Speaking of Brian Donnelly, perhaps few people know. But when it comes to Kaws, everyone knows today's young friends.
PreviousThe art house of Maezawa Yusaku, a friend left a message to let Xiao T tidy up the Kaws house. Okay, then the whole one. Brian Donnelly is the original name of street graffiti artist Kaws, who has been overheated over the years.
Born in 1974 in New Jersey, Brian's early work was mainly graffiti on advertising paintings or posters, and in 2006, he co-founded OriginalFake with Masatoshi Katayama, Medicom Toy and NEXUS7's Tomohiro Imano, which opened up the possibility of art and street fashion collaboration. Then, using the unique Kaws-style representative element "X X", we entered the trend art market.
Then, he began an 11-year partnership with Galerie Perrotin, making Kaws popular all over the world through various exhibitions and co-promotions. But since 2019, Kaws has changed owners, signed to Skarstedt Gallery in New York, and even entered a new AR field.
Interestingly, after changing galleries, the first exhibition at Skarstedt Gallery was called GONE, which means to say goodbye to the past and embrace the future.
And this article we have
Don't look at his work
Don't look at his exhibition
Don't look at his co-brand
Just look at his home
What a treasure to hide
Today, little T wants to share with you the home of Brian and his wife Julia Chiang in Brooklyn, New York. Come, let's take a look at what art he has collected in this artistic home.
The interior design was created by Masamichi Katayama
This residence in Brooklyn consists of two bedrooms, two living rooms and a sun room with a super high roof. Throughout the different spaces and walls of the house, countless contemporary art works are distributed on display. Today, Xiao T will pick 10 of these artists and briefly introduce them.
Living room
1. Tomoo Gokita
Contemporary Japanese Artist (1969-)
Enter the hall and sign two large paintings. The oversized black-and-white painting on the left is Japanese
Works by contemporary artist Tomoo Gokita. Born in 1969 in Tokyo, Japan, he was a former designer who specialized in charcoal drawing. Designers who don't want to be artists are not people with lofty ideals. After that, he insisted on replacing the faces and other body parts of the characters in the painting with surreal organisms, and in the composition, he used a large number of thick lines and various shapes of color blocks to give the work a surreal quality.
These forms of art, full of experimentation and innovation, made him the most promising artist in contemporary Japan. In 2016, Stussy also recruited Tomoyo Gogita to collaborate on a series of costumes.
This piece from Brain's collection is Slash and Thrust by Tomoyoshi Gogita in 2008.
2. Campana Brothers
Brazilian Designer (1953/1964-)
The work of George Condo is preceded by the KAWS BFF plush chair designed by the brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana.
Campana Brothers × KAWS BFF Plush Chair
The Campana Brothers are a hot duo in the design world in recent years, with the older brother a lawyer and the younger brother an architect. Now they base themselves in Sao Paolo, Brazil.
The survival wisdom of the slum of St. Paul gave the brothers a great inspiration in their creations. The "Favela" chair is their masterpiece, made of pieces of broken wood spliced together and glued, the pale material emits the fragrance of wood, and the chaotic arrangement releases a strong smell of survival. In 2003, the Favila chair shocked the Milan Furniture Fair that year.
The homeworks they designed are exhibited in many museums in Europe. Among them, in 1998, they designed the Vermelha rope armchair ( ) to make them famous, and now it is a permanent collection of the MOMA Museum in the United States.
After becoming famous, they have carried out several important collaborations with a number of well-known brands such as edra, alessi and Louis Vuitton. The most amazing of Louis Vuitton's Objets Nomades series is this 500,000-dollar Bomboca sofa. About Objets Nomades, you can see the article of Xiao T's previous visit to the Hong Kong Special Exhibition If you have bought enough LV bags, it is time to pick up its home furnishing boutiques.
In fact, about Campana Brothers, you can actually write a separate article and wait until Little T has time.
Look, Brain baby, how much fun you have.
3. George Condo
Contemporary American Visual Artist (1957-)
To the right of Tomoyoshi Gogita is the work of George Condo, which everyone is already familiar with. In the article that Xiao T wrote before Maezawa Yusaku's House, he has appeared, and it seems that it is a masterpiece that famous artists must receive.
Introduced before, I will not repeat it here.
4. Crash
American Graffiti Artist (1961-)
On the other side of the living room, there is another full-leather doll seat that Campana Brothers custom-made for Brain. The seats are flanked by Dutch 3D artist Joris Laarman (left) and Italian industrial design leader Gaetano Pesce (right). As the backdrop for the three chairs is a painting by Graffiti artist Crash from New York.
Crash, real name John Matos, known as John "Crash" Matos. Born on October 11, 1961, he has been graffiti on the new York City subway since the 1970s and is considered a pioneer in graffiti art.

