 2 projects in this year.

With the white terror situation at that time, it was difficult to spy on such top-secret intelligence within the enemy. After a month of this work, there was still no progress, and the central authorities had no choice but to suspend the investigation of the "Mazi No. 3" case. This shelving is twenty years. In November 1949 and May of the following year, the Central Ministry of Social Affairs and the Ministry of Public Security issued instructions to Shanghai to investigate two batches of historically unsolved cases, one of which was "Mazi No. 3". Therefore, the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau set up the "Historical Unsolved Case Investigation Office", which set up six special case teams under it, and designated the fourth group to undertake the case.

2. The first round of investigation

On May 28, 1950, the Fourth Task Force of the "Office of Historical Unsolved Cases" (i.e., the Office of Historical Unsolved Cases) held its first case analysis meeting.

The "suspension office" is a temporary investigative body whose members are drawn from the Social Department of the East China Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau, and the Organizational Section of the Shanghai Municipal CPC Committee. The leader of the group, Hong Siyu, was a native of Shanghai and had been an intelligence officer of the UNDERGROUND PARTY of the Communist Party before the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression; after the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he withdrew to the garrison of the New Fourth Army headquarters in Maolin, Anhui Province, to engage in hoeing and defending the work, and after the victory of the War of Resistance, he was ordered to return to Shanghai to continue to engage in intelligence work. On the eve of liberation, his identity was exposed again, and he was wounded while being pursued by the enemy, and the organization arranged for him to hide in the outskirts of Shanghai to recuperate. Due to poor medical conditions and worsening of his injuries, if it were not for the organization's admission to the "Guangci Hospital" after the liberation of Shanghai, he would have had to be amputated even if he did not die. Hong Siyu's injury was not healed until after the founding ceremony, just when the "hanging office" was opened, and comrades who were politically reliable and familiar with business were urgently needed, and Hong Siyu was appointed as the leader of the fourth task force. The four members of his group are all members of the Communist Party of China, Liang Renzhong and Song Yougu are public security cadres who have gone south, Cai Weixin is a reconnaissance officer of the Songhu detachment of the New Fourth Army, and Zhang Furen is a criminal police officer of the old police station.

Hong Siyu briefed the four subordinates on the relevant case of "Ma Zi No. 3," and some people asked whether they could access the archives of the central government's investigation of the case twenty years ago for reference. Hong Siyu did not know whether the case had been filed in that year, and director Yang, the leader of the "suspension office," had not given any written materials when he handed it over, and of course, their current investigation must establish a file. Director Yang clearly instructed: After the case is concluded, all materials must be handed over, and each member of the special case team must sign it in person, and Director Yang will personally seal it on the spot, and then send it to Beijing. Not only "Ma Zi No. 3", but also other cases undertaken by the special case team have also been handled in this way.

The crowd then understood that this task was not generally difficult, so they had to feel the stones to cross the river and take one step at a time. The first step is to analyze the case, and after some discussion, several people focused on one point: What was the reason for Zhao Baohao's unfortunate death? Did the enemy suspect that he had been "wounded on the spot" a month earlier, or was he later detected by the enemy during a secret investigation on behalf of the organization?

After repeated discussions, it is difficult to make a judgment for a while. Therefore, it was decided to investigate the scene of Zhao Baohao's death on June 18, 1930. This investigation can be carried out in two steps at the same time, one is to check the enemy file, and the other is to find witnesses at the scene to understand in person. The five investigators were divided into two groups, Zhang Furen, Song Yougu, and Liang Renzhong went to investigate the enemy files, and Hong Siyu and Cai Weixin investigated the scene when Zhao Baohao was killed.

Let's start with Zhang Furen three. They went to the city bureau archives to inquire, and the administrator said that the enemy files that had been taken over were countless, and that they had been sorting and classifying since July, and there were not enough people, and they also found hundreds of college students who had passed the political examination to help, and they worked gray every day, and they only roughly divided a silhouette until now. The information you want to consult is of the military category, not in the police file taken over by the city bureau, and you have to go to the military for help. The three of them went straight to the Songhu Garrison Headquarters of the Chinese People's Liberation Army on Hainan Road in Hongkou District. The receiving officer listened to the investigator explain his intentions, saying that the military enemy file was indeed taken over by us, and that the suburban warehouses were piled up like mountains and had not yet been sorted out. Besides, there may also be military secrets involved in this, and the introduction letter of the Municipal Public Security Bureau alone is not enough, so we have to go to the East China Military Region (the predecessor of the Nanjing Military Region) and ask the Political Department to stamp it. What the other party said was reasonable, but it was not deliberately embarrassing, but the investigation of the three investigators obviously could not be carried out.

The group of Hong Siyu and Cai Weixin went relatively smoothly. Twenty years ago, the Kuomintang Songhu Police Headquarters was located in Longhua Ancient Town, on the southwest side of downtown Shanghai, and the reconnaissance brigade had three squadrons stationed at Fenglin Bridge, Caojiadu, and Zhabei. However, Zhao Baohao's direct subordinate detachment had nothing to do with the reconnaissance brigade and was directly commanded by the Security Command, which was stationed in an abandoned Taoist temple at the mouth of the town on the south side of Longhua Town. Hong Siyu and Cai Weixin went to Longhua Town to inquire about it, and the Taoist temple had been destroyed in the war after the outbreak of the War of Resistance, and after the Japanese army occupied Shanghai, the Songhu Garrison Headquarters was gone, and the Post-War Kuomintang Garrison Headquarters was set up in Hongkou. However, the investigators were looking for people rather than buildings at this moment, and Hong and Cai still went to the Longhua police station according to the original plan, and learned that there was an old man surnamed Wu in the town who had been the gatekeeper of the collective dormitory of the detective detachment directly under the Security Command.

Old Man Wu is seventy-three years old, his body looks good, and his memory is not wrong. He worked as a concierge for his subordinate detachment for three years, received a meager monthly salary, belonged to the hired workers, did not participate in any gang party in his lifetime, and after liberation, his component was designated as the "urban poor". But this "poor man" lived a life more nourishing than that of a petty capitalist, because his five children were all well-known doctors or senior engineers— four sons were well-known doctors or senior engineers, and the daughter was an employee of the only women's bank in Shanghai, married to a British expert. The old man ate and dressed without worry, worried that the days were too plain, I heard that the two people in front of him were specially understood by the city to understand the gun battle of the Songhu Police Headquarters twenty years ago, and they suddenly came to work hard, busy making tea and handing over cigarettes and snacks.

According to Old Man Wu, at nearly ten o'clock that morning, he was sorting out the letters and newspapers that had just been delivered by the postman, when Yan Wangshi, the military judge of the Military Justice Department, "Live Yan Luo", suddenly arrived with four agents. "Living Yan Luo" was originally notorious, and it was the most vicious and cruel method in the center of the military judges of the Military Justice Department, so it got such a nickname. Of the four agents, two of them had been seen by Old Man Wu, and Zhao Baohao had been sent back by those two agents when he was discharged from the hospital. There is also a small Guo, who is a special agent inspector of the first squadron of the detective brigade stationed at Fenglin Bridge. Xiao Guo often came to this detachment dormitory to drink with a few fox friends, going in and out a lot, and Old Man Wu also recognized it. This person was usually quite polite to Old Man Wu, calling him "Uncle Grandpa" in the Wuxi dialect. This time, it was also he who greeted Old Man Wu first and inquired whether Xiao Zhao was in the dormitory. There were two members of the investigation detachment surnamed Zhao, and Old Man Wu asked which one it was, and the other party said that it was the one who had been shot last month. Old Man Wu said that he hadn't paid attention to whether Xiao Zhao was out, and he should be there.

In fact, this day Zhao Baohao went outside, but it was early in the morning when Old Man Wu went out when he was making a coal ball stove in the corner of the guard room, and Old Man Wu did not see it. After the gun battle, the Military Justice Department investigated Zhao Baohao's whereabouts that day, and Old Man Wu heard that Zhao went to the tea house after leaving the dormitory in the morning, and then he did not know where he went. Originally, Zhao Baohao had a chance to escape this disaster, but unfortunately, when the "Living Yan Luo" party was about to leave, he came back from outside!

Zhao Baohao was supposed to have returned from Longhua Town, holding an open bag of sesame crisp candy in his hand, and was eating it as he walked. At this time, the "Living Yan Luo" party stopped him, but they had not yet pulled out their guns. At first, Old Man Wu didn't pay attention to what several people were saying, but later Zhao's voice grew louder, and Old Man Wu, who was sweeping the floor, raised his head and looked over to that side. Only to hear Zhao say to Xiao Guo, "You say I'm a communist?" Is there any evidence?" As he spoke, a pair of eyes swept around, glancing at Old Man Wu standing next to the guard room and a scavenger sweeping the floor across the road, suddenly sneering, "Huh! Xiao Guo, I see that Nong is really worthy of the name of the thirteen points - Wuxi thirteen points! ”

Xiao Guo is a Wuxi native, don't look at it as a secret agent, there are quite some feminine elements in his temperament, usually he likes to sing tin opera, and the anti-string wind and turmoil are only wonderful. Maybe it is too deep into the play, bringing the behavior on the stage to life, so people call it "thirteen o'clock" behind their backs. This master was very annoyed with this nickname, and once let out a word, and whoever dared to call him that again would be rude to whomever he wanted. Now that Zhao Baohao had called him "Wuxi Thirteen Points" in a high-profile manner, he was naturally furious. However, before he could have a seizure, "Living Yan Luo" opened his mouth: "Xiao Zhao, letting you obediently follow us is to give you face, since you toast and don't eat and eat the penalty wine, then you can't help it - brothers, handcuff him!" ”

As soon as the words fell, Old Man Wu only saw a puff of smoke rising in the middle of those seven or eight meters away, and almost at the same time, someone cried out in horror. It turned out that Zhao Baohao threw the packet of crisp candy in his hand towards the secret agent who rushed in front of him. I don't know if he mixed lime or something like that in the bag of shortening, but anyway, as soon as the shortbread shot, the two agents who were ready to handcuff people were already covering their eyes with their hands and screaming. Suddenly, Zhao Baohao had already pulled out his pistol, strangled the neck of a screaming guy with his left elbow and blocked it in front of him as a human shield, shooting at "Living Yan Luo", Xiao Guo and others. Those few were also gun experts, and at the moment scattered to look for concealment, "Live Yan Luo" and Xiao Guo sneaked into the guard room, and the other one was half a beat slower and was shot in the head by Zhao Baohao. Yan and Guo fired back, and I don't know who it was, but they disregarded the safety of their companions and opened fire on the "human shield"! The consequence of this shot was that the bullet penetrated the chest of the "shield" and then shot into Zhao Baohao's body, and the two fell to the ground together.

Zhao Baohao was seriously injured and was unable to return fire, so he raised his pistol with all his strength and pulled the trigger at his temple!

The witnesses to this scene, in addition to Old Man Wu, there was also one person- Xue Lame, the scavenger sweeping the road. However, Xue Lame Zi had died of illness the year before, and his son Xiao Xue still lived in the town and ran a small department store. The three investigators went to visit according to old man Wu's instructions.

The thirty-three-year-old Owner Xue confirmed Old Man Wu's claims, and his father came home on the day of the incident to talk about it, praising Mr. Zhao as a tough guy. At that time, everyone in the town was rumored that zhao Baohao, who had cut himself off, was a communist, and he added fuel to the matter of how he had a shootout with the secret agents of the Fenglin Bridge No. 1 Squadron. The investigator asked the owner of the shop, how did the townspeople know that the agents were a squadron? Xue replied that this was said by the police at the town police station. During the Republic of China, the scavengers were managed by the police station, and Xue Lame's salary was received at the town police station. The day after the incident was the day of the paycheck, and when his father went to collect his salary, the whole police station was talking about it.

According to the analysis of the special case team, according to the division of duties of the Songhu Police Command at that time, the investigation brigade was responsible for investigating cases that the military believed needed to intervene. However, the investigation brigade only takes charge of the investigation, and after arresting the target, it must be handed over to the Military Justice Department for disposal. According to the statements of Old Man Wu and the owner of the Shop Xue, it was the Military Justice Department who went to the dormitory of the investigation detachment to arrest Zhao Baohao, and it seems that the case should be undertaken by the Military Justice Department. In view of the fact that at least two of the agents involved in the arrest were Zhao Baohao's escorts when he was discharged from the hospital, investigators tended to believe that after the "Dekang Hospital" incident on Chengdu Road, the Military Justice Department did not lift its suspicions about Zhao Baohao, although it was internally declared that Zhao Baohao was "encountered by the Communist Party and gloriously hung up", but in fact only a smoke bomb was released, intended to paralyze the parties in order to secretly investigate him. On June 18, the enemy must have found evidence, so he went to arrest people.

