The ring-striped blunt-mouthed salamander is a terrestrial amphibian. Found in the United States, its natural habitat is in wet areas of the forest, near shallow ponds, and adult ring-striped blunt-mouthed salamanders are good at digging, often hiding in underground nests. The ring-striped salamander lives alone except during the breeding season. It is carnivorous and feeds on earthworms, insects, snails and other invertebrates. Poor vision, predation is mainly based on smell or lateral lines. It can regenerate after mutilation of the limbs and tail. It is speculated that the lifespan of the wild ringed blunt salamander can reach 10 years.

Appearance feature

The total length of the ring-striped blunt salamander is 140–180 mm, and the maximum length is recorded at 255 mm. Slender in size, with a small head and a long tail. The body is dark blackish brown with yellow ring spots.

Geographical distribution

It is found in Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois and eastern Oklahoma in the United States. It is mainly concentrated on the Osak Plateau and the Vohito Mountains.

Growth and reproduction

The ring-striped salamander reproduces once a year, and the breeding season is from September to November, the female lays an average of 150 eggs, and the larvae are metamorphosed. Sexual maturity 2-3 years. Adults inhabit moist environments and return to streams to lay their eggs only during the breeding season.

The scientific name of the ring-striped blunt-mouthed salamander: Ambystoma annulatum, named in 1866 by the American paleontologist, reptologist and ichthyologist Edward Drinker Cope.
