Since it is so dangerous,
Why design this little hole?
In fact, this small hole at the bottom of the porthole is called a "breather hole" and plays a key role in protecting the safety of passengers.
In order to make the aircraft windows strong and compressive, the portholes of civil airliners are composed of three layers of windows + ventilation holes:
The outer and middle layers are tightly sealed "structural windows" that are very strong and used to resist the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the cabin. The vents are designed at the bottom of the middle layer (as shown in the figure below).
When the pressure in the cabin is too high, the internal air pressure acts on the windows, which may cause them to burst. However, the ventilation hole allows part of the airflow through the middle window and the outer window, reducing the pressure on the middle window.
With the ventilation hole, only the outer window is blasted, and the middle window can be retained, which can still play a certain role in resisting the internal and external pressure difference, and at the same time avoid passengers being "sucked" out of the window and accidents.
The inner floor is a "non-essential" window on the passenger side. It is mainly used to prevent passengers from hitting the middle glass.
The inner layer is not tightly sealed, the air can flow, and there is no strong air pressure difference between the two sides. Therefore, the inner layer needs to withstand less pressure and the material is relatively "fragile".
Xiao Heng recalled the recent incident of drunken women smashing the inner window on the flight from Xining to Hangzhou (left in the picture below), and the crew urgently diverted to Zhengzhou.

Last year, there was a "rupture" incident in the inner window of the aircraft cabin in India, and the "big-hearted crew" just used tape to glue the cracked part (above, right)!
Thanks to the design of the three-story windows + the middle ventilation hole of the aircraft, only the inner windows that have no anti-compressive effect are broken, and no serious air disasters are triggered!
In addition, the ventilation hole has another role: to prevent large areas of porthole fogging and icing!

The air between the inner and outer glass flows through the "ventilation holes", which can cause the water vapor in the air to condense near the ventilation holes, without fogging or freezing in other parts of the window, obscuring the window.