If the above speculation is true, Zhao Baohao has always been under the surveillance of the enemy. This raises the question of whether Zhao Baohao's information transmitted to the organization through the underground traffic officers before the accident asking for the implementation of the "Plan Four" was detected by the enemy? The special case group studied this repeatedly, and finally denied it -- when the "Living Yan Luo" party went to the dormitory of the investigation detachment to arrest him, it was obvious that they did not know where Zhao was going, which at least proved that no one should be following zhao when he passed information to the organization.

So how did the "Living Yan Luo" discover Zhao Baohao's flaws?

3. Find "Living Yan Luo"

The next day, the task force began to investigate the whereabouts of "Living Yan Luo." The investigator had asked Old Man Wu before, and the old man said that he had never seen him since the gun battle that day, the man with the surname Guo had not come, and the members of the dormitory had not mentioned these two people again.

The investigators believed that it was possible for the General Preparation Command to give the "living Yan Luo" a punishment. Five agents went to catch a man, and the target still had a gunshot wound on the shoulder, not only failed to catch the live mouth. He also suffered one death and two injuries (the secret agent who was shot by his own people and shot through the wounds was killed, but did not die), this craft is really too tide, do not deal with that after who is willing to "fight forward to die and serve his life"? But if you want to say that Yan was killed at this point, it is estimated that it will not be enough. If you want to find the whereabouts of "Living Yan Luo", you have to visit Longhua Ancient Town.

This line of thinking is correct. Although twenty years have passed, the world of white clouds and dogs has changed, and the security headquarters can be moved, but the residents of the ancient town are still those. As soon as the investigator went to the town police station to say what he meant, he immediately obtained a message: Shen Hunchback, who sold cake dumplings, may know the whereabouts of "Live Yan Luo", and his cake stall head has been placed opposite the gate of the Security Headquarters all year round, and everyone in the town knows that "Live Yan Luo" loves to eat cake balls the most, and every morning Shen Hunchback is specially reserved for him.

Today, 60 meters away, Shen Hunchback is still selling cake dumplings, but it has changed its stalls to mobile vendors. Longhua Town is not large, and the investigators have found him after wandering the streets for a while. Sure enough, he knew where the "Living Yan Luo" had gone after the bloody incident.

It is said that Commander Xiong heard that he had dropped something, and then he imprisoned "Living Yan Luo" and Guo Fengyun (Xiao Guo) and shackled them, and internally discussed that it seemed that the heads of these two were going to be taken by Commander Xiong to sacrifice the flag. However, the final disposition was thunder and rain: the two were expelled from the military, and "Living Yan Luo" was transferred to Jiangsu No. 2 Prison as a jailer.

Guo Fengyun was not so lucky, he opened things, and went to find a job to make a living.

Jiangsu No. 2 Prison is located in the east of Caohejing Town, commonly known as Caohejing Prison. "Living Yan Luo" was a military judge, and after going to the prison, people felt that he had to go to three shifts to be a jailer, so they let him become a procurer. This master was also able to let go, and he did not think that the price was cheap, and he actually wore a police uniform and rode a broken bicycle from Caohejing to Longhua to visit a group of colleagues, of course, he did not forget to continue to enjoy the cake dumplings of Shen Camel. Shen Hunzi used to be cared for by the "Living Yan Luo", and for many years he was not oppressed by the hooligans in the town, which would read a love free reception. Yan's encounter was revealed when eating cake dumplings.

The investigators were overjoyed. At the beginning of the liberation of the old Shanghai prison system, it was taken over by the receiving office of the Shanghai Military Control Commission Court, and the prisons and detention centers were all managed by the court's labor reform work committee (changed to the public security system in May 1951). Immediately went to the court, and when asked, the receptionist said that Caohejing Prison was destroyed by Japanese bombing later in "August 13". Hong Siyu and the others were greatly disappointed, but fortunately, another retained old official provided a situation that made their faces turn cloudy and clear--Caohejing Prison was only in ruins after several days of bombing. The first day was hit by a dud bomb, and the authorities received the report and urgently ordered the rescue of the file, releasing the prisoners who had been sentenced to less than five years in prison, and the prisoners who had been sentenced to five to ten years in prison were sent to the army the next day as porters. That night, a cadre of prisoners worked overtime to pack the files and transferred them by truck overnight to Beixinjing Prison (that is, the Second Prison directly under the Jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice and Administration). Therefore, the old files of Caohejing Prison were accepted after liberation.

At the moment, this part of the archives was retrieved, and what Shen Hunzi said was not false, and Yan Wangshi, the "living Yan Luo", went to Caohejing Prison on July 2, 1930 to report, and after three days as a jailer, he changed to a procurer. In March 1936, Yan offered to resign and was approved, and after that, he had no relationship with the prison.

At this moment, a group of investigators narrowed their eyes widely. Zhang Furen, a veteran criminal policeman, suggested: "Or, try to catch medicine according to the old formula -- go to Caohejing Town to visit and see if there are any jailers who served in Caohejing Prison and so on?"

On May 30, the special case team visited Caohejing Town. When I arrived at the town police station, people looked like uncertain prophets, and Tian Tian, the deputy director of the office who received the investigators, immediately took out a book of materials from the file cabinet and said that several of you should know about it. Originally, at the beginning of the liberation of Shanghai, the Municipal Military Control Commission issued a circular requiring all personnel who had participated in the special constitution of the party, government, military, and police and the reactionary meeting to register with the designated institutions. As soon as the notice came out, there were quite a few people who went to the Caohejing Town police station to register, and the most of them were the jailers of Jiangsu No. 2 Prison. When the prison was built, no housing was prepared for the guards, not even a dormitory, only a few duty rooms where temporary accommodation was available. Therefore, a cadre of jailers, whether they have small families or bachelors, go to the town to rent private houses to live. After the "August 13" prison disintegration, some of the jailers did not want to retreat with the army, stayed in the town to find their own way out, at this time, they are already considered to be the old residents of Caohejing. Hong Siyu and other investigators visited these people separately and found the following situation --

After Yan Wangshi came to Caohejing Prison, because he was a foreigner, the prison could not stay, so he had to rent a house in the town. At first, Yan had to make a few complaints from time to time, but after a while, he found that the prison did not treat him badly, and although the procurer was not a "long" and took the salary of an ordinary jailer, he had a lot of oil and water, because he had the choice of which shop to purchase the daily consumables of the prison. Other than that, the daily consumption of hundreds of prisoners in prisons alone is a good business. As a result, the business owners in the town have co-opted the "Yan Procurement Office Official". Yan Wangshi studied law and politics in his early years and knew nothing about business and trade. But this master is quite clever, no teacher, and after two months, he has figured out a set of ways to seek personal gain from it. Half a year later, he already had three mistresses in the town, two of whom were the proprietresses of rice and oil sauce shops, and the other was Jiang's widow, who ran a coal fuel shop. After Jiang Widow hooked up with Yan, she simply let Yan quit the rented house and live in her own home.

After liberation, Jiang's widow still lived in the town of Caohejing, but she no longer had a fuel business, but teased Sun Yi to raise her for a long time. The investigators came to visit, and The widow Jiang was cold when she saw five members of the gong family with extraordinary temperament coming at once, and she was suddenly shocked! Because if she thinks about it in detail, she is qualified to eat a few days of free meals in places such as the training brigade -- her deceased husband was a gang leader and bully in his early years, and if he had not died of illness a few years earlier, it would have been inevitable to go to the execution ground after liberation and be shot; She herself had participated in the "Consistent Tao" and had lived with at least three traitors during the War of Resistance. Hearing the uninvited guest, she made her intention clear, and her hanging heart was put down: "How many gentlemen do you want to inquire about that surname Yan?" He left Caohejing more than ten years ago!"

The "living Yan Luo" is greedy for money and lust, and this master has long looked forward to Shu, and it is difficult to satisfy his greed by earning extra money just by relying on the convenience of the procurers. So I started another brain. One night in late February 1936, a small, middle-aged man from Jiang's widow's fuel shop spoke Pudong native language and called himself Lin. This constituted a language barrier for Yan Wangshi, a native of Jiangxi, but fortunately, with Widow Jiang as an interpreter, he understood the other party's intentions: Among the prisoners serving sentences at Caohejing Prison, there was a rapist Zhang Agen who was sentenced to five years in prison, and this person had many friends in the jianghu and was regarded as the boss. They did not want Boss Zhang to stay in prison and suffer hardships, and wanted to ask "Living Yan Luo" to help them and try to let him go. Of course, the advantage is indispensable, the other party immediately took out five two (sixteen two old scales) gold bars, and promised to be thankful after the success of the matter.

Yan Wangshi was a military judge, and this kind of thing had happened a lot before, so he didn't make a fuss, only asking when the other party planned to pick up people. The other party said: "From tomorrow onwards, there will be people waiting in Caohejing Town for five consecutive days. You just have to bring him into town and be picked up at any time. Rest assured, in case bad luck is discovered, he will also insist that he escaped on his own and had nothing to do with others. ”

The prison has to dispatch a human trailer to purchase ingredients every day, of course, this job will not let the procurers do it themselves, Yan Wangshi imitated his predecessor, and went to the prison area to drive a few prisoners out. Taking this opportunity to release a prisoner was as easy as Yan Wangshi was concerned. Escaping a misdemeanor in prison was not a big deal in those days. Yan Wangshi knew this, so he dared to nod.

After the prisoner escaped, Yan returned to the prison to report to the warden Hu Renqing, who only said that "in the future, we should pay more attention to taking the prisoners out", and casually instructed the secretary to submit it to Shangfeng in the name of the prison.

The next day, Yan Wangshi received a few live chickens and ducks from his hometown in Jiangxi, so he asked Jiang Widow to go to the Longhua Garrison Headquarters for a run and give them to several colleagues in the Military Justice Department. When widow Jiang returned, she brought an official letter, saying that the Military Justice Department was just about to send someone to Caohejing Prison, and when she saw her pass, she asked her to take it back and ask Yan to hand it over to the warden tomorrow.

Yan Wangshi took it apart and looked at it, and a cold sweat broke out. It turned out that Zhang Agen was a pseudonym of Liang Liulong, a famous amphibious river and ocean thief in Fengxian, who went to Qibao Town to run an errand a few years ago, met a beautiful young woman, and her lustful heart suddenly rose, and she was pulled into the roadside woods to rape her, and was discovered by several security guards who were patrolling by and took it down on the spot. Of course, he would not confess that he was a habitual bandit Liang Liulong, and casually said a name to cope. A few days ago, the investigation brigade of the Security Command inadvertently obtained this information while handling other cases, and carried out the Civil and Military Justice Department, which in turn approved the transfer of the prisoner's detention area, Caohejing Prison.

It turns out that this lord is such a character! Yan Wangshi knew that he had run into a big disaster, and this time he would definitely not be able to fool around, and when the Lin Dwarf came to him to negotiate this deal, he promised that if Yan was implicated in this, he would go to Pudong to find him, and he would help arrange a hiding place. Now, I have to take this step.

The next day, Yan Wangshi offered his resignation to the warden, pretending to have received a letter from a relative in his hometown who was serving in the province, saying that he had sent an envoy from the county magistrate on his behalf, asking him to return to his hometown within seven days to take office. The warden did not doubt that he had him, and Yan Wangshi completed the resignation procedures on the same day, did not dare to delay for a moment, and immediately left. Widow Jiang had feelings and righteousness, left her business, and accompanied Yan to Nanqiao Town, Fengxian County, Pudong to find Lin Dwarf. Lin Dwarf ordered a table of wine and dishes from the restaurant to shock them, and three of the accompanying guests were jianghu characters at first glance. After the meal, Jiang's widow returned to Caohejing.

Yan Wangshi's estimate was indeed correct, only three days had passed. Things are worn out. Widow Jiang was handcuffed and taken to Caohejing Prison for on-the-spot interrogation. Widow Jiang was married to a gang bully husband, knew a little about the rules on the rivers and lakes, and knew that if this matter was solid, it would not only be detrimental to Lao Yan, but also harm herself, so she insisted that she had handed over the official document to Lao Yan according to the instructions of the military judge, and she did not know anything else. The police really couldn't do anything about her, and although her husband was dead, a group of gang disciples were still there, and when they heard that the master's mother had been summoned, they wanted to make a gesture. Jiang was soon released, and since then, she has never seen Yan Wangshi again, nor has she heard anything about him.

