John William Waterhouse (1849–1917) was an English neoclassical and pre-Raphaelite painter and a fellow of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He drew inspiration from works of pre-Raphaelite and classical art, and his beauties had the slender, pale and other characteristics of the pre-Raphaelites. His style is elegant and romantic, and he is particularly good at depicting flowers and women.

Titled The Soul of the Rose, the work was inspired by English literature and classical mythology. Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449-1494) was one of the outstanding artists of the Italian Renaissance and a teacher to the sculptor Michelangelo.

The painting, titled Portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni, was written by Giovanna Tornabuoni, the wife of the Florentine banker Tornabuoni in Killanda. The broken red coral necklace in the painting hangs behind Jovana's blonde bun. In Italy, red coral represents motherhood, indicating that Giovanna has become a mother, while a broken red coral necklace means her death. The French painter Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) was ostensibly a successor to neoclassicism, but in fact a lover of romanticism. He has an unusual interest in oriental moods, which is closely related to his early trips to the Middle East.

The work, titled Bashi-Bozouk, was created by Jérôme after returning to Paris after a 12-week trip to Southwest Asia. To complete the work, he had the model wear the textiles he had bought during his travels.

"Bashi bozouk" is a transliteration of the Turkish term "Başıbozuk", which literally means "headless", and the term also refers to the irregular army of the Ottoman Empire. It was a special army that lived by plunder, consisting mainly of Arabs and Bosniaks. The protagonist of the painting is also a member of the army, and the exquisite silk coat contrasts greatly with the solemn demeanor and special identity of the characters.

Édouard Manet (1832-1883) was one of the founders of Impressionism in the 19th century. Deeply influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e and Spanish painting styles, his works are brightly colored and contrasting, and he liberates painting from the tradition of pursuing three-dimensional space, taking a revolutionary step towards two-dimensional flat creation.

The painting, Jeanne - Le Printemps (Spring), was first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1882, which was also the last major public exhibition of Manet's life. The woman in the painting is the Parisian actress Jennie Demasey. She stood under a lush flower tree, holding a parasol and looking straight ahead, seemingly completely unaware of the admiring gaze that the viewer cast at her.

Sidney Harold Meteyard (1868–1947), an honorary member of the Royal Birmingham Arts Society, taught at the Birmingham Central School of Arts and Crafts for 45 years and died on Good Friday at Malt House Farm near Alchester.
