Polish national treasure director Andrei Vajda died in hospital on the evening of October 9 at the age of 90. His colleague film director Jack Bromsky revealed the unfortunate news to The Associated Press.

Polish national treasure director Vajda has passed away and won the Palme d'Or and the Oscar for Lifetime Achievement

As the founder of the "Polish School", Andrei Vajda's famous "war trilogy" - "Generation", "Sewers", "Ashes and Diamonds" is familiar to audiences, and he has also directed "Marble Man" and "Iron Man", the latter of which won the Cannes Palme d'Or. In addition, in his later years, he directed the highest-grossing film in Polish history, The Katyn Massacre. In 2000, Andrey Vajda received the 72nd Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

His film and television works mostly present the "poetry of ruin" after the war

Andrey Vajda graduated from Poland's most prestigious film school, the Lodz Film School. In the history of Polish cinema, his position is almost unparalleled, as a leading figure in the "Polish School". His first feature-length film, A Generation (1955), is said to have fired the first shot in Polish cinema.

As a teenager, Vajda witnessed the Nazi attack on Poland, an experience that was crucial to the filmmaking of his early films, leading to a tragic, poetic Baroque style that, although he always rode the world in a romantic manner, presented a kind of "European ruin" overall.

The "War Trilogy", consisting of three films, "A Generation", "Sewers", and "Ashes and Diamonds", is Wajda's most prestigious work.

Set during World War II, Sewerage depicts a series of revolts carried out by underground organizations during the German Nazi invasion of Poland during World War II. Faced with the German motorized forces, the partisans had no chance of winning, and they had to fight in the sewers of Poland. These guerrillas were like ants, gray-headed, without any heroic image to speak of, and a large number of members had mental problems, and they all died in despair. "There is no victory in the sewers, only embarrassment and defeat."

Vaida entered the audience's vision with a realistic and poetic portrayal of the war, and at that time, his realistic work could be described as a huge risk, because the government authorities would never allow him to portray the hero of the war so badly. However, these roles have gained worldwide recognition. Vaida uses a large number of complex long shots to gradually present the humility and plight of human beings in war in the world of nightmares.

Created in 1958, Ashes and Diamonds portrays a "wrong" murder in the form of a "robber film." Wearing sunglasses and a tight jacket, Machik became the icon of anti-heroism at the time, and the shape was easily reminiscent of James Dean. He saw the conflict between personal consciousness and national consciousness, and more than once doubted the meaning of his actions.

In fact, with the exception of the "War Trilogy", most of Wyda's works highlight the conflict between the individual and the collective, including the later Marble Man and Iron Man. He also often portrayed national heroes in a pessimistic manner and expressed his own skepticism about the existing traditional Polish ideology. So some people describe his film style as "gray poetry", whether it is "Sewers" or "Ashes and Diamonds" (1958), Vaida portrays an existential hero.

"The sword is not old" once insisted on filming at the age of 81

As a living fossil of the Polish film industry, Wäjda witnessed the ups and downs of the development of Polish cinema, and at the age of 81, Wäjda was still "not old", filming the box office miracle in Polish history at that time, "Katyn Massacre".

The famous film critic Europa once commented on the film on Douban: "The Katyn Massacre" is not skillful, but an 82-year-old man left the angry tragedy to Poland and even the world, did not incite national emotions, and did not have the anger to corrupt the historical preaching. There is a scene in the film where the red and white flag of Poland is torn in half, half becoming a conspicuous red flag and half becoming a white cloth for the Soviet army to shine shoes. The tragedy of the mass grave is actually the fate of the Polish nation.

Earlier, Vajda was also forced by the Polish authorities to make films in Western Europe for "Iron Man", and did not return to China until 1989, and then was knighted as a "guest of honor" and reformed the Polish film industry. Although most of his works are well-known abroad, he is a well-deserved witness to Polish cinema. And "The Katyn Massacre" is a gesture of his overtures to large-cost production.

Russia has made full disclosure of the secret information of the Katyn massacre, and in the face of such a detailed written account, why should such a film be made? The 81-year-old replied, "It is necessary for young people to know this history, this is not an accidental group, this is a whole society, about each and every one of us." ”