After listening to Jiang Widow's statement, Hong Siyu, Liang Renzhong, and other investigators of the special case team were greatly disappointed, and they wondered if this clue was broken. It seems that I have to go to Fengxian South Bridge for a run, but I don't know if the forest dwarf is still there. After all, during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Pudong area experienced a chaotic situation of "having a gun is the king of grass heads", and it is difficult to say whether a master like Lin Dwarf is still alive.

However, when Widow Jiang saw this look on her face, she actually had a flash of inspiration in her mind and asked timidly, "How many of your gentlemen want to track down lao Yan's whereabouts?"

As soon as the crowd heard that there was a drama, they asked Jiang if he knew the information of Lin Dwarf and others. Widow Jiang said that the forest dwarf had not seen, but one of the three jianghu characters who had eaten together was called "Master Xu", and on the day of the Sanlonghua Temple Fair in early March this year, she went to longhua Temple to play, and saw several craftsmen and masters working in the temple, one of them looked familiar with his face, and in retrospect, wasn't that Master Xu?

A group of investigators went straight to Longhua Temple, and the supervisor turned over the record book, saying that there were indeed plasterers working in the temple during the temple fair, which was found through the town's referral shop (job agency), and the temple did not know the specific information of the craftsmen and masters. Immediately went to find the head shop, and finally figured out that this person was not surnamed Xu, but surnamed Qi, and lived in the town of Fengxian Nanqiao.

On May 31, investigators went to Fengxian South Bridge. When I went to the county public security bureau, Lin Dwarf was indeed dead. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he actually participated in the anti-Japanese armed forces spontaneously formed by the people in the Pudong area, and even became a guerrilla division.

The craftsman surnamed Qi huosheng told the investigators that Lao Yan had long since died. On the night of Yan Wangshi's arrival in Nanqiao Town, the habitual bandit Liang Liulong set up a banquet at the Zhang Weng Temple to pay his thanks. During the banquet, the drunken Boss Liang did not know which of Yan's words was annoyed, and pulled out his pistol and killed Yan. After waking up drunk, think about it, and strictly order his subordinates not to leak the wind. According to the rules of the underworld, Yan Wangshi was his savior, and this matter spread to the jianghu, saying that he had killed the benefactor with one shot, so how could he mix in the jianghu after that? Boss Liang instructed his men to let loose the wind, saying that Mr. Yan had died of an acute illness after drinking, and then held a grand funeral. The tomb was made by Qi Huosheng and a few craftsmen and masters, and it is still there.

The investigators went to check it out, and sure enough. This clue is broken.

Fourth, find clues

On June 1, five investigators met to study their work ideas. After some discussion, everyone believed that the originally chosen direction of investigation was not wrong, and although the chief evil element Yan Wangshi was dead, there were a total of five people who accompanied Yan to arrest Zhao Baohao at that time, except for the dead one, guo Fengyun and two other agents. Down, the task force should continue to stare in this direction to track down and use these three people as a breakthrough.

According to the concierge, Old Man Wu, Xiao Guo was an agent of the first squadron of the reconnaissance brigade, and the other three he did not know, but he was sure that they were not directly subordinate to the detachment. Then try your luck at Maplewood Bridge, where the original squadron is stationed.

In 1920, the Songhu Protectors made He Fenglin requisition more than 100 acres of land south of Zhaojiabang, built a road leading to Shenjiabang Road (now Medical College Road), and built a bridge in Zhaojiabang. He Fenglin named this road and bridge as Fenglin Road and Fenglin Bridge in his own name. In July 1927, Fenglin Bridge and Fenglin Road were renamed Fenglin Bridge and Fenglin Road. At that time, because the Shanghai Special Municipal Government was located on the adjacent Traffic Road (present-day Pingjiang Road), Fenglin Bridge became the political center of Shanghai's Huajie. The Kuomintang regime set up a prison in Fenglinqiao, and in 1928, Fenglinqiao Prison was changed to the Detention Center of the Military Justice Department of the Songhu Police Headquarters. In 1930, the dormitories of the members of the first squadron of the Reconnaissance Brigade of the Security Command were set up in a forcibly requisitioned garden house near the former Maplewood Bridge Prison.

Investigators learned from the police station that the garden house was currently in use by the People's Liberation Army Songhu Security Command. So, who was the concierge here twenty years ago, and was it the same as the situation in the detective squad dormitory? The chief of the police station who received them was a cadre from the south, who did not understand the situation, but there were two retained old policemen in the station, and twenty years ago, those two happened to be patrol officers, passing by the house no less than seven or eight times a day, and they were impressed that the concierge there was hired during the day and rotated by the detective team at night. There are two people in the concierge, each of whom takes turns to work one day, twelve hours. The two concierges, one surnamed Zhang and the other surnamed He, are residents living nearby. Old Man Zhang died last year, and Old Man He is still alive.

Soon, Old Man He came to the police station. The scout's luck is still good, Lao He not only has a strong body, his brain power does not seem to show signs of degradation, after hearing the intentions, he said that the little Guo you several gentlemen said, named Guo Fengyun, a Wuxi man, this person is very shrewd, sophisticated, and very snobbish, as long as he is an official, no matter which department the official is, he will wag his tail around people like a pug, and the military judge "Living Yan Luo" is very important to him.

June 18, 1930 - the reason why I remember so clearly is because on that day the old He family added Ding Zengkou, ushered in the first baby boy of the third generation, that day it was Lao He's turn to be on duty, the family specially came to tell the good news, old He Daxi, according to the excitement, turned around at the door, as long as they saw people coming in and out, whether it was a secret agent in the accommodation or an outsider who came to visit, regardless of the chief sergeant, they all smiled and groaned and greeted. At about nine o'clock in the morning, the telephone in the door room suddenly rang loudly, Lao He answered, and the voice of the guest side people who sounded known as "bending bazi" (that is, speaking like a bend) came out of the headphones (at that time, Shanghai referred to the people in the foreign port as "guest people"): "I am Lao Yan of the Military Justice Department!" You immediately call Xiao Guo to answer the phone!"

Xiao Guo didn't know whether to rest or have a mission at night that day, stayed in the dormitory and did not go out, Lao He came out with a tin mouth iron horn. According to the regulations, Lao He had to avoid this time, and he had to close the door when he left, so he didn't hear Xiao Guo say anything to "Living Yan Luo", and through the glass window, he only saw this boy frequently nodding his head like a chicken pecking rice. After hanging up the phone, Xiao Guo returned to the dormitory. In a few moments, I saw him and two other detective team members, Li Liansheng and Rong Fugui, driving a three-wheeled motorcycle with a "big license plate" and honking the horn vigorously as they drove. Lao He immediately opened the door, and the motorcycle disappeared.

This time, they never came back. Later, Lao He heard that something had happened to them, and while arresting a communist, Li Liansheng and Rong Fugui were injured, and the other did not know whether it was the Military Justice Department or the chief of the reconnaissance brigade, who lost his life, and both "Living Yan Luo" and Xiao Guo were stripped of their errands and did not know where they were. After that, Lao He never saw them again.

The task force believes that the information provided by Lao Ho is very valuable, Yan is likely to be the person in charge of the investigation of the "Dekang Hospital" case on May 18, if there is an investigation team in this investigation, the leader is Yan, and Guo, Li, Rong, and the agent surnamed Jin who died on June 18 are the members of the team. However, judging from the information provided by Old Man Wu, the concierge of the reconnaissance detachment, Zhao Baohao was not monitored after returning to Longhua, and his going out and receiving friends were not restricted. However, why, a month after the "Dekang Hospital" case, did the enemy suddenly decide to arrest Zhao Baohao?

The investigators analyzed it and believed that it might be due to the following reasons: First, although the enemy had restored Zhao Baohao's freedom, his examination was not completely over, and it was still quietly carried out in secret. Second, the enemy's examination of Zhao Baohao has indeed ended, and Zhao has basically passed the pass. However, on or a day or two before June 18, the enemy unexpectedly obtained reliable information enough to overturn the conclusions of the previous review, confirming that their suspicions of Zhao Baohao at the beginning of the "Dekang Hospital" case were well-founded, so they decided to take arrest action. Third, the arrest of Zhao Baohao was not directly related to the "Dekang Hospital" case, and Zhao accidentally revealed flaws when completing the top-secret mission given to him by Mr. Zeng on behalf of the organization and asking for the implementation of the "Fourth Plan", and was discovered by the enemy.

So, which is more likely? Investigators tend to the second type. Just think, if the enemy had already discovered Zhao Baohao's suspicions in the "Dekang Hospital" case, he would certainly have known that Zhao was not a key figure, and that most of the agents' activities were single-line contacts, and even if Zhao Baohao was caught, it would be difficult to pose a fatal threat to the underground party organization of the CCP. The best way to deal with it should be to let the long line catch the big fish, rather than openly catch it. If Zhao had been found by the enemy on the morning of June 18 when he was at the junction with the secret traffic officer, the enemy should have taken similar measures. However, it turns out that after Zhao's sacrifice, the underground party organization was not destroyed, so the third possibility was not established. Moreover, even if the enemy really thinks that Zhao is a key figure in the underground party organization of the CPC and wants to arrest him, it should be an officer of the rank of director of the Military Justice Department of the Security Command who will organize the arrest.

In the end, the task force unanimously agreed that Zhao's sacrifice had nothing to do with the "Fourth Plan" and should be the action taken by the enemy to accidentally discover Zhao Baohao's doubts in the "Dekang Hospital" incident a month ago. Group leader Hong Siyu immediately reported to Director Yang on the current progress of the task force, and Director Yang agreed with the analysis of the task force and asked the task force to redouble its efforts and complete its mission as soon as possible.

At eight o'clock in the morning of June 3, investigator Liang Renzhong was the first to arrive at the office and received a call from the Longhua Town police station. When the special case group went to Longhua Town a few days ago to investigate, it asked the police station to assist in investigating the information related to the five agents who arrested Zhao Baohao twenty years ago headed by "Living Yan Luo." The Longhua police attached great importance to it and specially organized a contingent of more than thirty people composed of people's police, public security activists, cadres of neighborhood committees, and retired progressives to visit separately. This move has really received results, and now people have called to inform them that the whereabouts of two of the five agents who were injured have been found out, one has changed his career to become a fortune teller and opened a fortune teller in Caohejing Town; the other has transformed into a jianghu artist, selling art in the suburbs of Shanghai all year round.

Investigators immediately dispatched and arrested the second offender on the same day. These two people were Li Liansheng and Rong Fugui, subordinates of Guo Fengyun, the special agent of the first squadron of the investigation brigade. On June 18, 1930, Guo, Li, and Rong, as well as the military justice department guard Lao Jin, accompanied Yan Wangshi to the dormitory of the reconnaissance detachment to arrest Zhao Baohao, lao Jin was shot dead by Zhao Baohao, Li and Rong were injured in the eyes by the lime powder thrown by Zhao Baohao, and Rong Fugui was even worse, and was taken hostage by Zhao Baohao as a human shield and shot, and the bullet happened to pass through the gap between the heart and lungs, leaving him with a life. Because the target was self-cutting, the clues were broken, and the losses suffered by his own side, Commander Xiong regarded it as "a great shame and great humiliation", but the aftermath of the death and injury agents was still quite generous, the pension of the deceased Lao Jin was allocated, the injured Li Liansheng and Rong Fugui were sent to the hospital for treatment, and a discharge fee was issued after discharge.

Li Liansheng's position at that time was in the upper wind outlet, and there was less lime entering the eyes, but his eyesight was impaired and he was not blind; Rong Fugui was unlucky, and he was shot in the chest when he was blind in both eyes. Both of them are from the military, and when the soldiers are like fish, if you talk about the skills of making a living, it is really a blank. Fortunately, after several years of detective work, there were a number of jianghu friends in Shanghai Beach, and some people saw that they were pitiful, so they introduced them to learn from their teachers. At that time, there was no "employment policy for the disabled", and the title of the disabled was also a contemptuous "disabled person", so the blind man's employment position had only two choices, either to be a fortune teller or to go to the bathhouse to give a massage to the bather. Rong Fugui wanted to learn massage, but the gunshot wound caused his hands to not be able to exert too much force, so he had to go to fortune telling. Fortunately, most of the brain melons who do secret agents are not wrong, and they are still relatively smart, learning what it is like, and Rong Fugui only learned for a year before he flew alone. He first rang the bell along the street to solicit business, and soon became a little famous, and set up a fortune-telling stall in the town. Because there were jianghu friends who held the scene and did a good job, after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, a frontage façade was laid down and a "rich and noble life hall" was opened.