Crash also scribbled five guitars for guitar maestro Eric Clapton, one of which was auctioned off for $321,000 in 2004.
He is good at depicting various eyes in the form of graffiti.
Crash's work is in permanent collections at institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In recent years, it has also cooperated with Ferrari and TUMI.
5. Barry McGee
American Graffiti Artist (1966-)
Speaking of graffiti artists, there is one person whose name cannot be left untouched: Barry McGee. He can be said to be the OG of the art world above the kaws, and he was introduced in the famous art documentary "Beautiful Loser". Brain and Barry McGee met on the graffiti streets. Everyone knows that when Kaws was working on the streets of New York, he took out the advertising posters of Brands such as Calvin Klein, DKNY, Diesel, etc., took them home to create, and put them back in place. And the OG who taught him how to open the bus stop billboard window was Barry McGee. Isn't that kind of interesting.
Far from it, back to the point.
Above the shoe-changing chair (by Bruno Mathsson) on the other side of the living room hangs a work by Barry McGee.
The Meso-American Barry McGee has been living in San Francisco, USA, and his paintings draw on the influences of the avant-garde and pop art of the 60s, often experimenting with graphics that combine traditional styles with new elements, from comics to folk art to signage systems and street graffiti.
McGee's paintings are very representative: in the background of the areas of water droplets, patterns and colors, the figure in the middle of the picture controls the entire abstract picture.
He also painted human figures on abandoned wagons at the train station, on discarded vehicles, and on empty wine bottles.
According to the market, the price of a hand-painted bottle is now 4w knives, so much so that many of his early works on the streets of San Francisco have been stolen.
6. Alex Katz
American Contemporary Artist (1927-)
After walking through the living room and past McGee's work, we arrived at the dining room with a few clean windows.
restaurant
In addition to some homemade dolls and white sculptures by his wife Julia Chiang, there is a huge painting in the restaurant. This is the work of Alex Katz by Alex Katz: Yellow Tulips, 2014
Alex Katz, 93, is one of the most dazzling pop artists of the era. The Japanese ukiyo-e painter Kaoru Kitagawa was an important source of inspiration for him, and his unique techniques of portraiture and landscape painting have made his work a favorite of art collectors.
He has just been to Shanghai, and his biggest solo exhibition so far just ended last month at the Fosun Art Center in Shanghai, where many friends have eaten Katz's dog food.
Because as an artist, Katz spent a lot of time and energy painting his wife, painting more than 250 portraits of his wife in his 60 years of marriage, almost every quarter... Presenting the beauty of a wife from hundreds of different perspectives is definitely true love.
7. Keith Haring
American Pop Artist (1958-1990)
Another living room is a play area for children. The number of artworks in this area is also quite large, xiao T picked the emphasis.
In the distance is the 1983 dark continent of Kings by American graffiti artist Dondi (1961-1998). The smallest on the far left is a painting by American contemporary artist Mike Kelley (1954-2012). The chair below is from Gaetano Pesce (left) and the cabinet on the right is from Gaetano Pesce.
Located in photo C is the American pop artist Keith Haring, who has been active in Chinese crossover goods in recent years.
The paintings in KAWS's collection were created in 1983.
Keith Haring (1958–1990) was an American pop artist and social activist who had a deep impact on the world. In 1978, he began to graffiti on the streets and subway stations. In 1983, after being chased by police on the subway graffiti, he made a name for himself. He later entered the museum as a graffiti artist, and in 1984 Keith Haring's painting "Dog in a Crocodile Mask" cost $20,000.
Keith Haring Battlefield conveys the spiritual world with simple but powerful pictorial elements such as barking dogs, kneeling little people, etc., presenting life, death, sex and war. His work has also become part of popular culture, with Coach, Herschel Supply, UNIQLO, Nestlé all competing for names, and even Kwon Ji-yong tattooing his symbols.
Unfortunately, he died young, and the essence of the 31-year-old remained in the human world.
On the other side of the play area are American artist Carroll Dunham's 1991 mound A, sculpture artist H. A. Thompson. Female-Figure by C. Westermann (1922-1981) and 2004 by American painter Dana Schutz (1976-).
8. Martin Wong
American Contemporary Artist (1946-1999)
Coming to the bedroom, very simple. In order to ensure a good night's sleep, there is not even an outlet at the head of the bed, and it seems that Brain does not brush the mobile phone before going to bed.
The three paintings hanging at the head of the bed are paintings by Chinese-American artist Huang Mading.
His work has been described as social realism and the artistic style of visionaries. Huang's paintings are more about exploring ethnicity and identity, showing cross-cultural elements, showing a variety of painting language styles, and grotesque depictions.
Whether it is the dice or the No. 8 ball, it has a certain Chinese color.
