Notice of Dawn (excerpt)

Please wake up the attentive woman and the snoring man please also rise up and the snoozing maiden please wake up the sleepy mother and the baby beside her Please wake everyone Even those who are sick and pregnant, even those who are old and groan in bed, even those who are wounded in war for justice and those who are displaced by the fall of their homeland, please wake up all the unfortunate people I will give them comfort together... Please, the poets of your faithful time, bring comfort to mankind, please prepare them for a welcome, please prepare all the people to welcome When the rooster cries for the last time I will come and ask them to gaze at the sky with pious eyes I will give all the most merciful radiance that is expecting me, and please tell them that what they are waiting for is coming in 1940

Reading:

After the Anhui Incident in 1941, Ai Qing came from Chongqing to Yan'an, the revolutionary base area. In this new world, the poet's heart suddenly opened. The poet clearly feels that for a long time, the Chinese nation, which has been in the midst of class oppression and national crisis, has experienced the stormy years of struggle, and the dawn that people have hoped for is coming. In the poem "Notice of dawn", the poet conveys this message to people with his own unique sensitivity. The whole poem is always written in the self-description of the dawn, and the poet becomes the messenger who conveys the prayer of the dawn. Dawn hopes that the poet, "Please wake up all the unfortunate"—attentive women, snoring men, young lovers, snoozing maidens, sleepy mothers, babies, sick people, maternity, old people, etc.—"I will give them comfort together." The poet wrote so many "please wake up" people, intending to tell people that the dawn will bring comfort to all the oppressed and exploited toiling masses. The anthropomorphic technique makes the poem full of freshness, and the joy in the poet's heart overflows even more touchingly. The whole poem uses symbolism, and the "dawn" symbolizes the victory of the revolution and the liberation of the whole country. With the image of "dawn", the poet summoned people, taking "the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan" and "the bright future of the War of Resistance Against Japan" as the symbol, expressing the poet's desire and pursuit of a bright, free and happy life, expressing his condolences and thoughts for the enslaved and oppressed people, as well as the positive optimism and high spirit of praise in the difficult times.