The livelihood introduced to Li Liansheng by jianghu friends is to learn to sing "Little Hot Dim". "Little Hot Dim" is a traditional street rap art in the Jiangnan area, the late Qing Dynasty was corrupt, and there were many phenomena in society that oppressed the people to infringe on public rights and damage morality, and some rap artists with a sense of justice put this phenomenon into programs and sang on the streets as a means of attracting business (selling pear paste candy, etc.). Because the content of the program is too sensitive, it will inevitably alarm the government. The parties concerned evaded punishment on the pretext of their own infection and high fever fever and gibberish, so they were named "little hot dimwitted". Over time, a unique style of Wuqu opera was formed. Li Liansheng's development in singing "Little Hot Sleep" is not as good as that of the rich and noble to learn fortune telling, and for twenty years, he has always performed in the Suburban tour of Shanghai and worked as a wandering artist.

But now, whether it is a fortune teller or a wandering artist, they have all done their best. After the two were arrested, they confessed to their crimes -

At about 5:00 p.m. on May 18, 1930 (that is, after the "Dekang Hospital" shooting), Li and Rong were summoned by Xiao Guo and quickly went to the "Weicheng Hotel" opposite the "Guangren Hospital" in the public concession to report to Yan Wangshi. Yan instructed the three of them to secretly monitor Zhao Baohao, who was being treated with a gunshot wound in the hospital, and especially emphasized that the patrol room had sent people to "accompany" the ward day and night, and must pay attention not to expose their identities, after all, this is a public concession.

In this way, three agents were monitored at "Guangren Hospital" for three days. On the fourth day, the security command had negotiated with the patrol house, and Zhao Baohao was allowed to leave the hospital, and the three of them were taken to a small hospital opened by the French behind the Xujiahui Catholic Church for quarantine and examination. Yan Wangshi came once a day to listen to the report, and when he encountered any doubts, he went into the ward to talk directly with Zhao Baohao. Six days later, Yan Wangshi said that the Military Justice Department had concluded that Zhao Baohao had no problem and could lift the isolation and return to the dormitory of the Longhua Detective Detachment for recuperation.

Guo, Li, and Rong then returned to a squadron, and until June 18, they had not received any missions related to this matter, and Yan Wangshi had not appeared in front of them. On the morning of June 18, Xiao Guo suddenly informed Li and Rong that Judge Yan Jun had called and asked the three of them to report to the Military Justice Department immediately, estimating that there was an emergency messenger. The three of them then drove a three-wheeled motorcycle and rushed from Fenglin Bridge to Longhua. Yan Wangshi informed that the mission this time was to arrest Zhao Baohao, who had been examined last time, but did not explain the reason. The three agents did not ask much, and doing this was the rule. Also involved in the arrest was the Judge Advocate General's guard, Old Kim, who followed the gun battle.

The confessions of Li Liansheng and Rong Fugui confirmed the previous analysis of the task force and confirmed that Zhao Baohao had initially passed the enemy's examination. As for why the enemy suddenly arrested him a month later, it was probably because the conclusion of the review had changed. According to the principle of "one case and one case" in the Kuomintang secret service system, only in the same case will the same group of agents be used to continue to carry out the mission, which is conducive to confidentiality. From this investigator, the investigator judged that Zhao's murder would not have anything to do with the top-secret investigation he had been ordered by the organization. If that were the case, it would have been another group of agents who had arrested him.

A situation explained by Li Liansheng and Rong Fugui attracted the attention of the special case team: On the afternoon of May 19, 1930, a woman in her thirties with fashionable makeup but a cold face suddenly appeared in the surgical ward of "Guangren Hospital" and asked the ward janitor for a sign to visit the inpatient Zhao Baohao. The janitor naturally belonged to the first object of the secret service, and immediately hung a secret code of "someone visiting" in the window. Li Liansheng immediately followed. What surprised him was that this woman had unblocked the plainclothes sent by the patrol room to "accompany" Zhao Baohao in advance, and easily entered the ward, and the plainclothes immediately left and went to the window at the other end of the corridor of the ward to smoke. Li Liansheng wanted to pretend to admit that the ward was wrong and pushed the door to spy, but was discovered by the plainclothes and paced towards the door of the ward with his back to his hand. Li Liansheng had to go outside the ward to summon Rong Fugui, and the two discussed well, Li managed to wrap around the plainclothes, and Rong took the opportunity to break into the ward. Unexpectedly, when the two of them re-entered the ward, the woman just came out of Zhao Baohao's hospital room.

Rong Fugui immediately followed. Only to see the target out of the hospital, called a rickshaw to stop. Of course, Rong Fugui was familiar with this line of work, and he had already stored his bicycle in the hospital concierge in advance, and immediately rode to follow. I saw the rickshaw turn from Aiwenyi Road (now Beijing West Road) where the hospital was located to Dawangmiao Road (now Chengdu North Road), turn at Jing'an Temple Road (now Nanjing West Road), and stop at the mouth of Xizang Road (now Middle Xizang Road). The woman got out of the car and went to a stall in front of a small department store across the road to pick out goods. A tram "Dangdang" came, and the woman suddenly dropped the goods in her hand, and one turned and got on the tram. Originally, with the physique of the rich and noble, it was no problem to step on the bicycle to catch up with the tram, but in the middle of the way, it encountered a patrol to copy the target (blocking the road and searching the body), delaying the time, and when it was difficult to get out, the target had long been lost.

This confession is undoubtedly a clue for the task force. Who is this mysterious woman? Did her presence have anything to do with the subsequent turnaround in the case? Investigators analyzed this, first ruling out the possibility that the woman was a liaison officer sent by the underground party organization to connect with Zhao Baohao. When the leaders of the "Suspension Office" introduced the case of "Ma zi no. 3," they made it very clear that after the incident on May 18, Zhao Baohao was sent to the "Guangren Hospital" by the patrol room for less than an hour, and the organization had already assigned Mr. Zeng to go to the hospital to contact Zhao Baohao. The organization must have also expected that the Security Command would not be idle, and it would never be possible to use this method to make great contact with Zhao Baohao again. So, where did the mysterious woman come from? Friends and family visiting? Probably not, zhao Baohao had cut off contact with all his relatives and friends after being ordered to beat people inside the enemy. Moreover, if it is to visit, how can it be empty-handed, and it is better to mention one or two gifts. Moreover, the woman can also get rid of the "escort" of the patrol room, which is even more puzzling.

A group of investigators repeatedly studied and failed to say why. It has been suggested that, either in a different way, it is possible to investigate the people involved in the scene that witnessed the scene twenty years ago. But the question is, after all these years, where to find the person?

Hong Siyu, the leader of the special case team, thought of a way: Who was the plainclothes person who "accompanied" Zhao Baohao in the patrol room at that time, and could find clues by consulting the files of the Police Department of the Ministry of Public Concessions. The concession authorities attached great importance to the preservation of archives, and after the outbreak of the Pacific War, the archives of the public concession fell into the hands of the invading Japanese army and remained intact in the warehouse. After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the police archives of the concession were received by the Kuomintang regime and kept in the Shanghai Municipal Police Department. After the liberation of Shanghai, all archives were taken over and preserved by the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau. If the patrol room had recorded the case at that time, it would certainly have recorded the name of the "escort" plainclothes.

The next day, five investigators from the special case team went to the archives of the Municipal Public Security Bureau to check the police files of the former public concession. After a whole day of tossing and turning, I finally found the relevant records of the "Dekang Hospital" shooting. The record of the incident in the archives is simple, and since there is no more evidence, the Concession Police Department treated the case as a criminal case. The specific undertaking unit is the Criminal Department of chengdu road arrest room, sent to the hospital to monitor Zhao Baohao's plainclothes in the name of "escort", there are two people, Shan Zhengchao and Shi Qingquan, each of whom is on duty in shifts day and night. At four o'clock in the afternoon of the incident, the Kuomintang Security Command made representations, and on the fourth day, with the approval of the Public Concession Police Department, Zhao Baohao was discharged from the hospital.

Attached to the file is an English note, which, after being translated, answers the ins and outs of the mysterious woman for the investigators. The woman's name was Xing Meilan, and she was the widow of Qian Zuyi, one of the dead in the "Dekang Hospital" shooting and a major inspector of the Investigation Brigade of the Kuomintang Security Command. Qian has the identity of the Qing Gang, and on the day he was killed, Xing went to Longhua to ask for Xiong Shihui and asked for an explanation, but Commander Xiong refused to receive him. Xing thought that her husband had died suspiciously, so he thought of going to the only living person in the shooting to find out the situation, but this must be allowed by the Public Concession Police Department, so he asked Du Yuesheng, the leader of the Qing Gang, for help. Du Yuesheng called the Public Concession Police Department, and the Police Department approved such a note to the Chengdu Road Arrest House. The plainclothes detective hua tan who was on duty at the hospital received a notice from his superior in advance, did not block Xing, and even took the initiative to avoid it. As for what Xing and Zhao Baohao specifically talked about, there is no record in the archives - this is not the official business of the patrol room.

The special case group held that the secret mission that Zhao Baohao was engaged in at that time belonged to the nature of a secret agent, and it was said that he could only be competent after professional training, but with the actual situation of our party at that time, there was no condition at all to hold such a training class, and it was difficult to arrange for professional instructors to give him individual counseling. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that Zhao Baohao showed flaws in his conversation with Xing Meilan (of course, he did not realize it himself). If such a speculation holds, Xing Meilan will definitely react accordingly. Perhaps, this is why the enemy suddenly arrested Zhao a month later.

During the above analysis, the investigators found a suspicious point: it is said that Xing Meilan was a newly widowed widow, and when she went to the "Guangren Hospital", it was the day after her husband's death, and it should be Hot Filial Piety. However, in the confessions of Li Liansheng and Rong Fugui, she said that she was wearing a light green shirt and did not see any filial piety signs from head to toe. This was easy to point fingers at the time, how could a newly widow dressed like this? So the task force decided to investigate the woman's whereabouts, hoping to find clues from her.

There is no record of Xing Meilan's personal situation in the archives of the patrol room, nor is there any relevant information about the deceased Qian Zuyi, but only a reference to Zhao Baohao's personal information, saying that he is "a sergeant of the investigation team of the Songhu Security Headquarters." Then we had to find another way. The investigators deliberated and found a way to find a way - she was originally introduced by Du Yuesheng to the Public Concession Police Department, so let's check through this line.

On the eve of the liberation of Shanghai, Du Yuesheng had fled to Hong Kong, and the special case team could not find him to understand the situation. At first, they wanted to inquire about the whereabouts of Xing Meilan through the original gang members, Xingfu Qian Zuyi was a member of the Qing Gang, and since his wife was able to ask for Du Yuesheng's help after his death, it seemed that Qian Zuyi should have some popularity within the Qing Gang. Hong Siyu was about to make arrangements for the division of labor, when he suddenly saw that the investigator Zhang Furen seemed to have objections, so he asked Lao Zhang if he had another idea?

Zhang Furen is an underground party member who has been a criminal police officer in Shanghai Beach for many years and is the one of the five investigators in the special case team who is most familiar with the comprehensive situation in shanghai in the old days. When he was engaged in criminal investigation work before liberation, he had many dealings with the gang, and had several contacts with three Shanghai gang tycoons, Jin Jinrong, Du Yuesheng, and Zhang Xiaolin. Therefore, he knows more about the internal situation of the Green Gang. At this moment, he expressed his opinion, saying that if xing meilan's whereabouts were investigated by casting a wide net, it would take a lot of time and energy, and it would be better to take shortcuts in a targeted manner. So, how does this shortcut go? Zhang Furen said that he could ask a person named Huang Guodong.

On October 3, 1934, Huang Wenxiang, du Yuesheng's general accounting office, suddenly died of stroke. Before Du Yuesheng's early career, he worked as an apprentice in the "Zhang Hengda Fruit Land Cargo Shop" on the road in Shanghai's large wharf, and was a brother with Huang Wenxiang. With Du Yuesheng's jianghu righteousness, it is natural to have an explanation for Huang Wenxiang's funeral and posthumous affairs, in his words, not only to be worthy of the late master and brother, but also to leave an example for the jianghu people. In addition to assisting the Huang family in handling the funeral with dignity, Du Yuesheng also invited Huang Wenxiang's son Huang Guodong to the Du Mansion to inherit his father's position as the general ledger. The general ledger room of the Du Mansion is one of the most vulnerable places in the mansion to be snuggled by Du's family members, apprentices, and subordinates—everyone must be nodded to for money. As a result, the general ledger knows a few things about almost everything related to the gang inside and outside the mansion.

