On the morning of November 17, the Xinjiang Fisheries Research Institute carried out breeding and stocking of 42,000 flatfish at the Kyzyl Reservoir in Baicheng County, Xinjiang. This is the 15th consecutive year that the autonomous region has carried out artificial breeding and stocking activities in the Kyzyl Reservoir, and the cumulative number of Xinjiang flatfish released has reached 1.262 million.
This breeding and stocking is the highest specification of any breeding and stocking. The 42,000 flatfish released in this release are divided into two types, one is 20,000 fish of 10 cm, and the other is 22,000 of 40 cm - 45 cm. At the scene of stocking fish fry, the Regional Agriculture and Rural Bureau, the Baicheng County Agricultural and Rural Bureau, and the Kyzyl Reservoir Management Bureau randomly sampled more than 2,000 fry, supervised and inspected the quality of the fry, and issued a quarantine certificate for the origin of aquatic fry. The Baicheng County Notary Office conducted on-site notarization of the release.
It is reported that the Xinjiang flatnose fish was listed as a first-class protected endangered wild animal by the state in 1988, and is the only national first-class protected fish in Xinjiang, which belongs to the same level as the land giant panda, and is known as "giant panda in the water" and "fish living fossil". In order to protect this rare fish species that is on the verge of extinction, in 1999, the state set up the "Original Seed Farm of China's Xinjiang Flatnose Fish" in the region, and began to conduct resource surveys and research and protection of Xinjiang flatnose fish, focusing on its collection, domestication and artificial breeding. In 2015, the Kyzyl Reservoir Management Bureau invested more than 2 million yuan to build a breeding base for Xinjiang flatnose fish in the reservoir area, and there are currently 10 wild broodstock (breeding fish) of 5-8 kg in the breeding base, as well as more than 200 reserve broodstock with an average weight of about 2 kg, and about 100,000 fry of Xinjiang flatnose are artificially hatched every year.
"The xinjiang flatnose fish released in the Kyzyl Reservoir is relatively large, with an average size of about 300 grams to 400 grams, which is also a second-generation Xinjiang flatnose fish with relatively large stocking specifications in the whole of Xinjiang." Zhang Tao, a senior engineer at the Autonomous Region Fisheries Research Institute, said.
Zhang Tao said that in recent years, with the strong support and help of the Autonomous Region's Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Fisheries Research Institute, the Aksu Regional Agricultural and Rural Bureau, and the Baicheng County Agricultural and Rural Bureau, the Autonomous Region's Fisheries Research Institute has successively adopted various measures such as artificial domestication and preservation of broodstock, artificial breeding, and breeding and stocking activities, and has achieved certain results. In the future, we will ensure the continuity of breeding and stocking activities and better protect the flatfish in Xinjiang. (Jiang Xiaojun) (China Daily Xinjiang Reporter Station)
