Round-tailed fighting fish caught by Mr. Zhao

Recently, Mr. Zhao, a citizen, caught a small fish while fishing in the Yi River, and he found that this small fish was very special, with a blue spot behind his eyes, which looked very beautiful, so he took it home and called the luoyang evening news reporter.

After receiving the call, the reporter saw the small fish at Mr. Zhao's house. Subsequently, the reporter sent the photo of the small fish to Wang Wenbo, an expert at the Protected Area Management Department of the Municipal Forestry Bureau. After Wang Wenbo saw it, he said that the scientific name of this fish is round-tailed bucket fish, which is also known as "fire-fired fish (pánɡpí)" and "cloth fish". Adult round-tailed fighting fish are 5 cm to 8 cm long, dark brown or dark gray on the side of the body, with inconspicuous "tiger stripes", blue eye-like patches on the posterior margin of the gill cap, and the first fin on the outside of the ventral fin is elongated and filamentous, and the caudal fin is rounded. Male round-tailed bucket fish are often brightly colored than female round-tailed bucket fish, with longer fins on the dorsal and fins. Round-tailed bucket fish have a wide range of distribution, from the Pearl River to the Heilongjiang River, and they prefer excellent environment rivers, small ponds, and rice fields. It is worth noting that this is the first time that the round-tailed fighting fish has been recorded in our city.

Unlike other fish, round-tailed fighting fish belong to the order Perciformes. A characteristic of the silk-footed perch is that their supramarine cavity is wide, containing a labyrinthine supragill organ, which can surface in hypoxic water to draw oxygen from the air. "With this feature, round-tailed bucket fish are more adaptable to low-oxygen environments than ordinary fish." Wang Wenbo said that round-tailed fighting fish prefer to prey on jiéjué (mosquito larvae). Although ordinary fish are difficult to survive in, round-tailed fighting fish can, and can prey on more than 20 widows a day, which can be said to be "mosquito control experts".

Round-tailed bucket fish breed differently from other fish, and during the breeding season, the male round-tailed bucket fish swaying like an astrolabe fish tail attracts females. When mating with females in dense aquatic areas, the males spit out sticky bubbles with their mouths to build spawning "bubble nests" for the females.

Wang Wenbo said that the round-tailed bucket fish is distributed in many places in our province, and the round-tailed bucket fish found by Mr. Zhao is a juvenile small fish, which is likely to enter the Yi River along other rivers. (Luoyang Evening News reporter Du Qing text/photo)