Zhang Furen and Huang's father and son are acquainted, and once they were neighbors, knowing that Huang Wenxiang often talked to his son about some gossip before his death to increase Huang Guodong's social experience. Zhang Furen believes that things like Qian Zuyi's death by a bullet and the derivative of his widow Xing Shi going to the Du Mansion for help, Huang Laozi will definitely tell Huang Guodong. Instead of looking for Clues from Xing everywhere, it is better to go directly to Huang Guodong to investigate. When the other investigators heard Zhang Furen say this, they all thought it was very much.

This job is naturally none other than Zhang Furen. At the moment, Lao Zhang, along with the investigators Cai Weixin and Song Yougu, went to huang Guodong for an external transfer. After Huang Guodong took over the position of the general ledger of his deceased father Du Mansion, he worked for sixteen years in one fell swoop. After the liberation of Shanghai, he was arrested and sentenced and imprisoned in Tilanqiao Prison (huang was a member of the CppcC Shanghai Committee in the 1980s). On June 4, the three investigators went to the prison, and when they asked, Huang heard his father talk about it, when he was a twenty-year-old youth. Four years later, his father died of illness, and after he took over the position of general ledger of du mansion, he met Xing Meilan twice. The first time was on a spring rainy afternoon in 1935, when a fashionable woman in her early thirties came to him with a note signed by Wan Molin, the housekeeper of the Du Mansion, to withdraw one hundred and fifty yuan from him, and the name of the recipient on the note was Xing Meilan. Later, he was told that this woman was the widow of Qian Zuyi, a major officer of the Security Command who was killed by the Communists on Chengdu Road four years ago.

Half a year later, Xing Meilan came to the Du Mansion again and brought one hundred and eighty yuan bills, saying that he was repaying the last loan and interest. Since there was no loan on the last withdrawal slip, Huang Guodong told her that she had to wait for the Wan Guan Certificate to make it clear that the borrower could receive the money. On this day, it happened that Wan Molin went out to run errands, and Du Yuesheng went to Tianmu Mountain in Zhejiang Province, and there was no way, so he had to wait until Wan Molin returned. Huang Guodong asked Dalong, a disciple of the Du clan who was on duty at the Du Mansion, to brew a cup of tea for the Xing clan, and it just so happened that he was fine, so he chatted with him for half an hour. Huang Guodong told investigators that he remembered Xing Meilan saying that her family lived in Huaxinfang, Yangshupu Road, Hudong. After Xing Meilan returned the money and left that day, Da long told Huang Guodong that this woman was a character and heard that it was related to the "Party Adjustment Section".

The information provided by Huang Guodong attracted the attention of the special task force. The so-called "Party Investigation Section", whose full name is "Party Affairs Investigation Section" of the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang, was founded in 1927 (another said to be the beginning of 1928), in 1932, the section was expanded into "Secret Service Headquarters", and in 1935 it was reorganized into "Party Affairs Investigation Department". In April 1937, the division was merged with the "Lixing Society" under dai Kasa's responsibility to form the "Bureau of Investigation and Statistics of the Military Commission of the National Government" (i.e., "Military Unification"), and the division was the first division. In March 1938, Chiang Kai-shek proposed at the Provisional National Congress of the Kuomintang (approved on the spot) to establish the "Bureau of Investigation and Statistics of the Central Executive Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang" on the basis of the "First Division of the Military Commission". At this point, the "central unification" that was on a par with "military unification" in history was formally formed. Although the organization has changed its title many times, such as "Secret Service Headquarters," "Standing Investigation Office," and "First Office of the Military Command Bureau," it has always been called the "Party Adjustment Section." After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and renamed it the "Central Bureau of Unification," the title of "Central Unification" replaced the "Party Adjustment Section."

Huang Guodong heard that Xing Meilan had a relationship with the "Party Investigation Section" in 1934, you know, since 1928, this "Party Investigation Section" is the most difficult opponent for the CCP to carry out secret activities in Shanghai, if Xing Shi is indeed related to the "Party Investigation Section", then is Zhao Baohao's sacrifice also related to the "Party Investigation Section"?

5. In-depth investigation

The next day, all five investigators of the special case team went out to inquire about The Huaxinfang on Yangshupu Road in Hudong, where Huang Guodong said that Xing was living at the time, and soon obtained xing Meilan's information.

Mr. and Mrs. Xing and Qian lived in a small Cantonese-style two-story building in The Lane, which was the property of the Xing family. Xing Meilan is a native of Yinxian County, Zhejiang Province, whose father came to Shanghai to do business in his early years and had a small development, and was one of the "Top Ten Brokers" in the Shanghai hardware wholesale industry. This small building was a gift from her father when Xing first married (circa 1925). Xing's first husband, Xiao Feng, was a fellow villager in Ningbo, and was a street runner under Lao Xing, who was said to have a particularly good business mind and was also handsome. Because he often went to the old Xing family, he came and went, and he was taken in by Xing Meilan, who was an operator in the "Huayang Delufeng Telephone Company", and soon got married. After marriage, Xiao Feng's life was good, but unfortunately, Xiao Feng's profession was to run around all year round to sell goods, contact with any environment, and accidentally contract tuberculosis. At that time, unless the disease was particularly strong in its own resistance, most patients could not escape the call of the god of death, but the length of time was short. Xiao Feng also failed to escape this fate, and after a year or two of marriage, he completed his life path.

After taking care of her husband's funeral, Xing Meilan did not return to her mother's house to live, and still lived in Huaxinfang. Two years later, when the Northern Expeditionary Army arrived in Shanghai, Xing Meilan jumped ship to work at the Shanghai Telephone Company under the jurisdiction of the "American International Telephone and Telegraph Company", and was still an operator. One night in the autumn of 1927, Xing Meilan was out of work, and on the way, she suddenly had abdominal pain and fell to the ground from her bicycle. It was already midnight and there was no one on the road. When I was about to pass out, I suddenly heard a sound of engines from far to near...

Waking up in the hospital, the doctor told her that it was an acute appendicitis attack, and that if it were not for the motorcycle rider who was brought to the hospital and paid a fee, the appendix might be perforated, and it would be life-threatening. This motorcyclist is Qian Zuyi.

A native of Yangjiang, Guangdong Province, Qian came to Shanghai in the spring of 1927 as a captain and officer of the Northern Expeditionary Army, when he was promoted to major and served in the reconnaissance brigade of the security command. The Xing father and daughter had their own rewards for him. After that, lao Xing, in line with the habits of a businessman, used the relationship of money to make several businesses, and moved the idea of tying Qian Zuyi firmly, so he asked someone to match him and let him and his daughter Xing Meilan have a husband and wife.

After Xing and Qian got married, Xing still worked for a telephone company. The two lived together for more than two years, and by the time Qian Zuyi had an accident in May 1930, Xing Meilan was said to have been pregnant for more than two months. According to neighbors' recollections, Xing Meilan should have learned of her husband's death when she arrived home from work on the evening of May 18, and later, the Xing family's parents and brothers came to arrange a spiritual hall for Qian Zuyi, but Xing Meilan disappeared. Some people say that she was overly sad and sent to the hospital, and it is not clear whether this statement is true. However, she was present at the funeral.

After that, Xing lived alone, and the child she was pregnant accidentally miscarried. After another two years, the Xing family suddenly suffered. First of all, Lao Xing's business was not smooth, and when he partnered with a British businessman to do hardware business, he was deceived, suffered huge losses, and borrowed money everywhere in an attempt to turn over the money. On a rainy day in the spring of 1935, Lao Xing went to the suburban town of Huangdu to talk about business, saying that he would stay overnight and return to the city the next day, but he never came back. Two days later, his body was found in a tributary of the Wusong River on the shore of the town, and he had no head. The people in the Huangdu area are strong, and there is no shortage of characters on both sides of the Wusong River who are "working and farming when busy, and going out as bandits at night in idle time", this kind of case is the most difficult to solve, and Lao Xing's death will be in vain. About a year after Lao Xing's death, Xing Meilan sold the house in Huaxinfang and did not know where to relocate.

The investigator wondered if, since Xing worked for a telephone company, he should go to the company to check it out. Although liberated at that time, the American Shanghai Telephone Company was still operating independently (the company was taken over by the Shanghai Municipal Military Control Commission on December 30, 1950). The foreign director of the Shanghai Telephone Company of the United States came forward to receive the investigators, listened to Hong Siyu's intentions, and pondered a little, saying that I remembered that this Miss Xing had left the company at the end of the month of the outbreak of the Pacific War. Saying that, he picked up the phone and ordered his subordinates to transfer out the personnel file of 1941, and sure enough, there was a resignation report written by Xing Meilan himself, and the date of payment was December 29, 1941. The investigators offered to check Miss Xing's home address, and the foreign supervisor shrugged his shoulders and said he couldn't help. Because the applicant was not required to provide his residential address when he was recruiting, he was only asked to leave contact information. The contact information left by Xing Meilan is the "Xiangsheng Electric Equipment Import Company" in Nanshi City, which is guaranteed by him, and the guarantor is the company's boss Qin Daming.

The investigators then went to find boss Qin of "Xiangsheng", but the original location of "Xiangsheng" had become a restaurant. After inquiring from the restaurant owner and a group of neighbors, he learned that "Xiangsheng" had closed its doors two years before the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and Boss Qin had gone to his overseas son to retire. Then there was only one other way to find out xing Meilan's whereabouts.

On June 6, investigators from the special case team went to Huaxinfang again, visiting residents and hawkers door to door. By noon, all the residents ran to the stalls at the mouth of the alley and the mobile vendors who walked through the streets and alleys, and no one could say where Xing Meilan's mother's home was.

How do I check it out? Investigator Song Yougu said: I estimate that in such a lane, the old residents of twenty years ago will always move away, can we try to find these people to inquire? The crowd thought this suggestion was worth a try, and once again plunged into the alley to visit the residents. Not to mention, in the past twenty years, there have been many residents who have moved out of the alley, as many as seventeen. Immediately went to investigate, and finally got the harvest: a catholic old woman surnamed Cheng who had relocated to Aidoya Road (renamed Yan'an East Road after liberation) many years ago told the investigators that one Sunday when Mr. Qian (referring to Qian Zuyi) was still there, she went to Dongjiadu Church to pray, and found that the lady next to her was Xing Meilan! Xing Meilan has always been cold to the neighbors, but at this moment in the church, everyone is God's people, and she greets Mrs. Cheng politely. After that, the two met on the road and always nodded to each other. Later, Miss Xing's husband died, and the neighbors talked about her filial piety, and only Mrs. Cheng defended her, telling her neighbor that Miss Xing was Catholic, and there were no strict rules in the church on this situation.

Mrs. Cheng's statement made the task force clarify two problems, one was the reason why Xing Shi did not wear filial piety at that time; Second, Xing is a Catholic and once went to Dongjiadu Church to worship. That's fine, go to the church to investigate, where it is estimated that there is a contact address for the believers.

Sure enough, there was Xing Meilan's contact information in dongjiadu church. The woman, who has changed her name to "Zhong Mingqin", lives on Jiangyin Road in Xincheng District, and after leaving the telephone company, works as a teacher in a church primary school and is still single. That night, the task force summoned Xing Meilan, now Zhong Mingqin.

Prior to this, the special case team had learned about the woman's political history from the Guanduan police station: she belonged to the general public, and did not find that she had participated in reactionary organizations or gangs before liberation. The investigator told the police that his deceased husband was a major officer of the Kuomintang Songhu Police Command, and the other side was surprised, saying that the police station did not grasp the situation. However, she did not violate the policy, because there was no requirement for ordinary people to register the political identity of their deceased spouses with the police.

When Xing Meilan met with the investigators, she seemed very calm. Qian Zuyi's death had been twenty years since then, and she did not know the nature of the arrest operation that Qian had presided over on Chengdu Road in the public concession, and it was estimated that no one at the Security Command would reveal it to her. The first question the investigator asked, of course, was that she went to "Guangren Hospital" to meet zhao Baohao on May 19, 1930.

Xing replied that Zhao Baohao was a member of the detective detachment directly under the Security Command, and her husband was an inspector sent by the Security Command to the reconnaissance brigade. She had heard Qian Zuyi say that his mission was to supervise and guide the investigation brigade's operations, and when necessary, he could directly dispatch all the members of the investigation brigade to carry out their tasks. After Qian's accident on May 18, she immediately went to the morgue of the Concession Police Department to check on her husband's body, and then went to the Security Command to ask for an explanation of her husband's death. Therefore, she felt strange about the cause of her husband's death, and instead wanted to inquire about Zhao Baohao, the only living of the three people on the mission- Xing also knew Zhao Baohao, Qian Zuyi had asked Zhao Baohao, who was a skilled craftsman, to help him with the maintenance of water and electricity in the family, and Xing also cooked several dishes to entertain.

