One day, Yan Yuan accompanied Lu Dinggong, the ruler of the State of Lu, to sit by the side of the square and chat. There was a master driver named Higashino Bi, driving a horse-drawn carriage through the square. Lu Ding saw this and exclaimed, "How clever is Dongye Bi's technique in driving the carriage!" Yan Yuan did not give Lu Dinggong a stand, but said: "Dongye Bi does have some skills in driving the carriage, but he is not the most skilled, and his horse will soon fall shortly." ”
Lu Dinggong felt that Yan Yuan's words were very disappointing, so he said to the people around him: "I have heard that people with virtue and cultivation will not say bad things about others behind their backs. Yan Yuan listened, was very unhappy in his heart, and got up and left the square.
Not long after, someone came to report to Lu Dinggong that the horse driven by Higashino Bi had lost its foot and the car had overturned. Lu Dinggong did not expect to respond to Yan Yuan's prophecy, saying that he would immediately send someone to get Yan Yuan back.
When Yan Yuan returned, Lu Dinggong asked him, "Just now I praised Dongye Bi for his skill in driving the carriage, but you said that he was not the most intelligent, and predicted that his horse would fall, how did you know so accurately?"
Yan Yuan replied, "I inferred from the experience of the ancients. In ancient times, Yu Shun was good at governing the people, and the father-maker was good at driving a carriage. When Yu Shun ruled over the people, he never made the people poor to the point of being in a state of embarrassment; the Father-Maker never let the horses run and work to the extreme. Therefore, when Yu Shun reigned, the common people never fled or rebelled, and the Father-Maker never lost his hooves and overturned the carriage. Although Higashinobi was now very skilled in driving the carriage, after the review, he did not let the horses rest, but still drove them across the obstacles and ran into the distance to show his skill. The horse was exhausted, and he kept swinging his whip, so I was sure his horse was going to stumble. ”
Lu Dinggong listened and said, "It's too good to talk about, can you still explain these truths more thoroughly?"
Yan Yuan saw that Lu Dinggong was more sincere, so he continued: "When the beast is forced to be anxious, it will fight with people. Even birds peck when they are forced to be anxious. And when man is forced to the end of the road, he will rebel. Therefore, it has never been and cannot be done to leave ordinary people in a difficult situation without chaos and instability. ”
Lu Dinggong said, "I have not realized these truths you have spoken before, and these are indeed wise words. ”
