AviLoeb, a theoretical physicist from Harvard University, wants you to seriously consider the possibility that [it's] the product of an alien civilization that traveled through the solar system in 2017. The object, which Earth astronomers call "Oumuamua" or "Messenger," was once traveling at a speed that hinted at extrasolar origins. But we have never been able to get close enough to it to peek into its true form. Over the past few years, Loeb has argued that Oumuamua is an alien product. In a clip from the University of Chicago Brain podcast, Loeb talks about the controversy and explains why he thinks we need to invest more in developing cosmic archaeology to explore extraterrestrial life.

Oumuamua is flying so fast (196,000 mph, or 54 mph or 87.3 km/s) that it can't have originated in our solar system. Avi Loeb's ideas on the subject caused a stir in the scientific community. He said:

People tend to have preconceived notions, which I think is dangerous because we just don't know who our neighbors are or what purpose they have.

The artist's concept of "Oumuamua", whose actual appearance is unknown. This figure is based on limited observations. What is 'Oumuamua?' We know it entered our solar system — sweeping around the sun on Sept. 9, 2017 — and then back into interstellar space. Astronomers are still trying to piece together its story. Image via ESO/M. Extraterrestrial life is a hypothetical form of life that does not originate from the Earth and arises outside the Earth. This type of life, which ranges from simple prokaryotes (or similar life forms) to intelligent life and even Homo sapiens, has the potential to develop far more civilization than humans. The Drake formula speculates on the possibility of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. The science of studying the various forms of extraterrestrial life we call astrophysiology.

Since the mid-20th century, ongoing research to find signs of extraterrestrial life has been active. This includes two types of research: one that studies exoterminal life that currently or once existed, and one that involves a narrower scope of extraterrestrial intelligent life. Depending on the type of study, research methods also range from analyzing telescope and sample data to detecting and emitting communication signals using radio waves.

Extraterrestrial life, especially extraterrestrial intelligent life, has had a cultural impact on us in science fiction works. Over the years, science fiction has conveyed many scientific ideas, imagined a wide variety of possibilities, and influenced public interest and perception of extraterrestrial life. One of the famous debates is whether it is wise to actively try to connect with extraterrestrial intelligent beings. Some support active attempts to connect with extraterrestrial intelligent life. Others argue that actively attracting attention to the Earth is an unusually dangerous act by citing examples of technologically advanced civilizations that always enslave or erase backward technological civilizations.

Oumuamua was the first known interstellar object to be detected passing through the solar system. It was discovered by Robert Weryk on October 19, 2017, 40 days after it passed its perihelion on September 9, using the Helekara Observatory's Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System Telescope on September 9, and was officially designated 1I/2017 U1. When it was first observed, it was about 33 million kilometers (21 million miles; 0.22 AU; about 85 times the distance between Earth and Moon) and had begun to fly away from the Sun.

In July 2019, astronomers concluded that "Oumuamua is most likely a natural object". A handful of astronomers have suggested that "Oumuamua may be the product of extraterrestrial technology, but there is insufficient evidence to support this hypothesis." In March 2021, scientists unveiled a theory based on nitrogen ice: "Oumuamua may be a piece of an exoplanet similar to Pluto, coming from outside our solar system." ”