The concession patrol house did not allow Xing to go to the hospital to contact the wounded, in desperation, Xing shi found a foreign executive of the telephone company he worked for help, she knew that the executive had a good relationship with the patrol house, and asked him to come forward to estimate that the patrol house would buy face. The foreign executive heard about Xing's plight, expressed sympathy, promised to help, and made a phone call on the spot. Xing Shi was next to him, and he heard very clearly, and the executive did not open his mouth directly to the patrol room, but entrusted Du Yuesheng. Du Yuesheng agreed and asked Miss Xing to go to the Du Mansion on the morning of the 19th to pick up the note he had written. Xing took the note signed by Du and went to the patrol house again, and sure enough, the passage was unimpeded.

What did Xing Meilan and Zhao Baohao talk about? She told investigators that she asked Zhao Baohao about the situation at the time of the case, but Zhao Baohao refused. Zhao said that according to the regulations, he could only disclose the relevant information to the military judges of the Military Justice Department of the Garrison Command or other authorized personnel of the Garrison Command, otherwise he would be punished. Of course, Xing Shi was not dead hearted, and repeatedly asked for advice, and Zhao Baohao was not moved. There was no way, she had to leave the hospital.

The investigator's second question was: "Do you have a relationship with the 'Party Investigation Section'?"

Xing Meilan confessed that her mother Xu Shi was a relative of Xu Xinliu, a chaebol in Zhejiang, and that her father, Lao Xing, had originally relied on Xu Xinliu's connections; She went to the telephone company as an operator and was also introduced through Xu's relationship. Therefore, at the beginning of the establishment of the "Party Adjustment Section," Xu Xinliu's close relative, Xu En, who was also the actual host of the section, invited Xing Meilan's entire family to have dinner at "Wang Baohe." During the banquet, Xu En said that he had a project in hand that needed help, and wanted to ask the younger sister to help him when it was convenient in the future (Xu En, who was born in 1896, was four years older than Xing Meilan, and the reference to "little sister" here is polite). At that time, not to mention Xing Meilan, even his father Xing also thought that Xu Enzeng's identity was a mechanical and electrical engineer (Xu Enzeng graduated from Shanghai Nanyang University in his early years, studied in the United States, and became a mechanical and electrical engineer in Shanghai after returning to China), thinking that it was a matter of mechanical and electrical business, and said that he could help.

Unexpectedly, about two months later, Xu En had assigned a man surnamed Wang to come and talk to Xing Meilan with his handwritten note. Only then did Xing know that Xu En had already changed careers to do the Kuomintang's "secret work," and the so-called project cooperation mentioned at the "Wang Baohe" dinner bureau last time was actually to let her take advantage of her convenience as an operator in a telephone company to eavesdrop on and record the telephone number provided by the "Party Investigation Section." That year, Xing Meilan was a twenty-eight-year-old widow who had never been involved in politics, and although Xu En's allowance fee was more attractive, she did not dare to rush to agree and consulted with her parents. It was only then that the parents learned that Xu Enzeng had changed careers, believing that it was best for a woman not to engage in political activities and persuading her daughter to refuse. Therefore, Xing Meilan returned to that Mr. Wang.

The investigator's third question was: "Did Qian Zuyi tell you about his usual work situation? On May 18, 1930, he led Zhao Baohao and others to the public concession, did he ever mention it to you beforehand?"

Ms. Xing said she was influenced by her parents and did not care about politics. Moreover, when Xu Xinliu went to her home (referring to her mother's house) to congratulate qian Zuyi before marrying, he had cared for her not to ask for money after marriage, and qian was doing confidential work, although it was his wife and the less he knew, the better. Therefore, Xing Meilan never inquired about her husband's work. Qian Zuyi is also tight-lipped and never mentions his work to her. On the day of the accident, Qian Zuyi left home at seven o'clock in the morning as usual. On this day, Xing Meilan took turns to rest at home, and Qian Zuyi agreed with her when he left that he would not make dinner today, and in the evening he would go outside to eat a restaurant after returning home from work, and then go dancing. Xing Meilan was very open after listening to it, and began to wait for her husband to come home at four o'clock in the afternoon, but what was waiting for her was bad news.

The special case team analyzed the above situation and held that the content of Xing's account was basically true. In particular, her relationship with the "Party Adjustment Section" is not credible. Otherwise, she wouldn't have to turn around and ask Du Yuesheng for help, just ask Xu Enzeng to make a phone call.

Later, by consulting the enemy files taken over and investigating the former "Central Unification" agents who were arrested after the liberation of Shanghai, the investigators finally found out the whereabouts of the agent surnamed Wang who had been sent by Xu En to invite Xing Meilan to serve in the "Party Adjustment Section." This man's name was Wang Fuxiang, who was over sixty years old at the time, and in the middle of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the headquarters of Wang's pseudo-"Seventy-Six" secret agents and the Kuomintang intelligence agencies left the "Central Unification" due to injuries during the war in Shanghai Beach and returned to their hometown in Pudong to open a small shop running small department stores. After liberation, because he was a bit cultured, and no one in the town knew the history of his previous service in the "Central Unification", and he pretended to actively demand progress, he was regarded as a progressive person by the county federation of industry and commerce. If it were not for the fact that the "suspension" task force extended the investigation tentacles to his head, he might have been able to escape the sanctions.

On June 9, Wang Fuxiang was arrested, and his confession confirmed Xing Meilan's refusal to serve in the "Party Adjustment Section." Since Wang Fuxiang had nothing to do with the case being investigated by the special case team, the "suspension office" handed him over to the Municipal Public Security Bureau for disposal. Later, the offender was sentenced to twenty years in prison. At this point, the special case team finally confirmed that Xing Meilan was not involved in the "Mazi No. 3" case.

Sixth, the goal is revealed

On June 10, when Hong Siyu, the head of the special case team, reported the situation to Director Yang of the "suspension office", Director Yang said that after all, this was a historical unsolved case, and during the period of twenty years, it was precisely during the period of war and chaos, and the human and physical evidence were scattered and annihilated, and it was impossible to investigate the case clearly at once. This is true of your fourth group, and it is also true of several other task force groups. Therefore, don't worry, try to do the work in detail, give you a suggestion, simply put out all the facts of the case you currently have, carefully sort out from beginning to end, find out what you haven't noticed or haven't touched before, maybe you can make a breakthrough.

The investigators of the case team then gathered together and reorganized the case. This time, they changed their perspective, stood on the enemy's position, and considered how to review Zhao Baohao with the thinking of the management personnel at that time, and analyzed the review links that could be imagined one by one:

First, after accepting the mission, the handling personnel (that is, Yan Wangshi) arranged for Guo Fengyun, Li Liansheng, and Rong Fugui to secretly monitor Zhao Baohao in disguise as a submariner" in "Guangren Hospital" To secretly monitor Zhao Baohao. In this link, Guo and others have found that Qian Zuyi's wife Xing Meilan (of course, they do not know her identity) has entered Zhao Baohao's hospital room, and will definitely report this as a suspicious sign to Yan Wangshi. However, according to the confessions of Li Liansheng and Rong Fugui, Yan Wangshi did not make corresponding arrangements for this after hearing the report. According to the investigator's analysis, it is very likely that Yan has found out Xing's identity and the reason for going to the hospital through the internal line of the patrol room of the Security Command, believing that this plot has nothing to do with the case and does not need to be concerned.

Second, after the Security Command negotiated with the patrol house, Zhao Baohao was allowed to leave the hospital and was transferred by the Security Command to a small French-run hospital in Xujiahui for a closed review. According to Li Liansheng and Rong Fugui' recollection, they (including Xiao Guo) acted strictly according to Yan Wangshi's instructions and were not qualified to make suggestions, and did not even have the idea of making a suggestion. Therefore, the review plan should come from Yan Wangshi. Due to the importance of this case, it is estimated that the review plan drawn up by Yan must also be submitted to the Chief of Military Justice for review.

Third, after the review, Zhao Baohao was discharged from the hospital and returned to the dormitory of the detective detachment in Longhua Town to recuperate. At this point, the review has actually ended, because the executor Xiao Guo and three other people have been rebuilt. Judging from Li and Rong's confessions, Yan Wangshi was still satisfied with the performance of the three of them, which can also be seen from the fact that Yan still assigned Guo, Li, and Rong to participate in the later arrest operation.

The above three points are big links, and the investigators also take into account the small links when analyzing, and they think that the small links that have not been considered before seem to be more worthy of scrutiny:

The main reason for examining Zhao Baohao is to determine how his gunshot wounds were formed. Judging from the situation at the scene at that time, although it had been "artificially damaged", the ballistic traces of the bullet could not be destroyed. Zhao Baohao could not casually make up nonsense to fool the investigators, and the statement of the situation must match the location of his wounds, otherwise he would find trouble for himself. Fortunately, the pistols of Qian Zuyi and others had been taken away, and even if the inspector of the patrol room determined that the three bullets found at the scene were fired from the same pistol, he could not prove that It was Zhao Baohao's pistol. At that time, the situation of civilian possession of guns was relatively common, such as the military unit of the Security Command, guns were basically in a state of no management, there was no "one gun and one gear" system at all, the pistols used by the detective team members to perform their duties could be distributed, or they could get them from their own channels, and the bullets were the same, in short, a confused account. In this way, Zhao Baohao cleverly avoided the two key identifications of "bullet mark identification" and "launch angle".

However, the investigators of the special case team also considered that Zhao Baohao's self-injury was not completely seamless: when the self-injured person fired, the muzzle of the gun was definitely relatively close to the wound, which would cause the wound to leave obvious marks of gunpowder burning, and it should not be possible to hide from the surgeon who treated the wound at "Guangren Hospital". However, according to the confessions of Li Liansheng and Rong Fugui, Yan Wangshi did not have this point in the content they censored, so how can this be explained?

None of the five investigators in the special case group were familiar with forensic knowledge, and Hong Siyu, the leader of the special case team, called and invited an old forensic doctor who had worked in the legal arrest room and the Kuomintang Shanghai Police Station for many years.

According to the old forensic doctor, this trauma recognition is called "gunshot wound identification" in forensic science, and its types include through-shot bullet wounds, blind tube bullet wounds, swivel gun bullet wounds, grazing gunshot wounds and rebound gun bullet wounds; There are also three kinds of shooting distance: receiving, close-range and long-range shooting; As for the characteristics of gunshot wounds, it is even more important, and this article will be omitted. The investigator asked the old forensic doctor for advice, and listened to your old saying, Zhao Baohao's self-injury at that time belonged to "close shooting", and the traces formed should be more obvious. The old forensic doctor agreed. Then the investigator did not understand, how did Zhao Baohao's shot conceal the enemy?

The old forensic doctor offered a possibility—the first medical officer to treat the wound eliminated or at least covered up the above marks for him, destroyed the clothes he was wearing, and changed him into the hospital staff uniform that was necessary for admitted patients. The old forensic doctor estimated that the forensic examiner of the Criminal Department of the Capture Room and the officer of the Security Command should have asked the surgeon about the patient's wounds, and it was uncertain whether he had inquired about the whereabouts of the clothes he had changed. From the common sense of investigation, if the enemy asks about the whereabouts of the clothes, then they are already suspicious of the doctor.

According to the forensic doctor's above account, the investigators found a new idea of investigation: to find the doctor who treated Zhao Baohao's wounds.

The "Guangren Hospital" where Zhao Baohao treated gunshot wounds was presided over by the American Episcopal Church in 1940 and merged with the "Tongren Hospital" in the public concession to be renamed "Hongren Hospital" (renamed "Shanghai Chest Hospital" in 1957). The management of the hospital is in place, after many years, it still retains the medical files since its establishment intact, and the retrieval is convenient and fast. Investigators soon found the medical records of the gunshot wounded "Anonymous" sent by the Public Concession Patrol House on May 18, 1930. The case shows that the doctor responsible for handling The gunshot wound and follow-up treatment for Zhao Baohao is named Fang Zhongzhi. So, is dr. Fang still here? The hospital reception staff informed that Fang Zhongzhi had already left Shanghai and was said to have gone to Hong Kong. As for when he left, the reception staff did not know, only to check the personnel file.

Personnel files show that Fang Zhongzhi suddenly left the hospital on June 18, 1930, without quitting. Three days later, he sent a registered letter from Hong Kong offering his resignation to the hospital, but did not explain why. The date node of June 18 made the investigator suddenly excited: Wasn't that the day of Zhao Baohao's sacrifice? How could it be such a coincidence? What secrets are behind this coincidence?

