Yang Zaibao began working as an actor in the Shanghai Film Studio in 1965, and in the film "From Slave to General" in 1979, he played the image of General Luo Xiao, who always pursued the truth and did not succumb to the evil forces. With his deep, rough and delicate acting skills, he vividly portrayed Luo Xiao's character growth process from a small slave, a soldier of the National Guard Army, a leader of the Kuomintang regiment to a general of the Red Army.

In 1983, Yang Zaibao won the Best Actor Award at the 4th Golden Rooster Awards and the Best Actor Award at the 7th Hundred Flowers Awards for his starring drama film "Blood, Always Hot". In the late 1980s, just as Yang Zaibao was devoting himself to the creation of realistic themes, Chinese films faced the impact of commercialization and the pain of artistic creation. From the age of 50 to 70, a full 20 years, Yang Zaibao has not acted in another movie. Until recent years, Yang Zaibao, as always, refused roles that he believed lacked a basis in life.

Literary and artistic works should carry forward the spirit of national excellence, rather than blindly pursuing money. In the face of the market tide, I have no way, but I am not in the same stream. ”

Without acting, Yang Zaibao became a director and continued to express his heart on the screen. When the commercial blockbusters were flying in the sky, he chose to shoot the movie "Party Group Leader", and specially made a big close-up of the party constitution; in "Yesterday's Promise", he simply named the male protagonist "Zhao Hanqing", expressing the indifference and stoicism of "who has not died since ancient times". He said: "Maybe I am a loser in the film market, but I am by no means a downgrade. ”

Despite his advanced age, Yang Zaibao still cares about the work of the Shanghai Film Actors Troupe.