American Sign Language was the focus of a series of works by Huang in the early 1980s. He appropriately called them "hearing-impaired paintings." This work from Brain's collection is also the one that appears in Huang's photograph above.
His works are also collected by museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
In the bedroom, even the bedding is dyed with art, and it is a sheet printed with works by American artist Chris Johanson.
The left side of the bedside is a chair designed by American designer couple Charles & Ray Eames.
9. Haroshi
Japanese Sculpture Artist (1978-)
On the other side of the bedside of the bedroom, there is a group of works by Japanese sculptor Haroshi.
Born in 1978, Haroshi is a skateboard enthusiast who feels sorry for breaking the board every time, and then teaches himself to make a different color, dye the old skateboard with different colors, and then glue the skateboard into a whole piece of wood, and then use the traditional Japanese woodworking process to cut, carve, assemble, polish and a series of complex procedures to produce sculptures of different shapes and forms.
His works range from human parts such as hands and feet, skulls, cartoon characters, animal heads, and various forms.
Haroshi's wood carvings are mostly in a strong trend, street, cartoon style, which stems from his love of street culture, with a wide range of materials, no constraints, and each new solo exhibition can surprise fans.
10. Takashi Murakami
Contemporary Japanese Artist (1963-)
When you go to the children's bedroom, you will find that the collection of artworks is much more colorful. Japanese artist Takashi Murakami's 3D sunflowers are unforgettable. Takashi Murakami was one of Japan's most influential artists after World War II, and his artistic path was similar to that of Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and Jeff Koons, all of whom were known for their own visual symbols.
Flower Ball 3DPapyrus ("Paint it Red" project),2013
On the children's bed, there is also a 60cm version of Murakami Takashi's plush pillow. This is perhaps the most valuable art derivative piece that lights up the color of the home, and more than one thousand pieces, Bei Haodeng and Hao Art Museum are in stock.
Takashi Murakami's colorful works enliven Sonny's bedroom, and children can also be proud of their rooms and art.
In addition to the artwork, the choice of furniture, Brain also has its own taste.
Ettore Sottsass
Famous Italian designer (1917-2007)
Italian designer Ettore Sottsass is the creator of Memphis' modern design style. Brain's home houses two large storage cabinets of his design.
Even today, Sottsass' designs still appear exaggerated and avant-garde.
This bookshelf designed by Sottsass must collect one in your lifetime.
Carlton Bookcase,1981
Memphis's design has always been flaunting, colorful, vulgar, fresh, the shape is strange and funny, naïve and funny, the pattern is popular and spoofy, grotesque and bizarre, pop art, oriental art, African Latin American elements are not taboo.
The following is currently a replica of many influencer shops, this is the Ettore Sottsass design of the piece - Ultrafragola mirror.
"Design is for me a way of talking about life, about society, politics, love, food, and even design itself. Ultimately, it is a utopian way of symbolizing social perfection. —Ettore Sottsass
Brain is also a fan of another Italian designer, with a total collection of five of his homeworks. He's Gaetano Pesce.
Gaetano Pesce
Famous Italian designer (1939-)
When you see weird furniture in Brain's house, yes, it was designed by Gaetano Pesce. Born in 1939 in La Spezia, Italy, he studied in Venice and made outstanding achievements in architecture, interior design, graphic design, and film. In the home design, the most famous is actually the "UP5 sofa" he designed in 1969.
Brain's home collection is the Massada floor lamp he designed in 1991.
The "Do You Still LoveMe" locker, designed in 2007.
Crosby children's chair
「New York 1984」Pratt chair。
More than a meter long Xie Bigfoot is also his 1970 work up7, Small T's local tycoon friend Boss Wang has a collection of one.
http://www.artnet.com/artists/gaetano-pesce/
Gaetano Pesce as a cross-border design fanatic, he broke the boundary between design and art, he made furniture like sculpture, and used pure artistic creation techniques and artistic conception to carry out the creativity of design art.
"Design is not my everything. I'm always interesting about all sorts of things. Sometimes when someone asks me to create a piece, I use the architectural method because I think it might be very interesting to do so... Sometimes I also use painting, sculpture or other means. It depends on the specific idea. I call this approach "multidisciplinary attitude." ”——Gaetano Pesce
Combing through most of brain's artworks, you'll find that he's covered art from the 1950s to contemporary times. This means that he is not shallow in his exploration and is interested in many artists of different countries and styles. The works of art stars like Raymond Pettibon (next little T alone), George Condo, Mike Kelley, Alex Katz and others are constantly rotating.
He is said to have also had a secret warehouse with more works of art, and from time to time he could rotate the works on the wall in the guest room.
After seeing Kaws' home, Little T deeply realized:
the art of living,
It's living artistically.
Pay your respects to the House of The Arts