The case also recorded the names of the nurses in the operating room, a total of three people, one named Zhong Wenya, one named Jiang Zengzhu, and one named Situ Xuan. When asked, among the three, Jiang Zengzhu and Situ Xuan were still in the hospital, and Zhong Wenya left the hospital about eighteen years ago, heard that he had also gone to Hong Kong, and happened to marry Fang Zhongzhi, who was already the chief of surgery in a British-run hospital in Hong Kong.

Hong Siyu, the leader of the special case team, immediately realized that this Fang Zhongzhi had a drama on him! However, it seems to be quite difficult to investigate again, because the target is in Hong Kong, even if you can go to the secret investigation in disguise, if it is determined that Fang Zhongzhi is involved, it is a troublesome thing to get him back. Hong Siyu summoned two old nurses, Jiang Zengzhu and Situ Xuan, who were still working at the hospital, and the investigators talked to them separately, one to understand the scene when they participated in the disposal of Zhao Baohao's gunshot wound twenty years ago, and the other to inquire about the social relations between Fang Zhongzhi and his wife Zhong Wenya in Shanghai.

Two old nurses recalled that when Zhao Baohao was rounded up and sent to the hospital that day, it was noon, first sent to the emergency room, the receiving doctor saw that it was a gunshot wound and the wounded people lost more blood, and immediately transferred to surgery. At that time, Jiang Zengzhu and Situ Xuan, two young nurses, were having lunch in the canteen when they received an urgent notice to go to the operating room quickly. When the two arrived, Dr. Fang had already treated Zhao Baohao's wound with the assistance of Zhong Wenya. The two detectives who escorted the wounded to the hospital did not enter the operating room, and the two of them were old smoking guns with scorched fingers, and they were leaning on the outside corridor window to swallow the clouds and spit mist, and they were very leisurely. At that time, the twenty-two-year-old Zhong Wenya was two years older than Jiang Zengzhu and Situ Ying, and at the age of sixteen, he had already taken the examination for the nursing school, and after graduating at the age of eighteen, he officially took up his post, and his working experience was longer than the two of them, and his spiritual skills were not comparable to the latter. Nurse Zhong also has a characteristic, her hands and feet are agile, no matter what she does, she is fast and good. Dr. Fang has such an assistant to help, even if he does not summon Jiang Zengzhu and Situ Xuan, he can deal with this operation. However, the Health Department of the Concession Ministry of Works and Bureaus has regulations that a doctor who performs surgery must be equipped with more than three nurses, and Dr. Fang cannot violate the law without authorization. As for the three nurses who had already started the operation without being fully equipped, it should have been the decision of the two Hua Detectives. After the two of them arrived, they only helped hand over instruments, disinfectant gauze, and cotton pads to wipe blood stains, and soon, Situ Xuan was sent by Dr. Fang to the pharmacy to get some medicines, and when she returned to the operating room, the wound treatment was over.

So why did Dr. Fang suddenly go to Hong Kong a month after surgery? This, Jiang Zengzhu and Situ Xuan can't say. They only know that Dr. Fang was originally from Guangdong, and they heard that he was an overseas Chinese, who studied medicine overseas, worked in a Hong Kong hospital, and then his parents and other family members came to Shanghai to do business, and he also settled in Shanghai. The investigators asked Zhong Wenya about going to Hong Kong two years later and marrying Fang Zhongzhi, and they all said that they knew about it, and after Zhong left Shanghai, the three of them still kept in touch, and for eighteen years they corresponded several times a year. When Dr. Zhong and Dr. Fang got married, the two of them also shared a gift.

They also told the investigators that Zhong Wenya was a Native of Shanghai, that she and Dr. Fang both lived in Xiafei Road in the former French Concession, that the Zhong family had been there before, that Dr. Fang's family had never been, and that the two families were said to live not far away.

Based on the above situation, the special case team basically determined that twenty years ago, Fang Zhongzhi treated the marks of gun burns spoken by the forensic doctor when disposing of Zhao Baohao's gunshot wounds. It is said that this is a good thing for the CCP, but why did he not quit on the day of Zhao Baohao's sacrifice? This can easily lead to a speculation that Fang Zhongzhi revealed to a third party that he had concealed the gunshot wound for Zhao Baohao, which directly led to Zhao Baohao's sacrifice. He was afraid of being retaliated against by a certain party because of this, and on the day he learned of the situation, he immediately fled Shanghai desperately to avoid disaster. There may be several different circumstances for this disclosure of the party: first, it is reported directly to the Security Command (or has been suspected by the Security Command and confessed after arrest); Second, after he revealed it to others, the others reported to the Security Command; There is also a situation in which he did not reveal it to anyone, but was discovered by others through some means and reported to the enemy. If the task force wants to find out the real situation, it must contact Fang Zhongzhi face-to-face. As for how to meet with Fang Zhongzhi, who was far overseas, he had to formulate a thorough plan. Before formulating the plan, it is necessary to conduct an investigation of the social relations in Shanghai that zhongzhi is aware of.

The next day, the investigators of the special case team went to the Huaizhong police station on Xiafei Road (changed to Linsen Middle Road after the victory of the War of Resistance, and then changed to Huaihai Middle Road after liberation) to learn about the situation of Fang Zhongzhi and Zhong Wenya.

The Fang family is indeed a returned overseas Chinese from Nanyang, its late father Fang Bokang was a well-known lawyer in Shanghai, his mother is still alive, more than seventy years old, living in the Shangxian Fang mansion for a long time, his two sons (Fang's two younger brothers) are university teachers, they have all become a family, three generations of children and grandchildren are in the same house, and I have not heard of anyone in the Fang family who is related to politics or criminal cases. As for Fang Zhongzhi himself, the police station is not clear, only heard that the eldest son of the Fang family is a doctor in Hong Kong, it seems that there is not much contact with the family, only in 1943 when his father died of illness and returned to Shanghai. Another Miss Zhong, who lives on Yandang Road next to Fuxing Park, left Shanghai for Hong Kong in the early years, and the police station knew less about her situation. It is said that Zhong Wenya has never returned to Shanghai since she went to Hong Kong, but has always maintained contact with her parents and siblings.

In order to prevent alarming the investigation targets, the special case team did not visit Fang and Zhong on the same day. They should make a careful analysis of the situation and then formulate a sound plan to see how to "lure" Fang Zhongzhi and his wife back to Shanghai.

After repeated research, the task force finally decided to send an urgent telegram to Hong Kong in the name of Fang Zhongzhi's two younger brothers, pretending that the old mother was critically ill. However, in order to implement such a plan involving overseas parties, the special case team has no right to decide, and the plan is reported in writing to the "pending office"; The "suspension office" also has no right to make decisions, and must ask the Party Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau for instructions. It takes at least three days in between. However, the task force did not use these three days to rest – once the plan was approved, it had to carefully consider how to keep it confidential and how to prevent Fang Zhongzhi from calling from Hong Kong to verify the authenticity of this information to his brother or others in his family and even relatives and friends.

Three days later, before noon on June 16, Director Yang personally informed Hong Siyu by telephone: Approve the implementation of the plan.

Hong Siyu was overjoyed, and just after putting down the microphone, the Huaizhong police station called again to report a news that made the head of the special case team jump with joy: Fang Zhongzhi and Zhong Wenya had come to Shanghai from Hong Kong and were already at the police station at the moment!

Seventh, the truth has finally emerged

Fang Zhongzhi and Zhong Wenya arrived in Shanghai at about 9:00 a.m. on the same day on the passenger ship from Hong Kong to Shanghai, and when they got off the ship, they hired a taxi back to their hometown of ShangxianFang on Middle Huaihai Road. The family was surprised not to have sent a telegram beforehand. Although Fang and Zhong returned to the mainland for the first time after liberation, they read the newspaper every day in Hong Kong and knew the situation in Shanghai, and in accordance with the regulations of the public security organs in the mainland, the couple immediately went to the Huaizhong police station to report a temporary household registration. The police at the police station just received the "suspension" investigator a few days ago, the other party, Mr. and Mrs. Zhong are keeping in mind, the current director personally came forward, invited two overseas visitors to drink tea and chat, and at the same time hinted that the police called the special case team to inform.

Fang and Zhong were still dealing with the people's public security for the first time, only to check a number of documents, tickets, and report the temporary household registration to finish the matter, suddenly saw five plainclothes rushing in, the police of the party immediately avoided, Fang realized that things are not so simple. Hong Siyu was still polite to the two, introducing himself as a municipal bureau policeman, and heard that Mr. Fang returned to Shanghai to visit his relatives, just because he had something to consult. In order to ease the tension of the other party, the task force leader did not go straight to the subject, but first chatted with the other party about the recent situation in Hong Kong. Fang Zhongzhi belonged to the kind of intellectuals who were a little pedantic, and although their medical skills were exquisite, they did not understand the world, and it was reasonable to think that these policemen had probably never seen the world, and it was reasonable to be curious about the overseas situation. So, where to start talking, think about it for a moment, start from the climate of Hong Kong, talk about the climate of Hong Kong, and then talk about the reason for your sudden return to Shanghai. He was preparing to return in early August, but on the 26th day of the 6th lunar month and 9 August in the Gregorian calendar, his mother's seventieth birthday was celebrated, and he was ready to bring his wife back to hold a lively birthday celebration. Half a month ago, however, he received an invitation from the International Society for Surgical Research to participate in a seven-country european medical tour from August 5 to 15. For a surgeon, this is a rare opportunity to communicate with international colleagues, he did not want to give up, he decided to come to Shanghai in advance to celebrate the birthday of his old mother.

Then, the investigators raised the questions that had been prepared: First, the situation of the wounded man who had been sent from the patrol room that year; The second is why he suddenly left.

Fang Zhongzhi said that after coming to Shanghai from Hong Kong in 1925 and working as a surgeon at "Guangren Hospital", he soon became famous because of his medical skills among the best in the hospital's surgery. One day, he rescued a gang member who came to Shanghai from other places to visit Du Yuesheng's sudden illness, so he made friends with Wan Molin, the housekeeper of Du Mansion. Later, after Wan's introduction, he was accepted by Du Yuesheng as a disciple and officially joined the Qing Gang, and naturally he also knew some gang members, including many detectives in the French Concession and the public concession. Of course, a pedantic scholar like him, who devoted himself to medical skills, could not participate in gang activities, and even the grand event for Du Yuesheng to pay homage to Du Yuesheng, which was required to attend once a year by ordinary disciples, was often absent. However, the three tycoons in the Green Gang, from Du Yuesheng, Jin Jinrong, and Zhang Xiaolin, down to the small wisps of running errands below, have a good reputation for him - gang armed fighting incidents occur frequently, and the injured are sent to "Guangren Hospital" for treatment, he has done his best, and occasionally asked to do tricks and feet when disposing of wounds, so that forensics can be concealed during identification.

At noon on May 18, 1930, just in time for Fang Zhongzhi to be on duty at noon, he suddenly received a call from a friend Zhang Mou with a gang background, saying that there would soon be a gunshot wounded man sent to "Guangren Hospital", please Ask Dr. Fang to treat the surface marks of his wounds cleanly to withstand forensic identification, please! Come on! As soon as I put down the phone, the alarm of the police car was already sounding outside.

At that time, Fang Zhongzhi had been a surgeon for eight years, Hong Kong for three years and Shanghai for five years, both of which were prevalent in the underworld, and he had probably seen more gunshot wounds than ordinary forensic doctors. When I looked at the wound of the "nameless" who was sent, I immediately concluded that it was self-injury. It was not difficult for him to eliminate the traces of self-injury, and it was quickly handled, and only Zhong Wenya, who later became his wife, was present at the time.

Fang Zhongzhi did not know the identity of the wounded, "Guangren Hospital" was the designated hospital for the treatment of trauma in the hunting room, fang Zhongzhi also knew that it was best to remain silent when contacting such an object, and the wounded person was silent from beginning to end. Fang Zhongzhi originally thought that the forensic doctor of the police department would come to him to ask about the treatment of the wound, but the forensic doctor had never come to the hospital. However, after the wounded left the hospital, a judge surnamed Yan from the Military Justice Department of the Security Command came to the hospital with a clerk to ask him about the initial handling of the gunshot wounds. But then, for some reason, no one came looking for him.

