Hong Kong, 5 Sep (Xinhua) -- On 5 September, Carrie Lam, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, congratulated Hong Kong athletes Zhu Wenjia and Chen Haoyuan on winning a silver and a bronze medal for Hong Kong at the Tokyo Paralympic Games.

Carrie Lam said that Hong Kong athletes won two silver, three bronze medals and five medals at the Tokyo Paralympic Games with their excellent performance and strong fighting spirit, which was commendable. This is the result of years of hard work by athletes, whose achievements are inspiring and full of positive energy for other people with disabilities in Hong Kong.

Chen Zhisi, convener of the Executive Council's non-official lawmakers, said the two athletes persevered, broke through obstacles, and played their own piece of the sky on the badminton court. Their spirit of not giving up lightly and having the courage to pursue their dreams is worth learning.

In the Tokyo Paralympic Badminton tournament that day, Zhu Wenjia won the silver medal in the men's SH6 singles final, and Chen Haoyuan won the bronze medal in the men's WH2 singles competition.

Carrie Lam said that the SAR government has been fully supporting Hong Kong's disabled athletes, and as early as 2001, it established the Hong Kong Elite Athletes Fund. In 2017, the Elite Funding Pilot Program for Disability Sports projects was launched, and in 2019, the program was normalized, giving athletes with disabilities full-time training opportunities and direct financial support.

According to reports, the Hong Kong SAR Government's resources on the development of sports for people with disabilities have increased significantly in recent years, with the budget expenditure from 2021 to 2022 being HK$100 million, more than double that of 2017-2018.
