After retiring from leeds midfield due to injury, James Ward-Prous replaced England's Calvin Phillips in this month's World Cup qualifiers.

Phillips was assessed by medical staff after Leeds United's win over Watford at the weekend and was deemed unfit.

Ward Prouss — who scored and was sent off for a red card in Southampton's 3-1 loss to Chelsea on Saturday — has been with his England team-mate at St George's Park.

Gareth Southgate's side played away to Andorra on Saturday before taking on Hungary at home at Wembley on Tuesday 12 October.

Phillips, England's key player in the Euro 2020 final this summer, has played in all seven games and forged a solid partnership with De Klan Rice in midfield.

Ward-Prouss was part of England's provisional squad ahead of Euro 2020 – and played in warm-up friendly matches against Austria and Romania – but was removed from the squad before the match.

He joined England with Tammy Abraham and Ben Chilwell.

Abraham and Chilwell were called up on Monday after Reece James retired with an ankle injury, four days after Southgate named his original team.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tutchell described James' callout as a "misunderstanding" and joked that he thought the defender was included in the England water polo team as he was training in the pool during his recovery from injury.

England are four points ahead of second-place Albania in the first group of the World Cup qualifiers, with four games to play.

They ended their qualifying match next month in a home game against Albania and away to San Marino.

"In Tammy Abraham's 2-0 win over Empoli on Sunday, Italy said 'the Englishman's stats are outstanding', ultimately upsetting the balance in favor of Southgate in his recall to England.

The former Chelsea player didn't score in that game, but he did provide an assist when his efforts bounced back from the woodwork to get Henrik Mkhitaryan home. It was the sixth time tamalm had been blocked by a goal in the summer by Tammy Tammy Abraham in the summer, and he had contributed all but four goals.

"Southgate will be happy with his goals – and near-misses – and his contribution on the pitch. In addition to his finishing, Tammy Abraham has created more opportunities for others than his two full seasons at Chelsea and, as his heat map shows, is more involved outside the box.

"There is even evidence that Mourinho is very happy with his new arrival, which strengthens Mourinho's confidence. There are strikers who can be the best players on the pitch even if they don't score, and that's exactly how Tammy played empoli," he said before the 24-year-old England recalled.

"Replacing Harry Kane on the international stage will be a clear struggle for Abraham in the long run. At least for now, his job in Italy is paying dividends. ”
