Yuan Xiu, 510–535, courtesy name Xiaoze, was a native of Luoyang, Henan, of the Xianbei ethnic group. The last emperor of northern Wei, the grandson of Emperor Xiaowen Yuanhong, the third son of Yuanhuai the Prince of Wumu of Guangping, his mother was Li Shi. Temple Number Sutra, reigned from 532 to 534. In the second year of Zhongxing (532), with the support of the general Gao Huan, he ascended the throne as emperor with the era name taichang. In the third year of Yongxi (534), dissatisfied with Gao Huan's dictatorship, he moved the capital to Chang'an and defected to Yuwen Tai, the great governor of Guanzhong. In December (February 535), he was killed by Yuwen Tai, the minister, at the age of twenty-six, and was buried in Yunling.

The Fate of the Northern Wei Dynasty was ill-fated, and it ushered in its own doom under the toss of military groups such as Empress Hu and Erzhu. The Erzhu and Gaohuan factions fought a large-scale decisive battle in the area of Hanling Mountain (present-day northeast of Anyang, Henan) for control of the imperial government. In February of the first year of Putai (531), the Erzhu clan changed Yuan Gong to emperor and changed yuan to Putai. In June, The Jin dynasty assassin Shi Gaohuan raised an army against the Erzhu clan at Xindu (present-day Jizhou). He was counterattacked by Erzhu's henchmen. In March of the second year of Putai, the Generals of the Erzhu clan attacked Gao Huan in separate ways, erzhu Tianguang from Chang'an (northwest of present-day Xi'an), Erzhu Zhao from Jinyang, Erzhu Dulu from Luoyang (northeast of present-day Luoyang, Henan), erzhu Zhongyuan from Dong Commandery (present-day Hua County), and other places, and met in Southern Yinan, with 200,000 troops, and deployed on both sides of the Huanshui River (present-day Anyang River). When Gao Huan's cavalry was less than 2,000 and his infantry was less than 30,000, he knew that it was difficult to defeat the enemy, so he laid a circular array on Hanling Mountain on the 28th, and connected cattle and donkeys to block the way back, making the people determined to fight to the death. Gao Huan led the central army by himself, led the right army from his father and brother Gao Yue, and Gao Ao Cao led the left army, and fought fiercely with Erzhu Zhaojun. At the beginning, the Chinese army was unfavorable, and Erzhu Zhao and others took the opportunity to attack quickly. Gao Yue led 500 horses to rush in front of him, and the general Huo Ludun scattered behind him, and Gao Ao Cao attacked with a thousand horses, attacking Erzhu's army back and forth, and was greatly defeated. Erzhu Zhao, the commander of the Erzhu clan, fled back to Jinyang (present-day southwest taiyuan) with his men and horses, and soon Jinyang fell and committed suicide. At this point, the Erzhu clan forces withdrew from the stage of history. In April, Gao Huan entered Luoyang and seized real power in Northern Wei. The kings of the Northern Wei dynasty saw the political turmoil and fled. Yuan Xiu fled to the people and became a rural farmer in a field house. In order for Gao Huan to justifiably grasp the imperial power, he must find a puppet emperor, and Yuan Xiu is the best candidate. Hu Sichun found Yuan Xiu from Yuan Xiu's confidant Wang Sizheng, and Gao Huan personally came to Chen Cheng and wept. Yuan Xiu believed that there was no danger before entering Beijing. On June 13, 532 (April 25), Yuan Xiu was located outside Dongguo in Luoyang, and the ceremony adopted the Xianbei ancient system (the old system of Daidu), with Gao Huan and seven other people covered in black felt, and Yuan Xiu worshiped the sky in the west on the felt, and then entered the city. After Yuan Xiu ascended the throne, Gao Huan forced Yuan Xiu to marry his eldest daughter, and there was no affection between the husband and wife. Yuan Xiu lived with three cousins and made them all princesses. Among them, he liked Princess Yuan Mingyue the most.

After Emperor Xiaowu Ascended the throne, in order to get rid of the powerful minister Gao Huan and monopolize the control of the imperial court, he plotted to collude with The Great Line of Taihe Bayue in Guannei to contain Gao Huan. In the second year of Yongxi (533), Emperor Xiaowu appointed He Bayue as the governor of the twenty military and metropolitan governors of Kansai, and secretly ordered He Bayue to get rid of Gao Huan. In the third year of Yongxi (534), he broke with Gao Huan, and Gao Huan led more than 200,000 troops from Jinyang to luoyang, and Emperor Xiaowu led the Jingshi sect to Move to Chang'an. After Emperor Xiaowu moved west to Guanzhong, he not only failed to achieve the goal of pro-government affairs, but was instead controlled by Yuwen Tai's Guanlong clique. On the 15th day of the 15th leap month (February 535) of the third year of Yongxi (534), Yuwen Tai killed Yuan Mingyue and Yuan Xiu on the grounds that Yuan Xiu was adulterous and injured his sister, and established Yuan Baoju as emperor. The Northern Wei Dynasty split into the Eastern and Western Wei Dynasties.
