In June 1942, the German Fascist SS besieged the village of Lidice, near the present-day capital of the Czech Republic, Prague, and shot and killed more than 140 male citizens over the age of 16, all infants and women in concentration camps, and 90 children in a concentration camp in Poland (only 17 of whom survived until the end of the war). All the houses and buildings in the village were burned down or razed to the ground by bulldozers. In this way, a good village was destroyed by the Fascist SS.
In order to mourn the death of all children killed in the war in the village of Lidice and throughout the world, to oppose the abuse and poisoning of children by imperialist war traffickers and to protect the rights of children, the Council of the International Federation of Democratic Women, held in Moscow, the capital of the Soviet Union, in November 1949, adopted a resolution formally deciding that June 1 of each year should be the day of children all over the world, the International Children's Day.