Fang Zhongzhi thought that this matter had passed, but a month later, that is, at noon on June 18, he suddenly received a phone call from a friend of the Qing gang in the capture room, saying that he had just seen an urgent extradition official letter from the police headquarters, asking the arrest room to immediately arrest Fang Zhongzhi, a surgeon at "Guangren Hospital", and extradite him to the Military Justice Department of the Police Command, on the grounds of "shielding communists." Fang Zhongzhi was a nerd, and he was very confused when he heard the words, saying that I didn't know any Communist Party, and that I just wanted to cover up and have nowhere to look! At the moment, he was going to Longhua to consult with the Security Command. The other party was anxious, saying that Dr. Fang you should hurry up and escape, the official letter said, you are a major criminal of the Security Command! The farther you go, the better, it's best to go overseas, don't come back! Fang Zhong knew that he believed that he was probably really doomed, and he had to leave. He had just taken his wallet and passport and the doctor's practice certificate from the drawer, when the door was suddenly pushed open, and a strange man flashed in, closed the door, and asked: "Are you Dr. Fang Zhongzhi?" I am a friend of Mr. Zhang, and Mr. Zhang asked me to pick you up and get you out of here. ”

Fang Zhong knew that he didn't have time to think too much, and followed the other party. They got out of the back door of the hospital and got into a small car parked across the road. The car sped off to Huangpu Wharf (now Qinhuangdao Wharf). Fang Zhong knew that the man and the driver were in a state of high tension, and Fang Zhong knew that the situation was indeed critical. After the car stopped in a corner of the dock, the man said that Mr. Zhang had already arranged it, and you used the British freighter on this badge to wear a badge on Fang Zhongzhi's tie, and then pulled out a bulging envelope: "This is your coil."

In this way, Fang Zhongzhi finally escaped the pursuit without any danger. After gaining a foothold in Hong Kong, he wrote a letter to Zhong Wenya, a nurse who had already fallen in love with her first love, in the name of a relative. Zhong replied that he had not heard that the patrol room had come to the hospital to arrest people, but in the first few days after you left, there were often strange men with suspicious identities sneaking around in the hospital, not knowing what they wanted to do. Fang Zhong knew that at that time, he had learned in correspondence with his friends that the Security Command did ask the capture room to arrest and extradite him, but the arrest room did not act publicly with great fanfare, but only assigned plainclothes to the hospital to squat secretly, and after a few days without success. Fang Zhongzhi did not dare to return to the interior again. When his father died, Shanghai was already under the rule of the Wang puppet regime, and the public concession and the garrison headquarters no longer existed, so he dared to go back to the funeral, but he only stayed in Shanghai for three days before returning to Hong Kong.

After the liberation of Shanghai, some of the Qing gang friends fled to Hong Kong, including Du Yuesheng's housekeeper Wan Molin. Not long ago, Fang Zhongzhi attended one of their gatherings, only to learn that the Security Command had not "wronged" him, and that the injured person he had been entrusted by his friends to cover up the wound marks for him was indeed a Communist Party.

The special case team analyzed the above situation and believed that Fang Zhongzhi's description was true. So, it is still the old question: how did the Military Justice Department grasp the clues of Zhao Baohao's self-injury? It seems that the problem should be inside the "Guangren Hospital". While the investigators were discussing arriving here, they suddenly received a call from the janitor's room, saying that a woman who claimed to be a surgical nurse at "Hirohito Hospital" had asked to see her. Hong Siyu jumped up and said that the meeting was suspended, and Old Cai and I went to receive it.

The visitor was a nurse, Jiang Zengzhu, who reported to the investigators a situation in recent days by her colleague Situ Xuan. On June 12, when the investigators went to the "Hongren Hospital" to investigate, they had taken care of her and Situ Xuan, hoping to recall the relevant situation of that year, and if they remembered what needed to be supplemented, they could always go to the city bureau to reflect or call. Jiang Zengzhu had heard it, but she found that Situ Xuan in the same department had been a little different since then, and she was not talkative so much, and she often stood alone in front of the window in her free time, and there were two mistakes in her work. Yesterday evening, the two of them walked together to the station to wait for the train when they got off work, and on the way, Situ Xuan suddenly said something to her for no reason, to the effect that her husband (who was a retained police officer of the Huangpu branch) said that recently the city's public security system was being rectified, and a number of retained policemen had been taken in for the crimes of participating in the investigation before liberation and arresting the underground party and democratic progressives of the CCP, and some of them might even be sentenced to death! Her husband said that some of these people took the initiative to confess historical crimes to the organization, and some of them usually talked too much and were reported by others. Jiang Zengzhu didn't know what it meant when he heard it, and casually echoed: "Hey, this kind of person is old and stupid (Shanghainese, saying that someone is stupid)!" Situ Xuan said, "Therefore, we must pay more attention."

At that time, Jiang Zengzhu was anxious to go home and did not care. When chatting with her husband at night, as a gossip, Situ Xuan's words were said, her husband is a math teacher, strong logical thinking ability, at the moment said that you have not done anything bad, pay attention to what? A word reminded Jiang Zengzhu, she recalled Situ Xuan's abnormal behavior in the past few days according to the idea of her husband's reminder, and her husband thought that this person may have a problem and should report to the police.

The task force immediately decided: control Situ Xuan!

After Situ Xuan was controlled as a suspect, the special case team did not immediately interrogate him, but summoned the other three parties from twenty years ago, Fang Zhongzhi, Zhong Wenya and Jiang Zengzhu, to talk separately first, and then concentrate on a collective memory, and finally found a thread that Situ Xuan may be involved in!

Twenty years ago, on May 18, although Fang Zhongzhi did not know the identity of the injured, he was a nerd doctor with a deep-rooted awareness of "being entrusted by others and being loyal to others", taking into account every link of eliminating traces. After dealing with the wound, he thought that the wounded's clothes might show flaws (the damaged parts would also leave burn marks caused by close-range shooting), so he took care of Zhong Wenya and sent the wounded to the ward, and sent the clothes to the burning point next to the morgue to burn them directly.

Zhong Wenya is an honest and responsible girl, and after she and Situ Xuan and Jiang Zengzhu sent the wounded to the ward, they took care of the "accompanying" catching room plainclothes and needed to pay attention to what points. After taking care of it, the three nurses were just about to leave the ward, but Zhong Wenya was summoned by the foreign doctor on duty in the ward, and she had to give feedback to Dr. Fang about the situation of an inpatient and ask her to bring a word. Therefore, she summoned Situ Xuan, who was about to push the operating table into the elevator, quietly cared for and burned the clothes that the wounded had changed off immediately after returning to the operating room, and stressed that she must take matters into her own hands. Situ Xuan agreed. When the clock returned a while later, Situ Xuan told her that it had burned, and the clock did not have the slightest doubt about it.

The task force believes that Situ Xuan most likely did not burn his clothes, but hid them. A month later, she used this as evidence to inform the Security Command, which led to Zhao Baohao's death.

The task force then interrogated Situ Xuan, who confessed to his crime.

It turned out that after Situ Xuan, a beautiful nurse who was twenty years old at the time, went to work, she had a love for Fang Zhongzhi, who was nine years older than her. Situ Xuan's mind was exquisite, knowing that he was a new nurse, and he could not hastily show the meaning of the other doctor. Therefore, we always pay attention to Dr. Fang's various words and deeds, and take the initiative when the time is ripe. After a few months of observation, he unexpectedly found that Dr. Fang liked Zhong Wenya, who was inferior to him in every aspect. At this point, Situ Xuan could not wait, and decided to act quickly, frequently giving hints to Dr. Fang. However, Fang Zhongzhi is a pedantic student who does not understand the style, and the work arrangement determines that Situ Xuan and Dr. Fang have almost no chance to get along alone. Watching his sweetheart and love enemy become more and more intimate, Situ Xuan hated because of love, the first hated Zhong Wenya, and the second was Fang Zhongzhi. Then, the brain of revenge was activated.

The May 18 shooting brought the opportunity before her. However, she entered the operating room with Jiang Zengzhu after Fang Zhongzhi treated the wounds of the wounded, and she had no idea that there was a "cat greasy" in this operation. Of course, even if she was present at the beginning, with her professionalism and knowledge, she would not necessarily find any clues. It wasn't until Zhong Wenya took care of her and burned her clothes after returning to the operating room that she vaguely felt that something was wrong: the wounded man was not suffering from an infectious disease, and the trauma was not caused by rabid dog bites, so why burn the clothes immediately. And also to burn it yourself? The usual practice in the hospital is to send it to the morgue and burn it regularly every day by the miscellaneous servants who manage the morgue. Therefore, she left an extra heart, and after taking her clothes, she did not send them to the morgue, but went into the locker room to secretly check. Although he was basically a layman, he still found the burn marks around the wound location on the clothes at a glance, and vaguely guessed where the "cat greasy" was. So she wrapped her clothes in oil paper and hid them in a dressing box.

After "Anonymous" was taken away from the hospital, Situ Xuan heard people talking about the wounded person being a member of the detective team of the Security Command. She has no interest in politics, only how to retaliate against Fang Zhongzhi and Zhong Wenya. But after all, he was young, and he had no idea for a while, and he wanted to quietly mail the blood coat to the security command, but he was not sure whether it had an effect. In this way, it dragged on until June 17, when I overheard a colleague say that the day before yesterday, I saw Fang Zhongzhi and Zhong Wenya watching a movie at the Aofeim Grand Theater (renamed Huxi Workers' Theater and Huxi Cinema after liberation) on Jisifei Road (now Wanhangdu Road), and I couldn't help but be jealous and decided to take revenge. After work that day, she wrote a whistle-blowing letter, and the post office near her residence sent the blood-clad whistle-blowing letter to the Longhua Police Headquarters by registered mail.

However, Situ Xuan did not see the consequences of his revenge - Fang Zhongzhi successfully escaped, Zhong Wenya was safe (according to the analysis of the special case team, it should be the Security Command that Zhong was not involved in the case), and two years later, Zhong Wenya immigrated to Hong Kong and became Fang Zhongzhi's wife. Situ Xuan cried a lot, and since then he has been disheartened, and soon married a financial officer who wore a police uniform at the Kuomintang police station (after liberation, he remained as a traffic policeman).

Situ Xuan never knew what consequences her whistle-blowing behavior had on the injured person, until this time the investigator went to the hospital to investigate, and she knew that her impulse had caused a catastrophe, and she almost fainted in shock. After that, she had been in a trance, her demeanor was reversed, and she had a faint move, and she actually said those words to Jiang Zengzhu.

At this point, half of the "Mazi No. 3" case was solved, and the other half was what the message that Zhao Baohao wanted to convey to the organization after requesting the implementation of the "No. 4 Plan" was. When the special case group was preparing to enter the investigation again, Director Yang of the "Suspension Office" summoned the group leader, Hong Siyu: Beijing called to inform that the other half of the case had been studied and judged by the Ministry of Public Security on the basis of the "Brief Investigation" submitted by the Shanghai "Suspension Office" every day in the form of machine requirements, and the results were obtained. As a result, the investigation into the case is closed.

Hong Siyu was naturally surprised, but he couldn't ask how he had judged the result. It wasn't until a few years later that he stumbled upon the answer to this mystery: when Zhao Baohao had an accident, he angrily rebuked the secret agent Guo Fengyun for "the thirteen points that are worthy of the name - the thirteen points in Wuxi", which is the intelligence transmitted by Zhao Baohao after realizing that he could not escape this disaster. He knew that this encounter was bound to become a big news in Longhua Town, and his angry rebuke of Guo's words would definitely be spread through the mouths of Old Man Wu and Xue Lame Zi, and would be detected by the organization. Regrettably, the comrades who investigated the "Mazi No. 3" case at that time were unable to obtain this information due to various conditions. In fact, the task force did not pay attention to this sentence, but only reported it as the content of the investigation. However, experts from the Ministry of Public Security noticed this content and came to the conclusion that Zhao Baohaolian said two "thirteen points" and emphasized the word "Wuxi" in a clever four-character message using his Ningbo accent -- "Twenty-six in Western Shanghai," which was the code name of a secret traffic officer of the underground party in Shanghai at that time, who was one of the underground traffic officers who greeted the deputies of the "two sessions" and sent them to the secret venue of "Dekang Hospital" on Chengdu Road.

However, it is now impossible to pursue the crimes of this traitor. In the early winter of 1930, the "Huxi Twenty-Six" was discovered by the organization for betraying other comrades, and they were immediately hoeed and killed. Now, based on the information passed by Zhao Baohao at the last moment before his death, experts finally determined that it was the "Huxi Twenty-Six" who betrayed the organization's confidential information to Qian Zuyi.

October 27, 1950." The criminals related to the Ma Zi No. 3 case, Situ Xuan, Li Liansheng, and Rong Fugui, were sentenced to death by the Shanghai Municipal Military Control Commission and immediately executed.
